As the general rule of thumb in Nioh games: on your first playthrough you want to spread your stats to unlock more options for yourself, like jutsu, heavier equipment and different guardian spirits. As opposed to Souls games, where stat spread even on NG would hurt you, here overinvesting in a stat wouldn't result in significant DPS gain, because the scaling is just not very good at this point in the game.

In fromsoft games
10 give 100%
5 and 5 points will give 50% so spreading is not effective
In nioh
10 points - 100%
5 and 5 will give 60-70%
So spreading not only working but make you stronger due to stacking mechanics

It's nice to have some flexibility, and some onmyo stuff is strong
but you don't need it
