Is it truly one of the best horror games ever made?

By far, yes.
I still greatly prefer, and highly recommend starting with SH1.

Both are some of the most engaging, the most atmospheric, and shockingly influential media products of all time.

Horror is one of those things you only appreciate as a kid.

Otherwise it's a walking simulator.

Just play dead space or RE4.

Yes. That being said horror games are really hard to replay. I enjoyed this when I was a teen and did all the endings but coming back to it made me take it out of my top 10 games. Honestly its probably not in my top 50.

yeah but it's mentally exhausting to play (probably intentionally)

Wrong on all items.
I only started playing horror games as an adult, and I love them.
