In modern games, this idea of player choice has been neglected at best and abandoned at worst in favor of having narratives that are essentially condescending lectures without any room for nuance where the writers attempt to beat the audience over the head with a particular sentiment. The game has its fair share of cringe (I’m looking at you, Cassidy, and your long dick johnson rants) but the cringy moments are minuscule and easy to miss compared to the rest of the entire game. You could just as easily take Boone and ED-E with you for your entire first play-through while missing companions like Veronica, Cass, or Arcade given their locations and recruitment requirements.
