I feel like most of the time summoner classes kinda suck. Devs don't want to balance or optimize for the actual fun fantasy of having a lot of minions fighting for you so they usually get gay gimmicks.
Diablo 2 or Path of Exile probably do it best for better or worse. Be careful with the latter, quit after the campaign or by like level 80. Something about PoE endgame turns people into insufferable shitheads.
