One of my favorite builds is the stabmaxxer durge. You go five levels into fighter for extra attack (chamption for better crit), max out dex and choose dual wield as the fighting style. Get 3 levels into thief rogue for extra bonus attack, 3 levels into gloom stalker ranger for the gloom stalker extra attack, then your final level back in fighter. Get the risky ring from acf two so all your attacks have advantage so you can sneak attack on every attack. Wield the knife of the undermountain king and the legendary dagger from orin, sarevok's helmet and the very rare bow for crit rolls. Finally, use the durge exclusive cape and the armor of murder you get from the Bhaal quesline, which makes it so enemies around you take double damage from piercing attacks. You can now run around stabbing people six times per turn with advantage sneak attacks that crit on a roll of 15 or above and deal double damage, and every time you kill someone you become invisible. Stack this with the Bhaal buff you get from being evil durge and on the final level you crit on any roll of 12 or above. Stab them all. Turn them into mincemeat. Gore the world in Bhaal's name.

It just plays like a normal fighter build for most of the game, which is just fine. From level five you're already attacking three times per turn, and there are plenty of early game items that add additional die to each of those attacks. Plus you get the invisiblility cape really early as Durge, so you're already benefitting from that. And you become a monster (literal and metaphorical) in the late game.

I thought Gale was fine. He's a good-natured but intentionally flawed character that was brought down by his own ego and over-ambition. I think the joke of disliking him became a bit overblown because he insists on eating your magic shoes during a time that magic items initially feel scarce. Also, there's a really awkward intro to his romance that feels easier to bumble into than any other character.

Beyond that I didn't love the end of his questline, which people tell me you only get a fuller picture of if you're actually playing as him.
