It's shit, stopped being funny 30 years ago, you can't make anything worthwhile with this
>>
>>736482521
Any continuity or callbacks tend to be more on a per-artist or per-writer basis. Like, there's some universal truths, but you can assume everything goes back to status quo after whatever adventure happens. Like Barks' stories were mostly one offs, but Rosa tried to put them into a coherent mold and work off them for his stories. And then in Italy you had different runs of some specific series, such as PK, DoubleDuck, or kind of longer term stories that had weekly or monthly chapters for a while (such as one where Scrooge started a F1 racing team, and Donald was the driver, and so that story spun around them going on a championship tour around the world).
>>
>>736482901
Again, fuck off. It is iconic. Literally one of the core parts of his character at least in the animated cartoons.

Rosa's Donald Duck autism and the overall timeline he built for Scrooge is legitimately a work of art and gigakino.
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck are the best duck comics and arguably one of the best overall comic book stories ever made.
>>
>>736482939
>at least in the animated cartoons.
NTA, but it's kind of funny how if you are like, a donald duck comic reader from Scandinavia, Donald's voice is never really brought up. Like sure, there's the usual one bit or two of bad singing, which is depicted with a messed up speech bubble or whatever, but otherwise Donald speaks coherently and no one comments on his voice being hard to decipher. So this leads to Donald's voice being hard to understand existing only in the cartoons, and cartoons only (and maybe some comics based on ducktales, I haven't checked).
>>
I have Scrooge Mcduck's Life and Times complete hardcover book signed by Don Rosa himself. It's my most valuable treasure in my bookshelf

Sure, I'm a big fan of Rosa, but the point I'm making is that you shouldn't necessarily get too married to what's considered "canon" in the duckverse, besides some absolute basics. Donald's always going to be trying a new job, going on an adventure, or who knows what else, and that's that.

Yeah, he did it fair few times. >>736483448
Based. After the way Disney treated him, it is completely understandable for him to just tell them to fuck off. Those god damn fucks used his name to advertize reprints of the comics he drew without his permission or even providing him any royalties. I know that disney doesn't pay royalties to artists in general but at least with most of them, they don't also promote those reprints with the name of the artist. They basically treated his name as if it was also their property along with the duck comics themselves.

>>
>>736483760
They can get a bad rep because they produce them like on an assembly line. As a result, there's a shit ton of italian comics, some of which are golden, but a lot of it is disposable trash.
Of course, you shouldn't only point at Italy, because other countries do it too. Maybe somewhat of a famous example is Victor José Arriagada Rios, known as Vicar, who drew like +1000 comics. For better or worse, he became the "face" of weekly Donald Duck magazines in places like Finland. Were the stories he drew good? Eh, they were serviceable enough, with maybe some amusing story or two here and there.
Do note, Vicar only penned two stories out of all the comics he drew, as it was always someone else writing for him.

>>736484067
Donald Duck better represents the average, down-on-your-luck man with a bad temper. Mickey in comparison is often depicted as little two-goody-shoesy. There are some good Mickey stories, but I think highs don't ever reach as high as Donald's comics, but the lows are even worse than the worst Donald comics.
>>

There can still occasionally be some good Mickey story, but more often than not it's because it goes against the grain of him being a safer, bland character.

>European publishers started publishing those comics in Europe in various countries
>These become pretty popular all over
>Disney ceased producing comics in the US due to their dwindling comics sales in US
>But the publishers were allowed to contract artists to make stories for them
>This leads to Italy and couple other countries to become Duck comic exporters
And rest is history

There's at least couple or three, I can tell. I know, because I'm one of them.

>>
Are these Donald comics not popular in the US?
I'm from Brazil and they were quite successful for a while here.
>>
>>736486075
To be fair, it's not like those stories are happening concurrently, are part of the same canon, or were even published at the same time. Like, sure, PK stuff has been happening all the time since PK's inception as one-offs, but the PK magazine, the MiB stuff and Double Duck started getting printed in different years.
>>
>>736486075
Self-contained Canon, I don't know if they're of Italian Origin but we had a run of comics where Mickey, Donald and Goofy were all in a fantasy world as wizards or something like that, it's been a long time
>>
>>736486134
AFAIK Disney more or less gave up on their home turf sometime during the silver age of Marvel and DC comics. Stuff like Carl Barks' comics were decently popular among those who read them, but Disney more or less stopped giving a shit about print, and focused more on cartoon side of things. Especially when Ducktales took off.
Don Rosa for example is an American artist, and he did some comics for an American publisher, but it was eventually an European publisher that asked him to make more stuff, leading to Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and so on.
>>
I remember there was this one where Donald moves to another city and becomes a complete winner in all aspects of life but is forced to return because he is essential to make his friends and family feel good because of how much of a loser he was.

