Bungie was already working on Marathon when Snoy bought them, too. Maybe it was a different time since Destiny wasn't dead yet.

the game itself was 200 million, and the studio was also 200 million. so in total, 400 million for the whole thing.

common mistake.
Firewalk got 200million for seed money of starting a studio and making a game. So the original 200 million includes office space, equipment, hiring bonuses, concepting, PoC'ing, etc...
They ran out of money and pitched it to Sony.
Sony then gives them 200 million to finish up whatever slop they had (Concord)

Skull and Bones cost $200m, but that could just be what Ubisoft put in and it was several hundred million more of money from Singapore's government.

Concord still holds the crown for the most expensive single bomb in all of media, with some big movie (John Carter or Jupiter Ascending, maybe) in the #2 spot.

The foundational idea of selling the company, is that some sucker entity value the brand so much that they would A)pay the founders to not work
B)pay the remainder to keep fuck around headless, free to leave now that existential financial responsibility is not practiced.
The right thing is to stay clear of the falling building until the rubble is settled and pick through the liquidation rubbish. A large company with enough sucker purchases will be dragged down with them too.

Yeah. I remember the Singaporean government officially warned Ubisoft because development was taking too long. They said, "Either release the game or face a lawsuit and pay for all the damages."
This sent Ubisoft's executives into a panic, forcing them to cobble together a bunch of junk into a game.
It wasn't fun at all.
An indie pirate game was released today, and it looks way better than Ubisoft's trash.

There's a demo for it. Its not mindbreakingly good but its solid. Reasonable combat and a simple progression system (you clear an island, move onto the next, clear that, get upgrades/unlocks/rinse and repeat) with base building and ship combat/boarding. But its the fact that such a simple game is all people wanted and Ubisoft can't even do that which is amazing.

I believe this is the result of bureaucracy.
Ubisoft is too bloated; every creative idea has to be reviewed by dozens of senior executives who don’t even play games.
They don’t play games at all, yet they love to critique every single piece of content.
This has caused development to slow down drastically, and a lot of great content has been cut.
I remember the game originally had a Cthulhu DLC.
In the end, the game was scrapped and rebuilt from scratch, and the Cthulhu content was gone.

Very few companies these days have a sane upper management set up and for years they coasted on gamers just buying anything and raising prices but they are all tapped out of that shit and games are shit now. Chinese companies also stopped investing probably realizing they can flat out own many of these companies if they just wait. The damage Jim Ryan did to the video game industry is perhaps the biggest act of industrial sabotage in human history.

He was the one who destroyed Snoy as a console because he hated Japanese games despite Playstation being a Japanese game device.

He was the one who demanded a baker's dozen extraction shooters with character design SO interchangeable that nobody even knows which game they came from. Also each one of them cost hundreds of millions (99% of the budget is being embezzled though no doubt)

As for Jim Ryan? He retired, rode off in to the sunset in his convertible, fat sacks full of money beside him, laughing at the sychophant ass-licker Herman Hulst who caught the blame for Jim's management decisions.

It truly is wild to see. Unironically where did all that money went to? It has at the moment 3, I want to say 4 maps and they are not like huge maps either. A xbox 360 game called Frontlines had maps to put Battefield to shame while Marathon maps are about the size of a Bf4 map more or less.

I mean there is publicity costs of which I have seen no ads IRL like for games like GTAV or Elden Ring.
There is 4K, and devs have stated 4K is a massive bloat. At this point if making a game 4K DOUBLES your game budget to appeal to like 5% of the playerbase, maybe it is not worth chasing, not to mention 4K is still a meme since 4K displays and GPUS cannot simultaneously max out a modern game and play on 4K without DLSS which is just smart upscaling, and since that exist maybe just stop making games for 4K displays?
As for enemies, the AI is braindead like in COD. Doom Eternal still got the best and most advanced enemy scripting in videogames, still well beyond From Soft, therefore it is a MP centric game which cuts on the need for smart enemies.
So again, why did this piece of shit cost more to make than Tf2? Which released with more maps and more game modes since the game is just geometry, boundaries and spawn points. Anyone should be able to recreate Marathon on UE and Unity with ease.
>Muh Lego Nerf artstyle
They did not even PAY the artists either.

What type of scam is Bungie running or is AWS bullshit that fucking expensive? At which point just fucking kill that shit and allow people to run their own servers. I read that AWS is what killed Highguard or Highground, or whatever that DOA game was called.

Pretty sure they get paid for exactly that. Just pretend to have fun since their whole schtick is to be kawaii uguu and react.
But that is not the point, what I am putting into question is to whether there is any conversion coming in from streaming since people who watch games are clearly NOT playing them and streamers NEVER interact with their audience in game, at most some get a chance if they donate enough money and have passed through a filter.

I bought it last week and I've been enjoying it, but it sucks that this game isn't doing too well. I really don't want it to die because I think it has potential to grow into something even more awesome down the line.

The progression loss is a real issue that I think is driving away players. To make a similar comparison there's Elden Ring, but even though that game was hard death didn't come with as much progression loss. I know this is part of the design for extraction shooters, but I think if they find a way to balance the risk for newer or more casual players while still allowing advanced players to have a challenging game they would be doing a lot better.
Maybe they could do this by having a training/campaign mode where players can play against AI-bots. The AI in this game is already pretty good and sometimes on par with players. So you could have AI mode for lower level or casual players to grind for gear. But make it so that the gear in this mode is below blue. And Cryo Archive would not be available in this mode. The reason I suggest this over something like adding more free kits is because part of the frustration people have is the feeling of losing. By having a mode where they can attain gear and feel like they're winning something you're using positive reinforcement to retain their interest in the game while also teaching them how to play.

