Just finished FF9 today for the first time and I have to say its one of the best RPGs I've played. I loved the characters, the setting and the music. Just felt like a 5/5 game. I tried to get into 8 but it felt like tedious to me, even after understanding how the game works including the junction system. Vivi being implied that he is dead at the end was sad.

FFIX has great visuals and music, cool concepts and good characters for the first half and then completely shits itself right after disc 2.Seriously, everything from the start of the third disc onward is so strangely bad that it feels like other developers came in half way through and had no idea what they were doing.It's a shame because I love what IX was setting up but it just falls apart after a certain point.
