Im not an artist and artists have managed to convince gamers that the only thing that matters in games is the art and that the game is secondary to that. Not much point making a game if an artist with a claudecode account can use that to find success but if I dare use generative AI to help make any of the art then I will be attacked endlessly by the artist mafia.

Finally someone gets it. It's just fucking work after a point and a very low chance of payoff to boot. That's why only shameless autists make it, and why solo devs are so insufferable. They are blind to their own flaws that helps them stay motivated, and are not a little arrogant and stupid at business. Only luck carries the few to stardom.

But if you are a beginner hobbyist it could be fun.

if I bothered to make a game it'd be something relatively easy, using something like gb studio or rpg maker or maybe renpy if I had good enough ideas for a mystery vn. and I don't know, there are already a ton of games made with those. sure I have ideas, but they're not necessarily good ideas or ideas that I'd be able to execute

My son. I am a stay at home dad to a 4 year old. I have been with him everyday since he spawned on this bitch of an earth. The missus works from home as a CPA so we have solid income and she's determined I don't work so I can teach our son. I am fine with all of that, but I am with him from sunrise to sunset, through everything. I do not have days off. I do not have time to split my attention. Even posting like this is rare but he's eating so whatever. But despite all efforts to try and game dev. I can't ignore my son. God am I fucking exhausted.
>>
>>736610723
Why does this guy look AI generated?
>>
>>736610723
Programming good enemy AI is hard.
Juggling the rest of the aspects of game development and having to fill so many roles as a solo developer makes it nigh impossible.
If i can't get close to AA quality then i don't want to release it to the market.
Solo deving is likely impossible for my line of game and its observable by how poorly skilled other indie developers are in this field too. I might be the only one who wants to make my sort of game. But other indie devs were likely more realistic about their talentless abilities and instead opted for making shitty roguelites. No i will not provide any detailed answer other than this.

the camera shutter was set to a slow speed to get a clear image of the CRT displays, and to compensate for low light.
shutter speed was likely at around 1/30, the monitors would strobe twice while the photo was taken, giving him the appearance of having two mouths.

Learn how to write and do maths, hire two people that will be "team creative (music, art etc)" and "team tech (programming, testing)" and get a "team modeller (animator/modeller)"; single guy for each job and you can make your own game and outsource the required workflow however you want from there. Literally how good things are made now before two people could make a kino game if it were just pixel graphics with arts and music, scripting and programming splits. (X-Com is an epic example.)

wrong, its actually music. music is the most important. its a major critical component in a game's success. your game could literally steal/copy nes sprites but as long as the soundtrack is "fire", it'll do numbers.

i can't program for shit. i like making music, drawing, and animating. those are really fun. but programming tends to frustrate me most of the time, and when it doesn't it's pretty simple stuff or just me taking pieces of code from a video tutorial or forum. the latter of which i tend to not like to do, but if i truly don't have a clue on what to code then i'll use them.

a part of me thinks that if i wanted to improve my coding skills, i should just simply scope down and do a smaller project. the reason for frustration is usually me having big expectations for myself and the game. if it's something i don't get any sort of pressure from, i found that solving coding problems can actually be quite fun.

My games:
>1 RPG Maker 95 game
>2 RPG Maker 2000 games
>1 RPG Maker 2003 game
>2 RPG Maker VX games
>3 Ren'py dating sims
>1 Ren'py visual novel

I made 10 games in my life. The Ren'py games made me money because I offered porn in them. I estimate I made about $150,000 from them, but that was over the course of 10 fucking years, so it’s not like it’s a lot of money.

I thought about it. But using AI to code is still very expensive. I will have to wait until local stuff gets better maybe. Then it becomes affordable.

Also: The worst part (art / asset generation) really sucked when I looked into it. The art-style was really terrible and modern (makes sense based on training data). I especially need this part to become cheap (ideally local).

The proportions are usually wrong, or stuff doesn't fit together quite right.
My characters feel, "lumpy," where they should be smooth,
and as for buildings, it's like there's no room for the stairs.
My texture works leaves much to be desired.

my only experience making games is creating maps in warcraft 3 map editor, plazma burst 2 and super mario flash
but you need so much shit to make games. i think you can use AI to make art, but vibe coding isnt there yet, so without any programming experience there is no way i can make one

Money? Not nearly enough.
Talent to be a one man studio? Negative.
Mental illness that prevents me from (at the very least with any amount of ease) focusing on learning an engine and how to code? Check.
So it goes. Maybe one day that will change, but it isn't today. Not yet.

