Study EMMM's games. They are long and they contain words that refer to high-brow things and other words that refer to low-brow things like Souls games. That's been the template for modern games since EMMM, and it's one EMMM invented. Whenever a dev sits down to write an ambitious game, he first writes the big number 1000 on a piece of paper because that's how many books he needs to reference. Then he makes two columns, High and Low. In the High column he puts all the things he learned in school, and in the Low column he puts all the mass-market products he indulges in because in the end he's a regular guy like you or me. Then he creates a McGuffin. Then he comes up with as many funny name as he can like "Alice Xbox-Niggurath." And then he strings together a bunch of wild scenes the characters star in while they search for the McGuffin. But of course they never get it, the post-EMMM dev must end the game abruptly because to do otherwise would be to succumb to base mass-market narrative techniques and this is art, baby. And there you have it. It's not easy to do. I only thought of one funny name, but you have to think of at least 50.

The sort of schizophrenic balance of broken vs broken makes the game exciting until for the first playthrough.And the rough art plus stock assets is cute and charming, actually. Both this and the sequel have gameplay that's pretty easy to break if you're any good at JRPGs, if you're not then you'll end up as pic related come BS2. BS1 is largely a blatant Demon Souls ripoff plotwise. This is intentional.BS2 is a much more polished game than BS1 is, I'd put it at about an 8/10. Both BS1 and BS2 are plotfag games despite first appearances, with BS1 largely acting as the setup and BS2 largely acting as the payoff for a lot of BS1's setup meaning you shouldn't skip straight to this if you care about the plot at all. BS2 is a different story though since its strongest builds all require a very specific setup, and while that setup is obvious enough to anyone with any experience in turn based RPGs it's not something the average player will just randomly walk into like they would in BS1, with most players only really gaining access to said shit deep into DLC 2 unless they spam cycles in the base game content. DLC 3 was designed around that kind of power for a reason as well, even if it doesn't go far enough with it in my opinion.
