dmc3 literally has an in-game video of the devs doing cool combos you can unlock, playing for S ranks is just another way to enjoy the game but both are intended. you need to do moderately cool things to get S ranks anyway because of the orb score (more orbs at higher style rank) on top of literally having a style requirement. The more i explore the adjacent games to the genre, the more i come to believe that the key characteristic of CAGs (although i like Hack n Slash better), is that they are closer to "arcade" (for the lack of a better a word) than the general adventures. This obviously includes mission screens, but also think there's the "pick and play" kind of nature, mostly thanks to a heavy focus on a mission style structure of levels, like how there's a clear beginning and end of chapters in NG or DMC missions. Lastly, the true factor is honestly that is easier to tell simply by noticing if it's not like souls stuff. Yes, combo faggotry is usually the best sign when something is not like souls.

The action segments in Frontiers sucked. The cyberspace stages were pretty fun but the combat was dull and uninspired. The bosses were neat set pieces, especially Dragon which backfired when they did the update and forced the boss rush because that entire fight was waiting until you could do a parry.