I'm too old (28) to learn anything and pick up habits and my life in general is shitty enough to add bugs coding drawing shit on top of that

Honestly I suffer the same especially when it comes to building scale, where I think a room looks nice it's completely out of what and doesn't fit at all.. whether it be furniture, doors, windows etc. Have you thought about checking out some courses or architecture books to see if that could help?
as with texture I always hear blender isn't the best for it and that people always recommend substance painter but juggling different programs sounds like a headache

I've done some tiny projects just to see what making a game is like, but they're nothing worth releasing for sale. Even if I did sit down to make something I'd consider good enough to sell there's a 99% chance I'll make literal cents/hour worked. As a new indie dev these days the only chance you have of succeeding is by being a trend chasing faggot and praying you get some traction through TikTok or some Twitch streamer.

I started out as a very shitty hobbyist python programmer a couple years back. I decided that I wanted to make a 3D game from scratch only using C and Vulkan. It was a mountain of headache to both learn a new language and using Vulkan of all things at the same time, but I did it through by taking it one step at a time. After months of dealing with bullshit, I got the skeleton of an engine, and I'm working on figuring out collisions.
I know for a fact that I'm low IQ, so if I can do it, most of you can. It's very rewarding and satisfying to create something. All it takes is the dedication to sticking through tutorial hell, then dealing with a fuckton of trial and error.
Believe in yourselves, anons. WAGMI

I have no talents above programming.
Legit, I don't even have *ideas*

I have courses on buildings and architecture, but I bounce between them, because I find them difficult, or one inspires me to try something in the other.
I couldn't say. I don't have substance painter, I just mark stuff out in Blender using the vertex shader, and then refine that in Krita.

Procrastination mainly. I need to get back to work.

I was on the path to do this, with real education and some small programmer groups, back in 2015, but gave up when Gender quotas became official, and could see it affect video games on a AAA level. If it isn't the industry I fell in love with, I don't want to join it.

even if you are somehow competent with all the required skills yourself the amount of work even simple games require is enough to filter most people

I do like to think about the creative and mechanical aspects of the game (attributes, equipment, enemies, status effects, etc), but I can't program at all if not through extremely simple, drag-and-drop-blocks game engines like Stencyl, but that can hardly be called programming.

He doesn't look AI generated, you just made that up in your head.

A better question is why do you WISH he was AI generated? kys.

I'm a total brainlet when it comes to programming.

Just make an offbrand indie version of an old game and add some shitty modern gimmick like procedural generation, complicated movement, or parrying. Or make an extremely small 20-30 minute itch.io-slop game to start with.

>What's stopping you from making your own game?
My "good ideas" are too vague and I wouldn't actually know how to flesh them out in a way that makes a game fun.

Being honest, I'm not a fan of those gimmicks, and I couldn't bring myself to make something that was intentionally slop.
Guess I'll just try working on my skillset and brainstorming to see if I can come up with a concept for a half-hour game.

I can't figure out any way to create art assets that isn't either impossible to learn or pure suffering.

Ultimately: Bad behaviors that have nothing to do with game development, like poor nutrition, being 'politically informed', and general hedonism killed all my motivation to make things. Stopping bad behaviors is x4 more effective then 'positive action' and it can be universally applied.
This lead me to another conclusion that it's very bad to force yourself to do things. I was convinced for a year all I had to do was force myself to work on the game every day, which failed because I just saw it as a chore and did token changes so I could get back to bad behaviors. Getting 'motivated' in the moment doesn't happen, 'discipline' is long-term abstinence and your willingness to work flows from that.
Later I discovered that when you're healthier, these sort of feelings are your unconscious and spiritual sense realizing somethings wrong about your approach that your rational mind can't express. For example, I would eventually discover that I can't stand working in a game engine for longer then a month which lead me to starting more "from scratch" on a framework and that particular feeling of 'dread' has gone away.

Two warnings:
There's a difference between NOT doing something you want to do(smoke crack, eat badly, porn, and so on) and NOT doing something you don't want to do.
Second: There's a difference between not wanting to do something and initial reluctance due to fear(attachment to collective norms, 'rational' preconceptions, trauma, phobias, etc.) fear goes away if it's unfounded, spiritual warnings will persist and escalate.

Vulkan's a lot of fun. There's all these cool ways unique to do things that you just don't have when you're using some bubble wrapped PBR and you have to learn the whole stack just to figure out where you need to plug your shit in.

I did selection and box selection in my permanently engine dev RTS game by drawing entity ids to a separate buffer in the vertex stage. Makes it super accurate, simple, and fast. There's probably faster ways to do it on the CPU but all the data's already right there on the screen so no extra rubbish to calculate an approximate ray intersection and get it more or less close enough.

the most fatal weakness of a gamedev: I can't properly design gameplay.
