i dont know. FF7 has a lot of cool pre rendered backgrounds and they still have a lot of appeal. and 8 and 9 look pretty cool in their own way. i would take the aesthetics of 7, 8 and 9 over 4, 5 and 6 easily.

VII-IX all had beautiful backgrounds though. Plus they had much more variety in their environments. In IV-VI every town looked nearly identical.

That's even worse. Opening cutscenes are designed to wow and hook the player within the first 5 minutes so they tend to be way more high effort than everything else.

Using another FF as an example, FFX's opening cutscene has way more going on than almost every other cutscene in the game. Like we literally don't even see a frontal fullbody shot of Lulu because of belts, but the first cutscene has water physics, physical contact, a giant crowd of people running, and buildings getting warped by gravity.

FF7 literally does not look like that, only the incompetent PC port does. In the PS1 version, the shading on the 3D models is much better so that they mesh with the backgrounds, and the backgrounds are also the same resolution as the 3D models. The face textures are better as well.

Basically you need to use this as the FF6 screenshot for a fair comparison.

I don't agree. FF7's world models look pretty primitive by today's standards, but the character sprite art from the older games definitely wasn't top of the line sprite art. I'd say they're at the very least comparable, and that doesn't take into account the fact that 3d graphics were novel at the time. FF7 also has significantly more detailed models for battles and some really good looking static backgrounds.

Then it just gave up and gave us the most simplistic, borderline cutscene-tier "combat" encounters that are FF7, with the illusion of choice/customization via the goofy ass Materia system.

I played on original hardware 3 years ago, and even though I agree that it looks much better than the PC port, the character models and enemy designs are all pretty ugly and janky. The prerendered background are nice though.
