So which one of those indie nu-city building games is actually good
>>
>>736607161
I actually liked islanders, pretty simple
>>
>>736607161
I have tried a bunch and didn't like any of them

They all become logistics and happiness simulators, hey better have that thing inside this arbitrary circle or you do not get +5 happiness

It is like Settlers 2 and SimCity (1989) invented all the mechanics and everyone has been perpetually stuck

a genre made obsolete by colony sims
>>
>>736607161
none, just play caesar 3
>>
well it certainly is not the new anno game
forgotten after only 2 weeks unfortunately

>just take SC4 with all its features included in base game, dlc and some more popular mods like nam, slap it on a modern engine so it doesn't crash every 5 minutes and render it with higer resolution
>every modern dev trying to make a city building game: uuh? huh?
>>
>>736608261
bro your cities skylines? unfortunately they took the paradoxpill
>>
>>736607161
To this day, Banished is still my personal GOAT.
It's maximum comfy.
>>
>>736608383
It was dun for a while. Then they added the launcher. Miss me with that shit.

>>
>>736607161
I haven't found one yet, but that's maybe because I didn't try.
I'm going to try Songs of Syx after I finish the tutorial in STS2.

yea you might wanna delete your post and try again

Farthest Frontier is good
>>
I like Farthest Frontier. It's basically Banished with more content added. Not overly complex like some other games, but not overly so.
>>
>>736609702
none offered but the ones you made up in your delusions

>colony sim
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>

Nothing could possibly out you as a nogames faggot tourist more than relating dwarf fortress to trannies, go back
>>
>>736608383
It was good but the art style of SC4 just cannot be beat. Full 3D is simply not the way when it comes to city builders. Yes, I will die on this hill.
>>
I put a little bit of time into Nova Roma both demo and the EA, it's what it set out to to, a decent game that has moderate depth and is in a niche but isn't a fagillion gigabytes like the ANNO series. I appreciate how quickly the 3 devs are working to adjust the gameplay with updates, how an actual early access game should be.
>>
>>736607161
I've not tried Nova Roma yet, but based on how decent, even if a bit too primitive, their previous game was, I believe in Nova Roma.

Also Timberborn is pretty good, if a bit too easy.
>>
>>736609962
yea the realistic 3d ones looks sterile. sc4 and impressions are still the peak visually. But he was talking about traffic management mod which is taken further because of 3d road painting

Is Workers & Resources a nu-city building game? I like it
Also Against the Storm
>>
>>736610151
>Is Workers & Resources a nu-city building game?
I'd say no: it's way too autistic. My interpretation of "nu-city building game" is that they're pretty laid back, to the point of almost lacking completely in challenge, and with a decent focus on "coziness".

I do, however, think Against the Storm counts, even if it's got SOME challenge, because it's so simple. I do not mean that last part in a bad way.
>>
Against the Storm but it’s a very different take on the genre.

Against The Storm
>>
>>736610313
>>736610313
>Against the Storm
Agreed
>but it’s a very different take on the genre.
Indeed, to the point that I'd barely call it a city builder. Or rather, I'd not only call it a city builder. It's more of a puzzler/roguelite/city builder imo.
>>
So Against the Storm is just a simple city builder with roguelite progression? I am one of those retards who likes my build magically getting stronger through no effort of my own with meta-progression upgrades
>>
>>736610540
It's a simple city builder where you start a level, build and clear the challenges on it whilst trying to handle the rogueliteness of it, and then once you've "cleared" that level you abandon that location and start a new stage. You never get to keep your cities (unless something has changed since I last played it). Also it's more "towns", or even "villages" than cities.
>>
Is Banished worth trying?
>>
>>736610731
Yeah but surely you get meta upgrades between towns that give you +5% population growth or whatever the fuck, right?
>>
>>736610742
It's worth trying yeah. What's there is enjoyable. Just keep in mind that it's an unfinished abandoned game.
>>
>>736610540
It’s a city builder where a ‘run’ is building a city that meets randomized goals like delivering a quota of certain goods, or making a population happy, before the time runs out. Each finished settlement is a steppingstone on the way to a final ‘boss’ that are increasingly difficult. The buildings you can use are randomized but the products overlap so you have to work with what you get. It’s essentially the first 45 minutes of a city builder and then you start a new one. It can be very intense when it comes to making quickly decisions right before the clock runs out.
>>
>>736607161
Against the Storm because it's not a city builder
It's just a terrible genre
>>
>>736610742
I wouldn't say so. It's interesting until you work out the balancing act, but it also feels unfinished and lacking.
>>
>>736610787
Oh yeah there was some meta progression. Can't exactly remember how it worked. Think it might've been something like how much stuff you can bring along for each new stage or something. Also you unlock new races (harpies have best voices), new buildings (which in a way makes it harder as it might be hard to get the ones you want with the randomisation elements) etc etc
>>
>>736610293
AoS is hard af if u actually push in the highest challenge mode

Workers and Resources.

this, city builders are sandboxes with nothing to do but build models

Which is why I personally prefer the old ones, Like Cleopatra and Caesar, where you played a campaign which different challenges per stage. I agree about what you're saying, but I understand that there are people who love these nu-city builders.

Which game best recreates that? Anno 1800 I guess. Any non-Anno games?
>>
>>736611152
Sounds like you're just describing the normal mode for all modern city builders. Tropico might be what you want, if the exotic atmosphere is part of your penchant
>>
>>736611152
I am enjoying Foundation quite a bit and its actually quite comfy
>>
>>736607161
none, when the zone gets flooded like this, it's for a reason
any asshat can make a citybuilder now and most of them are just gonna be one or two gimmicks different than any other

Which one's the best to jump into? I played one of them (maybe 4?) for a bit ages ago
>>736611321
My friend who played that for 10 hours said it's bad

I'm so starved I'm playing Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 here. It's not even a proper city builder!
>>
>>736611470
>Which one's the best to jump into? I played one of them (maybe 4?) for a bit ages ago
I've played 3 and 4 the most. Love them. I've not played the newer ones as I don't care for some of the changes they've made. Having said that, I've heard that 6 is pretty good. Just don't play 5.
>>
>>736611470
>My friend who played that for 10 hours said it's bad
Its fine for what it is, which is a comfy medieval city builder with a bit of millitary thrown in which reminds me of Caesar 3 era builders, but its different enough from it, for example fortifications impact density of a house, but tier level of a house depends on attraction levels.
Also where workers live also impacts efficiency of the production since he will take longer to get to work or won't find home at all and be homeless.

Art style is also good.

Meta-progression is partially unlocking whole new systems to interact with, and extending your pool of bonuses to choose from at the start of the game. There are also some accumulating +2% bonuses but I seriously doubt anyone actually notices them.

That said, for a first attempt at a roguelike city builder the game is surprisingly well designed. The mechanic of forest hostility vs queen's impatience makes for really dynamic games, even though the game has literally no combat.

What this guy says. I play games to escape my own unhappiness and avoid managing other people's emotions. Give me a game where I can plop houses down, watch cozy shit happen and edit the map to surround all opponents with uncrossable mountains while I strip all natural resources from the area.
Oh wait, there is such a game already.
>>
>>736612758
>popular mods like nam
OH NO HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS
>>
Whichever one doesn't have low poly aka reddit graphics
>>
game devs with no passion should just make city builders as their fans will slurp it up no matter how bad the game is