In a way it's amusing that Donald Duck himself eventually got a caped superhero alter ego.
Somewhat similarly, some French readers gave Don Rosa flack for making Scrooge incredibly strong in the Life and Times. Particularly that one chapter where he first meets Glomgold, and beats up some local wildlife, some French readers felt Rosa was just doing the typical American thing of turning Scrooge into a superhero.

Donald Duck magazine started appearing regularly in Finland in the early 50s. I guess it just got a strong foothold during the time when people started to have more money for such things and there weren't that many options yet. The kids liked it and it was safe so parents surbscribed to it. There are several stories that Finnish kids learned to read before school thanks to Donald Duck.
>>
>>736487000
What I never really got is why they gave him a full name but not Mickey Mouse, by following the same logic he should've been called something like "Tonino Topolino", I wonder if it's the same everywhere else
>>
>>736483031
I think that has more to do with the medium; Donald speaking coherent words and sentences because the written media can't convey his weird voice as well as the cartoons and animations they're based on is just par for the course and they put more of a focus on his other traits instead.

I think it's easier to piss off Donald, so Bruce might be shit out of luck. Like I remember one of the stories is that some scientists hooked Donald up to a machine that was powered up by rage, and then gave him a kendama-type toy, but it was rigged with magnets so you could never get the ball to land properly. Trying to play with the toy got Donald so mad this infinite energy machine started malfunctioning and looping the energy back to Donald, and he grew up to the size of an apartment building.

You can probably pull off some meta humor with the duck lore, but KH is still on the wackier side.
Like, there's stuff like the nephews' mother being a space pilot, and she's still alive, just traveling at nearly lightspeed which means time dilution is kicking in. For her she's been flying for just a little while, while back on Earth the nephews have aged up like years since they last saw her. She's basically going to be stuck in space for who knows how long.

Barks had his own canon which Rosa adheres to (and other authors occasionally refer to)

Apart from that it's usually an author or authors having sub-continuities of their own.

Incidentally, the Italians do a lot of this and despite being a big Rosa fan, I rate their duck comics highly... for some reason. PKNA is still criminally underrated and ironically blows american superhero comics out of the water (by opting not to really be a superhero comic and being a tongue-in-cheeck duck x-files instead)

Weekly rag is usually inane lowest common denominator childish stuff (think the nephews becoming game streamers and learning valuable lessons about life while Donald is an unc who almost learns to understand them just to repeat the same setup with a different theme next week), while the pocketbooks are generally higher quality (classical treasure hunting adventures, PKNA type separate continuities etc.)

Kids usually start with the weekly rag, but for instance my grandfather has bought the monthly pocketbooks religiously since the 1980's and he always reads it first before giving it to the kids.

It's not exactly quite that cut and dry, but yeah, in more recent years that's the case. Historically it was worth it to be reading both the weekly magazine and the pocket books, but when you've been running for like 60 years, you'll run out of material, old duck artists retire or die, and the quality dips.

I remember reading a Scrooge story as a kid where Scrooge needs to get profits up for some reason so he decides his flour mills will charge more, Donald says that if bread ends up being more expensive his salary needs to go up (as his salary is apparently contractually tied to the cost of one loaf of bread) and Scrooge is like "whatever the profits I get from this will off-set your salary increase" and you see everyone in town raise their prices so they can buy the more expensive bread which in turn leads to Scrooge raising flour prices more because he keeps not being able to turn a higher profit until a loaf of bread costs a million. Taught me the concept of inflation.

It's not like the filler comics during those earlier days were that bad, either. They did pale in comparison to Rosa's stuff, but I remember enjoying myself reading a shit ton of old copies of Duck comics spanning 70s to 90s during summer vacations and the like. I wouldn't put it entirely on there just being so much to read that it made it fun, because I did return to reread some specific older weekly comics, since they were just better than what's being put out currently.
I kind of stopped reading Duck comics around 2008 or 2009. Dunno how bad it has gotten since then.

