RE4make suits the new tone cohesively, RE4OG has better set pieces and is longer

Personally I prefer the original but I think they're both great. The biggest difference maker for me is the story, I think the story and the voice acting in the remake are really, really bad, which is a shame because I don't feel outright negatively about basically anything else

I declare the general consensus is RE4 remake has better combat and a few other things, while the OG is better at everything else such as the atmosphere, music, dialogue, cutscenes, designs, etc, and since gameplay is the most important, they're both on par with each other.

When I shoot an enemy in the original it feels like they're either going to be staggered, open to a kick or have their head explode. The whole series is just a love letter to hollywood thrillers, the story and atmosphere have always been the primary appeal. RE4 in particular has a lot of qtes and flashy melee moves in order to look more cinematic. It's always been about roleplaying as action hero moreso than handling complex gameplay mechanics.

OG Leon is hilarious and I quote him a lot. The RE storyline isn’t that good, nobody plays RE for the story. But it’s a lot better in 2 and Leon’s characterization is more consistent. He’s still a bit of a wise guy in 4R but going to that from 2R is way better than original 2 to original 4. 4R’s gameplay is more refined than the original’s though it’s a lot more realistic and grounded. Honestly the only thing the remake does 100% better than the original is Separate Ways.

I've sunk some hours into the remake for sure but the original is still better to me. I just think it feels better to play. I don't like the direction they took the player movement in 4R and Requiem. Going back and playing 2R and 3R, those games feel like the perfect compromise between realism in animations and responsiveness. No idea why they changed it the way they did. People say it's to account for the gameplay changes but I just think that's cope. Leon's kicking all kinds of ass in Requiem, they don't even pretend like playing as him should be challenging, there is no reason for him to control like you're going through a sewer section the entire game.
