It tried to copy the whole heros things form WC3 at some point early in development, then sorta gave up iirc.
It also did copy, or try to copy, SC2 "HIGH APM MAKE GAME BETTER GUDDER, PLEASE PRESS X FOR LARVA" gimmicks which not even SC2 players enjoy.

This is my only problem with SCII and hence why I rather play the campaigns (even if the story is utter shit after WoL, but mechanics-wise all the missions are FUN) or go custom games.

The creeping is more important than the hero units anyways. Creeping forces a specific type of playstyle that is exclusively only enjoyed by people who play WC3.

It's not really a flop if nobody reasonably expected it to succeed or be good. Like, I once thought "maybe it might be worth playing for the campaign once" but when more information started coming out pre-release, that "might be" quickly vanished. I would say it had about-par performance.

While this is true in the sense that most players get into the MP scene "organically", by enjoying the campaign and wanting to play the game more, the problem here isn't really the design. If it had been actually good then I would assume it might have found a small dedicated following, perhaps even grown over the time within that niche. But it wasn't good. Why would anyone "entrenched into the 4 or 5 titles" want to switch over to an inferior game? They wouldn't! They play them because they're actually good (even if fundamentally niche) games.

Well, I like literally everyone else hasn't played the game so I can't provide exact details (for all I know it might be supremely deep, wonderful "meta" that does exactly what you want, encouraging neither deathballing or skirmish unit harass, but functions exactly how you would want it to, etc, etc), but from videos and screenshots it's clear that it looks like shit, feels like shit, and sounds like shit.

It's not that the game was designed to be ugly or for units to feel completely sterile, inert, unresponsive and unimpactful (contrast that to e.g. Brood War in which even the lowly zergling attacking stuff feels and sounds impactful). They just couldn't pull off passable, never mind decent, never mind good, art. Fuck, I just realized from OPs pic related that the game had three races: they are so fucking bland and forgettable even that didn't stick to my mind. And I assure you the developers didn't consciously design the races to be so lame: the devs obviously tried to create cool shit but they were hacks who couldn't do anything better.

Exactly I don't think the retards here understand what an actual flop means. Highguard wasn't a flop because the writing was on the wall. Everyone was saying the game was doing to be dog shit, it releases, and surprise surprise it's fucking dog shit. The same thing happened with Concord as well although, I will say there were much more people defending Concord than Highguard...pretty much everyone on the planet knew Highguard was DOA. There were actual retards trying to defend Concord even though anyone with a brain saw the writing on the wall. Money spent doesn't = flop.
