no matter what options i try game recording just doesn't work, it only works flawlessly on source games, for everything else it takes a few seconds of clips then gives up. manual recording does nothing at all.
are they ever gonna fix this shit?

shadowplay just works

nvapp or obs
the only downside nvapp has is no audio splitting but i still prefer it for max compatibility

i want to nag valve about it but i want some opinions first

if you have an nvidia gpu just use shadowplay (or if you really don't want to use nvidia's app, use obs with nvenc). i think amd and intel both have something similar, none of this is that difficult to set up.

i use OBS instead already but it'd be convenient if steam's background recording worked so i could use the sharing & management features and not have to have OBS open all the time

if it were instead called "Source Game Recording* (*support for other games experimental)" then i'd have nothing to complain about, but the problem is they're telling you it should work.

>he fell for the steam bloatware shovelware crap

just use OBS and fuck Valve, honestly just stop using steam

so the general opinion is other overlays are generally more reliable for recording.

you don't really have this same distrust with the steam overlay. for as long as that feature has existed it's generally reliable. even with games where opening the overlay is laggy or doesn't work at all, the API still works so you at least still get screenshots and achievements and the A/V feedback related to them so you know it's working.

the problem with game recording is both that it's advertised as working with your games and the frustration that comes with hitting the recording button and finding out that it did not in fact record anything at all.

there's this also annoying rigamarole of doing your own armchair tech support with it, the general steps being
>enable the steam overlay
>opt into the steam beta
>disable steam broadcasting
>check free space
and after that you're still having problems, leaving you wondering, since this recording feature has been there for such a long time now, why any of these steps are still necessary at all when other software seem to already be getting it just right?
