Best friend characters in JRPGs tend to fall into one of two tropes.>comic relief doofus that is loyal for you the entire game>the guy who is much cooler and stronger but betrays you for power or pussy. His character breaks when he gets cucked by his love interest for the game's hero, or when the hero has obtain power that was destined for him instead.Persona does both.

Junpei and Yosuke are of the Magician Arcana, which characterizes impulsiveness and immaturity, but eventual growth. In Persona 5 Morgana takes this role instead, not Ryuji.Ryuji's Arcana is Chariot, characterized by self-control, martial prowess, and physical strength. Aigis and Chie are the same; Aigis acts as a war machine when she's first introduced, and Chie likes Chinese martial arts films and fights by kicking Shadows.

>>736600505>>736600884The thing is, if you take the arcanas as steps on a journey as you can take from the fool to the world, it makes sense in terms of narrative for you to meet the early arcanas earlier in the game, specially since the protagonist of persona games are either high schoolers or early university students, so they are still at the start of their journeys. If you want companions that represent later arcanas, you need older or already developed characters, which usually are older.

Ryuji just gets everyone's frustration despite almost dying and putting an arrogant cat in it's place and Yusuke's entire character is being angry at the murder of some bitch who hated his guts to begin with and only ever saw him as an encroaching villain due to Junes destroying family chain shops and stores in Inaba.
