The Top row doesn't need any introduction beyond that i think demonbane is a well done super robot story that resonates with me at a personal level. I also think MGS1 is underrated, at least i don't think enough people appreciate Snake's actual character and themes of the game and just reduce it to 'War bad' when the game isn't even about that, politics or nukes.
As for the bottom row. I think FE4 has an underrated cast, i think seliph is a great lord with some moments like when he gets to calphy and his convo with Oifey that really make him feel alive.
And i think both persona 3 and twewy should be obligatory 'plays' during your formative years as i think they are great coming age stories and can help you sort some thougths here and there.
Astlibra is TTGL is vidya form, and i'm a sucker for true love stories.
I've come to appreciate OoTs narrative a lot in recent years. Its low in charactrer but i think it's pretty rich in themes, kinda like The Little Prince but for vidya.

if you enjoy a very classic tolkien-esque adventure around the world uniting the good races against a evil, doesnt insist upon itself and is a really fun simple not-uk/not-france fantasy world with a strong companion cast

>KotOR 2
If you like a nice spin on Star Wars, with some very strong villain cast and companion cast, as well as deeply branching dialogues, not a strong conclusion sadly and expects a KotOR 3 that never came

id spoil too much if i speak, but its not the best gameplay game, but it made me tear up at the end

I think the first game was good, and about as good as you gonna get out of the guy with fucked up life finding a daughter/son that he bonds with and is his light in the world, very nice writing imo again doesnt insist upon itself, ignore the terrible sequel

I think it's the best telltale game, honestly kind of carried by artstyle/atmosphere, but assuming it gets a sequel that is good, I think it has very good dialogue and cast

Not enough space to talk about everything but I think there's a lot of honorable mentions that idk which one I'd put in top 10 as many are also flawed but have good things about them.

I really like it when themes are carried through like some of these. DQV I love the from child to father story the game does, never really seen a JRPG attempt something like that again.

The best story in video games, or at least, of what I've played. Very much feels like a plot that actually had its 9 years of development behind it. Strong sense of pathos, and a masterclass of symbolism. Still thinking about it today.
>Metro 2033
Extremely tight adaptation that benefits from excising a lot of the original's meandering. Excellently involves the player in its themes. Extremely soulful game besides.
>Banner Saga
Cheating slightly as the overall narrative is more what's important here, but the moment to moment writing is probably the best of what I've played. Plot is strong and player choices do matter.
>Deus Ex 1
Classic. Both 'about' something real, and a very interesting and relevant projection of the future. Memorable characters and iconic deliveries.
>Deus Ex 4
Very tightly written entry in the same series. Some on-the-nose social politics get in the way of otherwise fantastic quest and narrative design. Unfortunately unfinished, but it's good enough you can see the trajectory and story beats of what would have come next.
>Lone Survivor
Psychological horror with a broader message that doesn't just feel like a retread of Silent Hill 2. A very strong sense of 'mes en scene' where everything is always just a bit off, and there's very few answers.
>Darkwood
A very strong study on how less is more. An excellent story told mostly in atmosphere. Multiple 10/10 endings.
>Demon's Souls
Excellent albeit minimalist story. Masterful use of mechanics as metaphor, and more thematically elegant than any other Souls game after it.
>Spec Ops: The Line
Kinda overrated, but the subversive theme was really bold for the time. Definitely a game that came out swinging with a message.
And if I had to pick a #10, it'd be:

Pretty much just a very well written action movie. Tight and snappy dialogue, good twists, and an excellent expansion on the concepts of the first game.

Darkwood is pretty good, very disgusting looking game and very fucked up and oppressive feeling from beginning to end, but really interesting even if I had hoped they'd reveal a bit more in the end about what actually happened but I guess a open end mystery ending is probably for best.

I don't care if some thirty odd hours are spent on complete filler, it's the only game I ever played where I liked more than five members of the cast by the end and one of the rare ones where I'm actually excited by the prospect of story DLC.
In the time it took for me to finish this game, it successfully sold me on the following

>Hating the disabled
>Lazy people innately being subhuman
>Genocide is probably bad
>Just because a girl if your childhood best friend, the love interest can still be the hot taller dominatrix girl
>It is unjust to kill someone before they do anything truly wrong, but once they fuck with you mercy is completely off the table
>Brainwashing is a moral good when it's done to people who don't like you
>Suicide bombing is bad because it never works

Rest will be a simple list just because

Yeah, I oddly had fun with going through that game. Personally, I think an ambiguous ending fits Darkwood rather than an open and shut conclusion.

