Is Spyro the most flopped mascot platformer character ever made? The only time I've seen him posted here is with 'that' image. You'd think something as simple as le purple dragon would have ended up as a more mainstream thing

No, that would be redesigned Donkey Kong 2025).
>>
>>736562180
Not by a long shot.

Remember Binx? Didn't think so.

they used his life essence to push skylanders

Spyro had a respectable career, honestly.

A flop would be something like Kao the kangaroo or Skylar and Plux

No. The most flopped is one normies like you have never heard of and most autists on this board barely recognize. I can't name the character, and you cannot either because it has descended into the void of obscurity as most flops do.
With that said, picrel is my pick. I had a blast with it as a kid but it never went anywhere. It was made by the same studio that makes Dead by Daylight.
>>
>>736563592
I actually do remember that one. It had some powers and a bunch of rail shooting segments?
>It was made by the same studio that makes Dead by Daylight.
Lel holy shit

>Spyro had a respectable career, honestly.
This. Sometimes it's okay to let something end, especially if newer entries are shitty. Some fans need to realize, that nothing is better than something.
>>
I just played Spyro 1 with my wife the other day
hadn’t played it in like a quarter century

it’s genuinely a great platformer for its era, the only issues I have with the game are about the fucking super charge mechanic being weirdly finicky and not fun
if they removed the super charge jumps it would be a timeless classic

I still really enjoyed it though, great game
>>
>>736562918
Kao the Kangaroo is a beloved and respected series in Poland.
>>
>>736562180
No, enter pic related. I know I played it at least once, but it's up there with other fever dream 3d platformers.

Super charge jumps are part of what makes the game so much fun. The central point of the first Spyro is exploration. They invented LoD scaling for this game because they wanted to put a cliff in the distance and make the player wonder if and how they can reach that cliff. Super charge jumps let you get to otherwise inaccessible areas but it's never obvious where you can reach, you have to use your brain. It makes it so much more fun than just putting something that you can only smash with super charge there.

The focus on undiluted exploration is what makes the first Spyro much better than subsequent ones. IMO the series already started to fall off with the second entry when they introduced minigames.

/v/ used to have seemingly daily threads about the old Spyro games talking about color theory and shit. The PS1 games are beloved on here, and some people even enjoy A Hero's Tail too.

I beat Enter the Dragonfly the other day, they really cooked with this game up until the final and only boss.

Definitive edition makes it far more playable than the release version.
>>
>>736565460
>load into new game
>head bash into the final boss portal
>beat the game within 5 minutes

Jokes aside, I've tried time and again to replay this game and I've never thought it was anything more than pure dogshit. Though, I was unaware there was a mod of it. What does the definitive edition change?
>>
>>736565460
Please say they simply fixed some gameplay issues and didn't go all out with indulgent bullshit.
>>
>>736562180
the devs genuinely couldn't figure out what to do with him. you'd think that maybe making the dragon grow up through the series would be obvious, but oh well. normgroids are gonna normgroid.
>>736564263
another part of why it's the best is that there's absolutely no FORCED backtracking to earlier levels, you can 100% any stage the first time through. meanwhile, in the spyro 2, you can't even 100% the FIRST level that you start in.
>>
>>736564594
>>736564664
I wouldn't exactly call Tak a flop. It's not like a legendary franchise or anything, but it got a full trilogy of console games and some other spinoff shit. Nick killed it with retard-tier decisions; putting a cartoon out several years after the games had stopped being made, deciding that the cartoon was going to have nothing to do with the events of the games, and making the accompanying console tie-in game play nothing like the prior installments. A Tak 4 made by Avalanche (which they had been in the process of developing) probably still would've sold decently in 2007 or whenever.
>>
>>736564926
the super charge jumps are the only part where you have to stop and go "okay what fucking direction do they want me to go and why the fuck doesn't this work like it wants to"
given, tree tops has the guys show you the path, but it stopped all momentum in the game at two of the four times they throw it out

if they at least fixed how shitty it feels to do the jumps themselves it would be fine, but holding charge, jumping while holding charge, and then releasing charge but not too early or too late felt like it needed some tweaks
combining those two parts together just make the sections jarring as fuck compared to how smooth the rest of the game flows
>>
>>736562180
Sorry Snoys, but the purple dragon owned by Disney is going to be a more mainstream thing.
>>
>>736565528
>I've tried time and again to replay this game and I've never thought it was anything more than pure dogshit
I was the same when I was a kid. Many years later I eventually pulled my pants up and tried to finish the game to say I finally beat it and found it to be even worst than I remembered it as a kid. Shitty game froze on me multiple times. I eventually finished all the worlds just to realize I haven't seen a single boss fight. I still don't even think I finished the game.
>>
>>736567984
>I eventually finished all the worlds just to realize I haven't seen a single boss fight.

