Prep rounds slow the pace of fights down significantly and enemy design reinforces this. In base DD, surprise + stun + damage blitzing the enemy down is the best strategy outside of boss fights. Black Reliquary solved this problem, but replaced it with a far worse one, which is that fights are just samey in a different way, a much slower way. If I had to choose one, I'd rather have blitzing still be on the table than have every hallway fight being a slog of applying buffs, debuffs, and needing a designated stress healer in every comp. The other major "designed by people who have played too much DD" problem is the difficulty. Noobs regularly bounce off of base Darkest Dungeon. Someone who beat the game normally once or twice is going to bounce off of Black Reliquary just as hard. BR wants you to take every fight 100% seriously, and as a result it's only going to appeal to hardcore DD players. It isn't all bad, there's a lot of interesting and good ideas, but they're drowned out by some frankly baffling core gameplay decisions. I actually mostly like the aesthetic choices for the valley too, but there are definitely some hits and misses in the enemy design department.
