Some characters in the game speculate that Marika shattered the ring in reaction to some tragedy like the Night of the Black Knives but I don't think that holds with what we know she actually did, specifically that she took grace away from Godfrey and the Tarnished and prophesied their eventual return to the Lands Between when she would bestow grace upon them again and they would fight to brandish the Elden Ring.That she did all that means she obviously had planned the entire thing from way back when so it wasn't just some woman moment crash out that made her shatter it.

Her eldest son and favorite child had his soul destroyed while his body grew corpulent and corrupted. One of her daughters lost her body and basically vanished. The Golden Order that once aided her seemed like a prison that was slowly choking the life from the Lands Between. So Marika sought to escape it through the shattering. Maybe it was short-sighted, but it's not like I can't see where she's coming from.
