I only played the first one. The concept was cool the execution was shit. You could be hiding in a shrub, wearing camo, at night, with no light on. Headshot a guy with a bow from a distance and all his buddies would INSTANTLY attack you.

Decent considering the fact they are early access open world crafting survival games.
Exploring the island and its cave system is fun, but base building expects you to grind a bit too much in my opinion.
Cannibal AI is also a bit more advanced than aggro -> kill.
You can scare them, sometimes they revere you if you killed enough of them, they mourn their killed mates etc. In the first game you could even exploit the hidden reputation mechanic and make them almost entirely passive towards you, but the system is/was quite janky and I feel like they dumbed it down in the second game.
I think Subnautica does the open world survival crafting with a focus on exploration better, but if you already played it and want something similar you are better off playing these than Subnautica: Below Average.

Don't even bother with the first. The second is a fully realized concept and done pretty well. It's fun to fight the cannibals, build up your base, and explore farther and farther finding ways to make survival easier.
The story is simultaneously barebones yet grand in scale, and gets pretty trippy. Would recommend, especially coop as I feel it's best played with a pal.

It's fun
The first has way more ideas and a better story in my opinion, but the execution is really rough
The second has great construction mechanics, i spent dozens of hours building shit on it, but it feels like it never lived up to it's potetial
I think the devs were planning to do a lot more mechanics, which i was really excited about, they dropped the lackluster boat house update, and then announced the third game
Really disappointing, but still a fun time, gets even better with friends, and even more if none of you know shit about the games

It's more fun as a base builder with wave defense elements than whatever it's actually trying to be.
The inventory system is extremely ass and quickly loses it's charm.

They're interesting when you're just trying to survive. Following the story just shows how dumb the developers are with their lack of planning.
The main draw is interactions with the cannibals and all the different shit they can do. You can really do some anthropology shit and study them if you don't engage in combat with them at all, though they will keep breaking your stuff they won't outright attack you until you attack them.

The creators of the first one struck gold on accident but they have no clue how to make a proper game.
