>>736533682I think Dodonpachi Ressurrection is kind of a bad game, especially when it's recommended for beginners. You see people everywhere telling noobs to start with it, because it's the "best" the genre has to offer, but it's an ugly-as-fuck game, totally unbalanced (the Strong mode practically carries you through the game on its own), has a slowdown gimmick that adds to the fact that Cave doesn't know how to program and the games already run like shit to begin with (so you have 4 different speeds the game can run at any given moment), etc.I think even Toaplan's games are better suited for beginners. They're more basic, but they'll make a much better first impression, and once the player gets more familiar with the genre, maybe they can waste time with Dodonpachi Ressurrection...

Horizontal dadshmups are designed more like traditional action games, have less of the genre tropes, and they're just very fun. They're also not super hard by modern shmup standards, but they're not designed on purpose to be baby games. They were very hard for their time and can still be tricky.

>>736547980Nah, Gradius is like 90% positioning options and knowing the correct power up order. The difficulty of the games is extremely inconsistent. Some are totally backloaded into the loops and others are just trollfests. I always recommend mushi original because it's pure fundamentals and pulls stuff from a lot of different games, even if I personally don't think it's among CAVE's best. It doesn't have any convoluted scoring or subversive patterns, just basic shmup stuff, and if you can clear it you'll have the knowledge to get into anything in the genre. Horizontal shmups generally don't even rely heavily on bullet patterns, they're more about stage hazards and power ups.