Scrooge Comics could contain a lot of Lessons abaut economics in a way even a kid could understand.
One comic where he opens a mall he notices something bad with the shelf donald (and by desing the kid reading it) have no idea what is Scrooge's problem until Donald asks him. Scrooge orders him (or just shouts at him) to look at the shelfs.
Afther a while Donald notices that Quackfellers products are in the middle while McDucks Are either too high or too low. It Unironicaly taught me abaut a Concept of tactis of the sshelf spaces in Supermarkes.
O or when the Donalds trio or kid relatives are selling lemonade while on vacation in grandma. Noone comes then Scrooge rides by and expeins then quite simple and effetive lesson.

The original Walt Disney dickhead Mickey is genuinely great, they just buried him somewhere along the way. Donald was initially just a stupid version of him, but somehow never really got neutered like Mickey.

The original trio of clever dickhead Mickey, idiot dickhead Donald and goodnatured idiot Goofy is the holy trinity, and we've not seen them like that in a long, long time.
>>
>>736493630
Weirdly because of Mickey beeing neutered resulted in that creators could get more creative with Goofy and Donald.
With Goofys arguable peak beeing Goofy Movie (which was better then one could expect) and Donald getting Duck Tales (both Og series and the reebot)

For me it was Yakari, a franco-belgian comic about a native american boy's adventures among sentient animals. I was 5 years old, couldn't read a word but loved looking at the drawings. I still remember the exact moment the words in the speech bubbles stopped being jumbled symbols and became a sequence I could understand. It just happened all of a sudden as I was staring intently at a bubble. Could barely contain my excitement. Every now and then my mom reminisces about it as well.

I wasn't the only one in my class who could read before starting first grade, but I was likely the most advanced by far.

What the fuck is the appeal of Mickey Mouse (the series)? Is this shit meant to be funny? I've never once heard anyone call this franchise funny. Every time I see one of these comics or toons it feels like it was created by one of those stereotypical humourless Russians trying to make his own Looney Tunes.
>>
>>736494815
>Mickey Mouse (the series)
To that, one could ask: which Mickey Mouse are you talking about? Much like Donald, there are a bunch of different artist/writer continuities, different animated shows, different comic runs and the like, some better than the others.
Generally Mickey's issue is that he used to be a rascally asshole type of character (think someone like Bugs Bunny), but throughout the years he was made into a morally good guy type who can do anything and solve everything. Essentially his attributes were transferred over to Donald and Goofy, leaving Mickey with nothing. So there's a shit ton of Mickey material where he's just boring, maybe even just acting as a straight man to Donald or Goofy's antics, but there's the occasional comic or piece of media where he's actually fun, or has fun adventures.
>>

>Whatever you'd call the greater Mickey Mouse "universe"
I think the best term for that is Duckburg. Pretty sure Mickey has been stated to live in different places, but Duckburg generally is where a lot of the comic stories (and DuckTales) take place.
> Including Goof Troop, Ducktales, the three musketeers, ect.
Those are all their own things, really, and are disconnected from one another aside from the characters.
>Does the entire Mickey Mouse franchise even have a fucking name?
Often times it's better to think of Mickey, Donald and Goofy as fictional actors. They star in a lot of different things, but those things aren't necessarily related or even similar. Like, compare those Italian noire detective comics starring Mickey, or the PK (Duck Avenger) comics with Donald, and compare them to the animated shows by Disney.
Within comic circles, it's common enough to group the comics by who the main character is for each story ("oh, this is a mickey story", "this is a goofy story", etc).

It's pretty much because they are rarer. Like, there's still a good number of them, but I just can't bring myself to care about stuff like Super Goof. There's times when Goofy gets up on some silly crusade, like inventing something or trying to get his way in some comical manner, but quite rarely they are anything long lasting or noteworthy. Just very brief one-offs a lot of the time, when the longer stories involve Mickey in the main role.

Yeah, I do call him Uncle Scrooge every now and then. In Finnish, there's even a little funny thing in that he's called Roope-setä. "Setä" means uncle (from father's side), so he should be Roope-eno (to denote uncle from mother's side). At the time when the comics were first localized, they didn't know, and picked setä, and it stuck.