I'll give a brief explanation for each.
>Live A Live
Genuinely my favorite RPG, and probably game, of all time. I played it exactly when I was supposed to for all the beats to hit perfectly at home and it has stuck with me since. Remake was OK.

Second place but everything I said above still rings true for this one.

Far and away my favorite NIS game, I still believe it's one of the closest perfect blends to humor and storytelling as a combined unit.

I usually hate these artsy fartsy type games but damn, not only was the rugby pretty fun but the characters were pretty damn endearing. It was tough saying goodbye to a good few of them, but at least I got my Orb Wife.

Had a rough time deciding between Zero 3 and Zero 4, but the ending to Zero 4 really does clinch it for me. Series really should be viewed as a whole, though.

Yeah, it's just crossovers and fanservice but having played half of the games here (FF1-FF6), I'm a real big sucker for a lot of the fanservice. One day I'll get around to the 3D FFs.

I wish I could include it as a double pick with Rondo because it is half the experience, but Alucard's half of the story is certainly the much more full-bodied of the two.

This one surprised me. The story is admittedly rather simple, but I loved the vignettes between every level showing the characters all living life. It's the little things, sometimes.

This one requires explanation. There IS no story in A2. Luso does nothing at all and leaves Ivalice the same as he entered. This is undeniable, and yet, I was utterly charmed by the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" feel the game had with its very definitive status quo that it had to follow. It's so unique in a way few games are story-wise, and I love it for that. Not a common opinion, but it's my genuine one.

My memory is a bit blurry but I don't recall it really resolving everything. If I understand correctly the forest is a living organism of these alien creatures that landed and absorb land and have humans come into their mastership to be used as slaves and feed on them. But then if you burn it and escape, you think you escaped, but the game hints pretty heavily that the city you are in has something off about it, and that your cozy home is not as cozy as you think and you see little signs of odd shit like humans not behaving as intended or something weird about your bed and its hinted that you havent escaped, so wouldnt that make that ending kind of a red herring too? Or am I mismembering

Yeah, a bit of a backwards order but that's more or less it. Some kind of entity is in the woods drawing people to the center, and turning them into 'sleepers'. It could be benevolent, but is also likely the cause of the expanding woods. It's not super clear exactly how much is real and how much is a dream after this point, but when you get to your apartment you can choose not the sleep, and instead find the roots in your apartment and, wake up from being a sleeper. You get a flamethrower and end up starting a fire that destroys the entity and burns down a huge amount of the forest. In one version, the Polish military comes and helps some of the survivors from the village in Act 1.

Nier is a well-executed tragedy. It's one of the few in the medium where all the major players have pretty reasonable motives and aren't being dumb for the sake of drama. It's just a bad situation with no easy solutions, especially since few of the characters have a good understanding of the big picture.

Soul Sacrifice has an interesting plot with some good twists and cool concepts. It's also presented really well.

Blue Reflection is unusual in that the real meat of the narrative is the protagonist's character development. The story very firmly revolves around her, and she's an interesting enough character for that to be compelling. It's also one of the rare games where characterization is handled with some subtlety, rather than being directly dictated to the player or having someone's personality shift only after big, dramatic events and declarations.

Virgo vs the Zodiac is mostly carried by the unique setting and some fun characters. The endings are also interesting.

I liked Devil Survivor's depiction of a society falling into chaos after the emergence of supernatural forces, and the plot has some good interactivity to it.

Xenosaga sets up a really compelling setting and plotline. I think the sequels and development woes in general ended up largely squandering its potential, but I still respect what it achieved, and enjoyed discussing it with some friends who played it back when it released.

The only saints game i played but i liked the hood and gangsta stuff in it. I was always looking forward to the next cutscene.

I still need to play the OG but i do like MD's reflections on opression even today. It also kind of made a mark in my life as i bought it a day before the invasion of Ukraine.
>Sunset Overdrive
Made me chuckle a few times and it had a lot of style.
I don't really play games for their stories but a good one can definetly improve a game.
