In 1 zombies are more heavily mutated and have a functional mouth in their chest allowing, them to eat/drink, and eventually further develop like we see in the expansions. In 2 they seem to act purely as biological weapons. Zombies no longer seem to function as normal living creatures, and instead appear to have been reshaped into creatures purely designed to kill, with no clear behavior or extended life cycle outside of that singular purpose.
