It has been a long time in coming with a comparison of >Linux gaming getting better, more compatible, and easier to use. Valve has a HUGE part in this particularly with SteamOS and Proton, but there are other facets>Microsoft fucking up more and moreTurning Windows into a giant shitshow that's both cumbersome and invasive. MS has been chasing the last, incorrect fad for too long and the debt is coming due. There's also the issue that Mac decided to just shit the bed outright and refuse to support Vulkan, so its actually easier these days to port a game to Linux than it is OSX. There are other components as well such as some states and countries pushing for more invasive age gating which has more people looking for an OS that is either willing to push back directly or offer one of the "technically present, but wholly incapable of being invasive" shit like how some distros chose to offer an optional field for whatever the user claimed to register as (ie adult, 16-18, 14-16, 13 and under) but does not require any sort of independent verification etc. >>736481010As I mentioned above, even systemd is basically making "technically compliant" versions that have no real teeth that users can opt into using and I see no problem with the option. I've settled on Cachyos for now been using Linux for just under a year now, only ever used windows beforehand and it's mostly been smooth sailing for games with proton, steam and lutris. Took a lot of configuring at the start but haven't changed anything since. The only game to give me a major hurdle was TW: Warhammer 3 for some reason the tree LODS were causing major stuttering but ran smooth when disabled. >>736484996You do realize that the AAA scene has been dying & losing reputation for a decade now, right? It's gotten especially bad in the past 3 years. This group you're so worried about is literally losing followers by the day. The vast majority of AAA slop sales come from consoles, where they don't get the alternatives and wider array of options you get on PC. Out of the top 25 games on steam by playercount, only 4 of them don't support Linux, and it's solely due to the anticheats CHOOSING to not support Linux. Which is hilarious, because all 4 of those games are infested with cheaters anyways. People know that the reasoning behind not supporting Linux now is retarded & as more and more people make the switch & their playerbase dwindles, they will be forced to reconsider Linux support or accept lower playercounts, which is a massive issue because pretty much (if not) all of those games survive off of MTX.Linux is winning not just because it has gotten better, but because as it has gotten better Windows has been getting worse. It accelerates these optics that Linux is a viable alternative and thanks to high profile tubers and the like, Linux has been demystified a bit. No longer do people have this impression that you need to know how to code to use Linux. No longer do they think you need to be a wizard to make games run. The proof is everywhere that you have MULTIPLE different high quality distros where you can get to gaming same as you were on Windows without ever touching the terminal or codemonkeying around if you don't want to.

What the hell is a wine prefix and why does every game have a clone of a system32 Windows folder inside of it taking some 900mb-1gb?I thought a wine prefix just meant a launch comma or something.
>>736522459Iirc stuff like Wine and Proton emulates Windows and its filesystem, which is why the saves will be in emulated folders similar to Windows. Idk tho.
>>736522459You're basically creating a virtual windows environment for wine to use while running your software (registry, a few basic windows apps, some DLLs)You should not have to make more than one unless you're doing something strange that requires a custom setup or you got Bottles because you realized Wine doesn't stop Windows apps from writing stuff to the rest of your system
>>736522525Yeah I get that, but can't there be just one system wide folder that every wine install points to, instead of every game folder back g its individual and duplicate windows files and folders taking up more space?
>>736519749I think you're confused. You don't need to update arch every week. In fact you don't need to update arch ever. You can use it however the fuck you want.
>>736480130I've been using Linux daily for three years. I haven't encountered a game that I couldn't make run. This is mostly just changing the version of proton it's using and the odd launch parameter here and there. What won't work are certain anti cheats, so if you play a lot of multiplayer games it might not be for you. You'll have to do your due diligence and look into the games you play. Emulators run perfectly fine

>>736522575>Wine doesn't stop Windows apps from writing stuff to the rest of your systemRealized recently after playing a pirated version of GTA SA. Annoying as fuck.
>>736522459It's a windows system folder that Wine uses to launch windows games when it emulates windows. I just create a standard few windows folders in the same spot as my games and link all my games I run in Lutris to one of them instead of making a new one every time, otherwise it starts to add up in space. For Steam, Steam does that itself, so no point stressing there.

And the latter I used lutris to set up but it is glitchy and keeps giving me various issues. All other games (I typically play single player RPGs) have worked almost perfectly with minimal fuss.

I've been using CachyOS for a year now and it's been great overall. The only issue I've run into and been unable to fix is that my arcade stick (Mad Catz TE2+) has its button mapping completely messed up. KDE's gaming controller thing detects it fine but won't let me remap the buttons. My workaround has been to run everything through Steam, because Steam Input actually works perfectly. But I play a lot of games on emulators, and I haven't been able to get Steam Input working on those even when running the application through Steam.I'm 90% sure this is another issue that has a fix and I just haven't run into it, but there it is. Very specific use case, but very annoying as a competetive fighting game player.