That's because Ripto is the only "boss fight" and I use quotations because it's the worst boss fight in the series. And that's saying something considering Spyro has never had very strong bosses outside of a select few.
>>
>>736565528
>>736565726
Most of the lag gone, lots of bug fixes ( like being able to fight Ripto early), and some cut content re-added, from what I could tell the cut content seems to be all cosmetic or audio related.
Look up Definitive Edition.
>>
>flops so hard they make multiple franchises and reboots of it
why are thirdies allowed to have internet access again?
>>
>>736562180
he has like 20 games. not including skylanders.
>>
>>736564926
It's fun except the 1 level in the treetops that monofocuses on it.
>>
>>736565460
I think EtD is passable if you just ignore getting gems and only go for dragonflies. Like just kind of chill and explore the levels and do the minigames that don't suck, going for 100% it just too much of a chore with zero reward.

that would be gex, hugo, juju, kao or ty.
>>
>>736565962
I'm surprised they didn't capitalize on some sort of monster-collecting aspect what with the jujus. They had fun designs and weren't generic elemental-based creatures.
>>
>>736569676
I think it's time that everyone grew up and admit that scrimblo bimblo games were never good in the first place
>>
>>736562180
Back when the kids had characters with attitude.
>>
>>736562180
The PS1 Spyro games have people arguing that one is better than another, but they're all good enough as mascot platformers. Later entries were so horrible, people got the impression that Spyro on the cover was like a mark of no quality.
>>
>>736569676
Ty was my jam, obviously I had Jak, Ratchet and Sly as my go to for the PS2, Ty just filled that little hole in-between all of them. Help that it was made by an Australian studio, and wears it's country pride on it's sleeves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMv-tTBh2Us
That intro segment for Ty 2 got my 10 year old self hyped as fuck.
>>
>>736570579
You have that backwards. Appreciating scrimblo bimblo games is growing up. Not appreciating them is extended adolescence.
>>
>>736562854
Blinx got 2 games.

Remember Zero? Now that is a fucking failure.
>>
Spyro and Crash schooling Nintendo on how games are made caused a chain of events that resulted in Nintendo desperately trying to recruit women and minorities and seniors into games because literally no one else was buying their casual shit, which ended up killing games forever
>>
>>736570579
And yet their existence is what led to so many improvements to gaming as a whole. If Insomniac didn't make a game about a purple dragon we'd still be looking at level designs like the OG Tomb Raider not wide open vistas. LOD tech evolved thanks to those guys. Crash's existence helped Sony understand just how their own system worked as Andy ripped the thing apart to make Crash possible. Not being able to appreciate the mastery in these games because they're "for children" is immaturity at it's highest.
The other amusing thing is that the "mature" games for "mature" gamers of today all hold your hand more than these scrimblo bimblo games ever did.
>>
>>736562180
Not even close. There's a fuckton of mascot platformers that only lasted for one game.
>>
a
>>
>>736562180
Like all of them "flopped" because they're old.. Mario is a thing because Nintendo is basically just a big mascot company.

If you believe canadian guy eh spyro is getting a new game this year by toys for bob
>>
>>736562180
Spyro was a technical marvel when it released, it basically invented LOD. The "most flopped" platformers you don't even know the names of. Insomniac recognized there was a limit on how far they could stretch the gameplay concept of Spyro and that's okay. Not every series needs infinite games
>>
>>736575479
and yet they have been churning out lombax strafe simulators for 25 years
>>
>>736563592
the art direction and music in this game was 10/10

I said that they don't "need" infinite games, not that studios don't try. And that's mostly at Sony's behest, not their own. Them and Naughty Dog are both movie game slaves now

Spyro’s first two games were good. His next two were rush jobs, then Skylanders was a failed franchise. I bet Activision toyed with bringing him back as an NFT or some shit in 2021.
>>
>>736563739
Yeah transform into different lizards for platforming and puzzles.
>>736575548
Yes it was. Great stuff.

>>736569676
Gex was fun, though I only remember about half of it. I was given that game and Ratchet and Clank 1 by a friend of my grandmothers. She was a 60+ yo woman gamer.
Ty was and still is fun. The HD remake proved (to me at least) that the game wasn't just rose tinted glasses. I did 100% the game twice since the HD release. Banger soundtrack. I will still get Rainbow Cliffs, Walk in the Park, and Ship Rex stuck in my head.
Bush Rescue was alright. Still fun, and again, HD remake showed it still holds up decently. IDR Night of the Quinkin or whatever the 3rd game was called though.
>>
>>736575846
You skipped over quite a few Spyro games there

>>736575846

Yeah, up to 2016~2017 when nsane trilogy changed discourse around crash and spyro forever. Of course the board getting overran by faggots and tourists doesn't hep either.
At least we got nitro fueled out of the whole ordeal (which was brilliant), but leaving that aside it wasn't worth it. PS1 spyro threads pre-remake era were the comfiest fucking thing and they'll never come back.
