>Appearing on the Mike & Rami Are Still Here podcast with publisher Mike Rose and developer Rami Ismail, Pope looked back on the success of Papers, Please and Obra Dinn, as well as his smaller efforts since. But when asked how he feels about the modern development landscape and what his plans are for his next major release, he reveals that he's worried about idea theft from generative AI and other developers.
>"The situation feels different to me," he says. "You don't really talk about stuff when you're working on it because it's going to get slurped up by AI or people are gonna copy it, or something else like that. It's not a hard rule, I just don't feel as comfortable talking about the stuff I'm working on."

That's valid, you can develop games much faster using AI.
Specifically for indie games it's entirely possible to recreate the core mechanics using AI, if not the story content.

Unbelievably retarded take. Lucas Pope managed to insult his own value as a game developer.

This is the guy who managed to kickstart two whole indie genres on his own. Even now I'm still seeing Papers Please-likes getting made. Exactly how is an AI supposed to steal an entire new genre of game?
>>
>>736559640
Obra dinn was a masterpiece and papers simple is a simple but original classic.
This man is 100% right.
Fuck aislop
>>
Generative AI should be banned globally. It's legally definable, and it doesn't hurt where AI can and is doing good. There is literally no good use case for generative AI.
>>
>>736559640
I wonder what he is making. He did say in an Obra Dinn interview he wants to make something his kids could play.
>>
>>736559640
If he's concerned about his ideas being copied he's right to keep things close until the games are close to release.
Most media is built on at least some kind of idea theft, this isn't a long-term concern.
He's one of the guys that'll benefit most from AI flooding new releases because people will always seek out works from well-known artists like Pope.

Copycats i can definitively understand, the amount of porn Papers, Please parodies are on the double digits so waiting to reveal how your new game plays is a smart choice, but AI? Seems a bit silly, while his games are visually interesting neither is particularly pretty outside of their context and i wouldnt play a game because of the same aesthetics.

AI makes it much easier to code something up.
Most people know AI for image and video generation, but that's nothing.
Using it to code things up mindblowing to the point that some digital firms had their stocks crash because it would be easy to just code up the same platform from 0.
We're on the brink of an absolute flood of games, programs, operational systems, anything code based.
It's like someone invented the mechanical loom and now fabric is 10 times cheaper.

Something that was feasible to do before AI even existed. In the end bootlegs are nothing new and people don't get confused about what the actual original is. Especially if the original is coming from a dev with reputation. Especially if the bootleg literally was unable to do the actual game idea due to a lack of actually having the game to copy.

There's a lot of intricacies to Obra Dinn's premise to just copy over a vague description. It's a bit like thinking you'll be able to write a gripping murder mystery story on the idea of a whodunnit alone. It really does feel like it undermines the skill that goes into a game like that.

It never meant that. It was an Independent Artist. As in not owned by or employed by a studio that takes on contracts from a major label publisher. You can have your own 100 man studio that self publishes and be Indie right up until the point where you start buying in other studios to do work for you as a primary publisher. Then your Indie label becomes a publishing label.

Indie games have a sort of "false success" problem. I can't think of a better way to label it. Basically if you're a guy aged 20-35 that has only ever held a job that pays $40-$100k a year and your cat simulator game you made while on unemployment suddenly makes $1mil. then you're pretty much set for life. But to a AA let alone a AAA studio, $1mil. doesn't even pay for the coffee. The latest CoD "flops" when it can't clear a billion.
So this leads to Indies winning the app store/steam lottery where just dumb luck and randomness leads to the right streamers playing their game at the right time for the sales to "flood" in. They will then invest that money into their next game, which then flops because they were really not that special and their next grand idea wasn't any better than their first one, the dumb luck money just found another target.
See Jonathon Blow. Braid was meh, but it was part of a new market with few choices. He can't follow up that "success" because he's a 5/10 game designer at best and only has his name to trade on.

Long before AI slop, long before Indie shovelware, Nintendo realised that showing off new footage of their games at E3/Shoshinkai was just giving the shovelware producers a chance to steal your ideas and fart them out onto the shelves while Miyamoto was still laboring over the details. Nintendo games would launch with a core game design that felt stale even though they technically invented it.
(For the 20 year olds here, yes, Nintendo DID innovate. A long time ago.)

There are several indie games that already got cloned before they were even released, including Baba Is You. (Some of them went unnoticed for months, others were quick to get pulled down because the developers were retarded enough to also use very similar art instead of doing something different, like in Baba's case where they just recolored the existing sprites.)
It happens a lot with "concept heavy" indie games where the game is centered around one simple fun hook, which of course becomes easy to copy once you've already seen it.

I'm not against games being cloned but obviously I understand why an indie developer wouldn't want to show his game too early, especially if he's only 1 guy. A team of 5 guys with AI today could definitely beat you to the punch.

Even if that's true, the original sells better than an awful AI clone. The point is that you can ask AI to make you a sequel to Frozen and it still won't have the box office returns of Frozen 2.
>>
>>736567184
Doesn't matter. A shitty AI copy has a budget of 10$ at most and takes little to no effort to make relatively speaking. As long as they sell more than a couple of copies they still profit from the ordeal.
>>
>>736567184
Why are people using such retarded analogies. Frozen is a super high budget work, it's not an indie game. Yes you can't make a clone of the 800 million dollar budget GTA 6 game with an AI, yet you absolutely can make a clone of Papers Please just with a demo available, and release it months before the original developer.

Normally I think it would be nice for every country to have their own intranet but just about every organization, whether it's a company or a nation, in charge of such an endeavor would have every reason to enshittify it, whether it's through turning it into a propaganda outlet or monetizing the fuck out of it. I'm not worried about India because I know their culture will normalize with the rest of the world within a century or so, I am more worried about tyrants that figure out how to subjugate people more efficiently through technology. It's not retarded at all. AI still doesn't innovate. It just recycles/pulls from ideas that are already out there. His concern is legitimate as he has a history of setting trends, doing things differently, and generally coming from left field. People making slop shouldn't be worried about theft, because they're already barely modifying things that already exist. If I was him, I'd have the exact same modus operandi. Maybe you don't truly grasp how frothing-at-the-mouth all these AI fags are to jump on something ASAP & use AI to shit their turd out first to capitalize on sales. And yet terrified someone will steal his brilliant 100% original ideas?
>AI is clearly a problem in the indie sphere and he's not the first one to state so

Artists like their ideas to not be co-opted by a dozen mouthbreathing scam artists, shocker.
>yeah we go back to the good old days of
