Not afraid to admit I'm guilty as charged

so what do you like about horror then if not the scare factor
>>
>>736479176
'Hellraiser' is horror without scare factor :/ I personally love the lore & costume/character designs, also some of the stories are great.
>>
>>736479153
I would say it's fine to be like this but this results in companies removing scary shit from horror games and just basically making lightly horror flavored action. Horror should make you want to turn away from the screen and close your eyes.

I'm not entirely sure what the goal of this thread is, but I'd just like to say that F.E.A.R and Dead Space 2 are proof that good horror games don't necessarily have to be scary.

If they aren't scary, are they horror?
>>
>>736479401
Dead Space 2 and F.E.A.R are unquestionably horror games, and they are both very good games. But they aren't scary at all.
Therefore, horror games don't always have to be scary.
>>
>>736479153
Horror games stop being scary once you play them once
>>
>>736479401
If you include the requirement that it necessarily has to actually scare somebody on earth, you preclude pretty much the entirety of horror fiction up to the 1940's or so.
>>
>>736479431
>horror games don't always have to be scary
so comedies don't always have to be funny?
>>
>>736479401
Yeah, sort of. Like Bloodborne isn't scary, but it's definitely horror. But the horror elements are mostly limited to the setting and story, rather than gameplay which is straightforward action.
>>
>>736479153
Why did horror become the de-facto safe space for troons and the alphabets?

Have you seen the state of new comedy movies and netflix specials? Watch amy schumer and you'll have an answer.
>>
>>736479153
this is my gf and I don't get it
Horror is by far her favourite genre of movies, she's watched thousands but she hates horror games and can't play them at all, regardless of what kind of horror game it is.
>>
>>736479153
I think horror games are gay and mostly just hide and seek shit
Survival horror on the other hand is awesome and not scary just tense
>>
>>736479431
The SUN in dead space scared me although, making it a scary horror game
>>
>>736479464
Yes, as 2000's Hollywood exhaustively demonstrated.
>>
>>736479464
The goal of comedy, as a genre, is to be funny.
But what's the actual goal of horror, as a genre?
Is it really to be scary?

I would argue that games like F.E.A.R, Dead Space 2, and (thanks for the suggestion) Bloodborne are proof that horror can be good without being scary.
>>
just make a program that will show a white eyes screamer every 10-45 minutes at random and you can make a non-scary horror game into a proper horror game
>>
going outside and talking to people is much much much scarier than pressing buttons on a controller

Speaking of horror games,I played Crono New Dawn demo and have mixed feelings.
The graphics have that quintessential crappy UE5 look and the level design was meh.Shooting was okay. The atmosphere and music and tone was great tho.

Horror is great except for the cheap jumpscares which ruin it.

These people are weird
>>
>>736479153
Body horror and existential horror are arguably genres.
>>
>>736479401
horror is the circumstances surrounding the narrative not boo motherfucker jumpscares
>>
i only enjoy horror games through YouTubers and only when I watch them through a small screen I can cover up with my hand
and even then I get scared
i have anxiety so I'm scared 24/7 and horror games freak me out too much
i hate being scared

People love to bring up the retarded meaningless apple thing, but not being able to get scared by games/movies is the real sign that someone has a nonexistent imagination.

I used to hate horror games until I sat down and actually finished one without pussying out halfway through. I love them now.

It's dictated by their intent. An unfunny comedy is still a comedy cos it's trying to be funny.
FEAR in particularly is CLEARLY trying to be scary with all the Alma shit and setpieces, but it's just cheap and pretty unthreatening. But all of them regardless are still trying to "horrify".
DS2 does want to be scary, have you fucking seen the stalker enemies? They are clearly not there just for action. It just skewed the ratio of "horror/action" a bit more to action compared to 1.

Bloodborne sure isn't trying to be scary as a priority, but it does play up the gore and horror of the world, and it depends how you define "scary" or "tense" as most soulslike games can be "scary" in the sense that enemies jump you or you're constantly worried about what's around the corner.
I'd say it's trying to do gory horrifying things, as well as all the lovecraftian stuff, but it's probably such a small priority compared to the action and gameplay that calling it a horror game would be exaggerating the horror aspect.
>>
Horror just needs to be horrifying, not terrifying.
It's just that shrimple.
>>
horror has always been for women in my eyes. for the same reason they love true crime shit and get wet for serial killer faggots. they are masochists, and its a disgusting practice that is far below me.

that being said i don't consider something like alien the movie as being horror. or a game like dead space being horror. those are just pieces of good media with a spooky atmosphere. i'm talking about pure shit sloppa like the saw movies or dead by daylight or something, thats how you know its actually in the horror genre, because it will be garbage.

>>736480494

>>
>>736479431
The horror elemeents of fear were the worst part, especially the reused NO! voice line. The hallway that turns into a pit was amazing though.
>>
are you niggas equating "scary" with "startling"? there's a reason jumpscares are frowned upon while psychological horror isn't.
>>
>>736479176
Aesthetics.
Horror games aren't scary but they often delve into darker themes, so I find them enjoyable. Or (unintentionally) funny like Silent Hill 4.
>>
>>736480587
Jumpscares' scare factor comes from the expectation, not the jumpscare itself.
>>
>>736479378
Dead Space 2 is scary though.
>>
>>736479176
I like the horror aesthetic and the threat of being scared but I dont like actually being scared. Many people like Halloween shit almost in the same way they like Christmas vibes and it has absolutely nothing to do with horror.
>>
>>736479176
For me, I like horror that's more psychological. I don't like horror that's all about jumpscares. Kind of like a "tell, don't show" situation, if that makes sense. I want classic Silent Hill and Resident Evil where often the atmosphere itself is the eerie, weird, or creepy part.

Books do a great job of psychological horror, for example. Most modern horror movies and video games usually rely on jumpscares, which I dislike most of the time because it just feels like the buildups are all resulting in something that you know is coming and something that feels like a cheap rush for 5-10 seconds until you're calm again.
>>
>>736480652
no expectation there will be jumpscares
hence the term "jumpscare" because it is an involuntary reaction
>>

Talking about yourself?
