Depends on the Mario game. I'd say shit like Mario Sunshine had a deeper plot than the Galaxy movie, even if it was basically "Mario was framed". The new movie is pretty baffling. Yoshi does literally nothing. Rosalina gets 3 minutes of screentime total. They had a quick scene with the baby characters that was completely pointless. They brought Star Fox out of the vault for some reason. Bowser does nothing in the movie, and is actually good for most of it before turning bad again for no real reason. The end fight is dogshit, etc.

You could also compare him to Disney's Pete (who also has a kid in some continuities).Bowser's been left in a really weird place in the Illumination-verse because he's simultaneously had all of his sympathetic traits removed while also being far too goofy to take seriously as a villain. A character in that limbo can still "work" in the case of something like Invader Zim where it's pure comedy so you don't really care if they want to kill people or whatever, but the Mario movies still clearly expect us to care about the wellbeing of, say, Rosalina.I don't know how they fucked up something as simple as "I can't rule the world if it's destroyed."
Yoshi was cute in this but I can't help but think he was a completely useless addition to the plot. He just sorta appears in the second scene of the movie, joins Mario and Luigi and that's that. He doesn't fulfill any sort of narative purpose and is in fact completely detached from the main plot. He's just there because he has to be there. Rosalina basically only having 3 scenes was weird too for a movie centered around Mario Galaxy. It was still a fun watch but the movie was just going through 'member berries as fast as possible instead of actually making a coherent story.
