I've been using the same 2 controllers since the ps5 came out and my rubber is worn down a ton but it's still in good shape. The batteries on the other hand, well I can't use the controllers without using a USB and I'm too cheap of a bastard to get new batteries. Used to rotate them while playing long sessions when the batteries died but now after so many thousands of hours playing the batteries don't even last like an hour after fully charging.

For everyone saying 'wash your hands', it's actually probably the opposite. Whatever protective barrier the material had when it was new is probably broken down through normal use, but the oils on your fingers 'lubricate' and 'rehydrate' the material, so it's not a problem if you keep using the controller. When you stop, it dries out like in the pic.

This happened to my PS2 and PS3 controllers. Initially I thought it was gamer evolved gamer gunk, but eventually it stopped happening on the left stick, but still happened on the right stick. The right stick still has some bounce to it if I try pressing the padding, but the left one is completely hard. I think there's some more liquid stuff in the core of the padding to give it some bounce, which over time might start seeping through.
