I think feats aid characters in reinforcing their identity and sepcialization than their physical appearance, while granting a far larger numner of options to choose from. Although suboptimal, I've always liked picking up skill expert to get at least a +4-5 in a specific skill I couldn't afford a high ability score for. Even in 5.5e human is still a wonderful choice because two origin feats add a lot more characterisation, especially skilled, tough and magic initiate. They're just very versatile. A lot of my characters begin raceless and end up human because that's how I could best represent it mechanically. Other systems may vary.

I don't get self inserting. I like to make different characters with wildly different backgrounds. It's really like playing with action figures in virtual form. The sense of accomplishment and enjoyment for me comes to how close I can make the character in the game to what I imagined in my head.
