The game's support system (letting you borrow one character from another player before each battle) is going to be very useful, to be specific look out for a high level Berserker Heracles with the Castle of Snow CE (lets him revive several times per battle for free) which will carry you through pretty much all of Part 1 singlehandedly, though you may want to keep a guide open during Camelot and Babylonia because some of the boss gimmicks can cripple you if you don't see them coming, for example sometimes a boss will just open with an NP with Ignore Invincible that will wipe your frontline for story reasons. Part 2 is significantly harder and will have several walls, most notably in 5-2 and 7. You may have to rely significantly on command spells and Leyline Stones (given out frequently to help people through the story).

You'll have to engage in the gacha to some extent, but you'll never need to pay real money. The game will throw quartz at you as a new player, so just use it on whatever the current banner unit is who is probably going to be pretty good (never, ever roll the Story banner) and build a team around them. I don't remember if they still give you a free 5* ticket, but if they do then pick El-Melloi II who is a universal support that's still good to this day despite being a launch character.

I should also warn you that a not insignificant amount of the story is tied to limited time events since the entire game was released in real time, some of which you can still play within the game and some of which are gone forever. You'd better look up a recommended play order and watch stuff on Youtube if you can't get them in the Main Interlude shop. For an early Part 1 example, chapter 4 foreshadows the KnK crossover event, which leads into the Dantes Prison Tower event which introduces Dantes and Nightingale, one of which is a recurring character throughout the rest of the game and one of which is a main character in chapter 5.

The real question is; should you? And my answer is "probably not". There are definitely some good moments and an excellent soundtrack but there are a lot of "buts" to throw out first. The early game (often agreed to be the first three chapters of Part 1, some argue everything before chapter 6) is genuinely bad. Not just in terms of gameplay (Orleans will drive you mad with random waves of wyverns interrupting dialogue for the thirtieth time) but in terms of story, being full of plot holes and characters who only show up on screen to advertise their presence in the gacha. It's mobileslop in the worst way. It does improve quite suddenly in Camelot but just be aware of the Great Filter. The other problem is it's just incredibly fucking long, especially so with all the events and side material you need to consume (Draco's event will need you to look up a fan translation of FGO Arcade's story for context, for example). You're looking at multiple hundreds of hours of time invested that could be much more profitably spent reading half a dozen excellent VNs that can fit more than two lines of text on a screen. Personally, I played the game for seven years (from launch day up until dropping the game somewhere around summer 2024) and can't really recommend it. Again there are some great moments but on the whole, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

I played Fate Stay Night for the first time recently and thought I'd give FGO a try, I've played a bunch of gacha games so I don't particularly mind the format.
Good GOD is this the worst game I've ever played, it has a pity of 330 doubled with atrocious rates, so it's not even like Blue Archive where you get a bunch of decent spooks along the way, it's just the worst of both worlds, 99% of the time the gacha just fucks you.
Also the client itself is just dogshit and ancient and you have problems like being unable to download game data while your phone screen is off for some retarded reason.
There's no auto battle system, I tried farming a bit of this current crossover event but you need to manually use all your skills and pick attack in the exact same battles over and over and over again, it's incredibly tedious.
Maybe the story gets good later on? Right now it's kind of meh and not presented in a particularly exciting way.
I was trying to understand why it was so popular for so long but fuck me, it's just a genuinely terrible game even by gacha standards, you'd think they'd have done something to try and compete with modern offerings but nope.
I feel like there'd be a decent market for people with lower powered or weaker phones too who just want a game with simpler graphics, but fuck this, what the fuck even is this?

nta but as someone who only picked up the game last november because I was curious about the fairy lostbelt ORT is actually pretty damn easy as a new players since by the time you get there you should have more than enough resources to level your shitters for the raid boss section since midway through they get a huge buff to their base stats which means even level ones can scratch him. Generally speaking, there's two options for gacha pity these days.
Either you go for something like BA where the pull rates are high, but the odds to get the banner pull are low, so you dump your 200 spins and get a bunch out of it and eventually what you want.
Or you do the Genshin thing where rates are very low, but pity is also low, and pity will guarantee the banner character with at the very most, one failure.
FGO has extremely low pull rates plus extremely high pity, it's doing absolutely nothing for the player whatsoever.

Louhi and Ciel are the standouts. The former is one of the best multicore DPS around even today and the latter is mostly valuable because you can pop her skill and then plug her out to give anyone a full set of cards. Otherwise it's honestly a pretty skippable year. Yui Shosetsu was also pretty standout for a 4* support but you already missed her.
