I hope they make it 1000$, would be glorious. A recent estimate for 760$ just for the bill of materials and that's not all the costs. There is also the cost of assembly and shipping so see the cost of making an additional PS6 unit ending up below 800$. Sony might be willing to take a small loss on each unit sold but there will also be taxes/tariffs most likely that will be more than that so probably 899$ without disc-drive (around the current price as the PS5 pro) and just 1TB of storage.But of course that is with the current very high ram and storage prices. It's obvious when looking at the specs that PS6 was designed to be cheap to make probably targeting a retail price of around 600$.Perhaps 3 years after launch they will be able to get the PS6 price down to what it was intended but i don't see them delaying the launch by several years since microsoft is going to launch their next 'console' (project helix) regardless (even if they have to charge 1200$+ for it to make a profit).Note that microsoft cannot sell their next xbox at a loss if it's actually going to come with a windows mode letting you install steam and not have to pay to play online. PS6 will however be a closed ecosystem so they will be able to lose money on each console sold and still profit overall from it.But i don't think sony wants to lose much if any money on each PS6 sold to be honest. They can simply charge 899$ to 1000$ initially and have most people remain on PS5 for years until they cut the price. Honestly if i was owning sony i would charge 999$ for PS6 knowing loads of people would buy it anyway (while waiting for GDDR7 prices to come down).
