I know that this is like the millionth post like this here but I do want to love this game, and I do. The problem like so many others who are new to fighting games, is that I feel like I'm not improving/really bad at the game. I've sunk around 50hrs into the game, 35 of those in online matches and the best rank I've been able to achieve was Iron 3. I know that it takes a very long time to "get good" at fighting games, but this feels like a bit too long right? I've done the 'Tutorial' (it was about as useful as the keybinding menu) I've played through Arcade with Bridget (my main) on every difficulty except for the Ky fight where he cheats. I felt some amount of improvement for the first dozen hours or so, but now its feels like I'm just stagnating. At this point the combo learn mode is becoming more tempting. I have the feeling that just learning combos isn't going to do much for helping my skill level though. Any tips or pointers so I can get back to enjoying the game?

Most options that feel oppressive are "fake" and are usually done to you because you are being set up into a certain situation. Which leads to>don't play to your opponent's strengths. If the opponent is a zoner, be patient and then use those small opportunities to rush at them. If they are a grappler, don't get near them. Even at a character's strongest, there are ways to avoid them but it is strategically not sound to put yourself there in the first place>use FD. Meter management is important but not using your resources is worse. You would think using FD being a small meter drain and just slightly pushing back the opponent is not that big of a deal but all characters mixup and pressure get weaker the farther away they are, EVERYONE. All characters have to make a conscience choice to make up the distance difference in some way, leading holes into their offense>mash and jump out. As a beginner, you would think the definitive answer to overheads is to block high. Blocking high is hard. However, most overheads are slow and thus can be interrupted by a quick normal or jumped out or mashed out. The important thing here is that while these options do have weaknesses, you still must use them so that you can see how your opponent reacts and changes to your response, then you change in return. >Alternatively, if you keep winning with a certain tactic, keep doing it. There is no weakness to something if the opponent doesn't actually use the correct method. Say you use Sol and they block your bandit bringer. You are still +. The correct answer is to air throw it or AA, but because they blocked it you can still keep going.>neutral is incredibly important and can start and end fast. Its important because whoever wins in the exchange gets to run their offense. Just by that alone someone can win a match

What's important is to analyze and identify why you're losing, check replays when necessary and hit the training mode to figure things out. If even after thinking about your match and reviewing the replay you still do not have any idea why you lost, then you may need someone better to give you tips on what you need to focus on. Eventually I just moved on to SF6 and Tekken. The friend I am talking about actually did make it to celestial but with the recent patches he nearly made it to Vanquisher and then got mogged and gave up on the game. I am currently grinding through silver, started playing the game again for the first time in about 4 years.

You could run into players that only know to autopilot their flowcharts or straight up got lucky, or high level tournament players and everything in between, so for a large number of players getting into celestial was a question of getting lucky with your opponents or straight up picking and choosing who to fight. Ranked is a much better system since it generally puts players against others of similar skill level.
