More than half his skill tree is noob-traps that do literally nothing.
Attack Rating was heavily gimped and Monster HP was boosted when LoD came out.

Wind Druid is the best budget character to solo Hell imo. Solid damage, not many physical immunes, and hurricane is great for killing mobs of weak enemies and slowly killing physical immunes. Cyclone armor makes you practically invincible against fire, ice, and lightning as long as you keep casting it, so you don't have to worry about those negative immunities much. Get enough skill points to add to oak's sage for more survivability for you and your mercenary. We don't acknowledge the Warlock.

Making it largely depend on character level is stupid. You can get a combat shrine buff that gives you like 20k-30k attack rating and you'll see your chance to hit is in the 80s, because you're a bit underleveled. And of course casters don't have to worry about this at all.

It sucks because I find weapon based damage a lot more interesting, there are so many more stats and customization for it, while for casters it's just +1 skills, a little bit of cast rate to reach the reasonable breakpoint, and the occasional +% to an element.

And then your offhand should be as slow as possible, like a Legendary Mallet. Offhand speed doesn't matter at all.

Anyone else feel like melee just isn't enjoyable in D2 and it's clones (PoE, etc)? Warrior in D1 was much more fun somehow and I can't fully articulate why, but I think it has to do with the slower pacing of the game.

Basically every mechanic in the game is designed to punish melee characters, which is still largely true in D1 but you still have to consider positioning and tard wrangling ranged mobs a lot more which gives you something to do.

I learnt my lesson the hard way when I made it to Hell on a Barb. I sexclusively play solo and it was just pointless. Like smashing my head on a brick wall.

I don't get why werewolf and werebear isn't considered better than barb aside from enigma. They attack really fast with 2-handed weapons, having the benefit of the much higher weapon damage. Werebear Druid can reach 6 frame attack speed, which is only 1 frame slower than frenzy. You can do a hybrid build with maul and and fire claws which adds a ton of fire damage. And they're super tanky with the health and defense. Only downside is bad mobility on werebear.