The other issue is the art style. Personally I don't mind it, some stuff works and some stuff doesn't. But the stuff that is good makes it worthwhile for me. I wish the colors were a tad bit more orderly. Maybe something like ghost in the Shell SAC or Mirrors Edge.

I hope it passes as intended, funny enough because of RSS but there is a chance is only applicable to games that come out later or knowing the EU, this will somehow result in an extra tax because the EU will have to make a special commission to tell you which games may shut down later and have to put a sticker on it reminding you they will go offline someday only for Ubisoft and Activision to just make you read the TOS and EULA at a snail pace.

Lots of us hate Bungie but I honestly can't blame them for the game failing. Studios that millions of people despise regularly release successful games. The truth is Marathon is a pretty bad game in an oversaturated genre. It has nothing worth seeing, it's just $40 destiny, and that's why it failed.

Love the disingenuous attempt at trying to portray game devs as just one homogeneous blob. You see it on twitter all the time.
Thats what got us into this shit position in the first place. Industry goons use it to hide their mediocrity behind actual good devs. CEOs use it to treat every dev as an interchangeable cogwheel to suppress wages and fire the old guard.

>The truth is Marathon is a pretty bad game in an oversaturated genre.
$40 for 4 maps and a single game mode is criminal, especially when the mode in question is ass and came after another blunder and Bungie was very upfront with the monetization mode.
Helldivers 2 released with more content despite being just a PVE game but it was a stress free game. The artstyle was amicable and speak to people starved for a good Halo type game. It attracted WH40K and Starship Troopers fans.

Bungie should have made a basic single player game since, as removed as it is from the source material, it could still be a System Shock clone but Sony wanted a GaaS game in an environment where this model is capitulating or strictly mobile. Hell, Destiny mobile is causing Bungie to seethe because China did a better job than them.
And here is the joke, this all happened because some fucking retard at Sony thought buying Bungie would be a form of revenge against MS for buying up A/B because Sony thought buying Bungie included the rights to Halo, something a child could have googled.
>>
>>736717276

Clones and trend-chasing has always been a thing in the vidya industry, but you used to be able to crank out a decent clone within a year or two. Now these projects have gotten so large and lengthy that by the time they get the game out the trend is played out and nobody cares.
Then the people who ARE still interested in the genre have years of time and money invested in Fortnite/etc. that makes them very hesitant to leave it.

The CPU enemies are braindead in the exact same way Dark Souls enemies are braindead.

If you engage them on straight up level that the developer expects you they can provide a decent challenge. The second you put any thought into it everything breaks. Like holding a chokepoint and having them all stream in and you can kill them without even moving the mouse. (Opening pinwheel/secured resourse)

The bosses in Overflow and Dorms are also insanely easy to cheese. Overflow is just standing outside the base and engage from range at multiple points. Dorms boss is hiding in a vent and shooting it while it shoots the wall above you. Or if you are running a trio and have an assassin, pop smoke and all 3 rush it with melee. It'll be stun locked and die before ever retaliating.

All this talk and gravedancing on Bungie is making me look back at the history and think...
Apparently that MATTER game WASN'T Marathon, and Luke Smith and another guy were working on 3rd person game coded Payback...
Also some other incubation title might have been sent to another sony studio o algo

Marathon started work around 18/19 and was headed by chris barret, which was fired for... dubious conduct... allegedly. I really REALLY want to know how substantiated that is, because Chris's description of his ideas for Marathon sound FAR more appealing and cool than the slop we got: Designed as a persistent server experience, a play space that would be repopulated by players and loot over time, events happening, players coming and going, full immersion, inspired by Age of Camelot in design.
It sounds like an ambitiously based idea that could have been awesome- Mixing Destiny PvE with PvP, with more room for baked-in story potential if the game was more focused on exploration. Imagine exploring the whole marathon ship as a massive MASSIVE level, where you drop into different areas and explore, and leave, while other players also come and go, instead of the round based raid format on relatively small maps (even cryo comparatively). Now THAT could be really fucking cool- but no, we got 4 disconnected maps and PvP sweating (the persistent vers. could have had sweaty pvp too, it would still be more interesting).

So they fired the guy who was thinking up that idea (chris), and we get the valorant guy and the current game. All in all? no hook, very poopy.
So you're left with a Bungie with NOTHING. No incubation projects to pan out, only Destiny and Marathon, and a mad Sony breathing down their neck... Basically all they could do now is Destiny 3... but that's not new or exciting anyway (maybe turn it into the old-numarathon?)

Like wtf? why didn't they make the cool vers. of mara? why all the dead ideas? Was Chris's firing legit?Does Jason Jones not give a fuck?
>>
>>736719321
How'd you get to level 100 so fast? I'm still level 46, do you only play trios?

I don't know why people still care about big studios like Bungie, Blizzard, etc. just because they made a good game 20+ years ago.
All of the people who made those good games are long gone, and even if a few founders remain they are now in executive positions that don't actually work on the game in any meaningful way.
>>
>>736719465
>All of the people who made those good games are long gone
Not really, there was a tweet by a Bungie dev a month ago replying to a guy saying the same thing with a list of names from the old guard working on the game. There is a lot of Halo designers on-board Marathon currently.
This narrative feels good to people because it validates their feelings of nostalgia as something real.

There are multiple ways into pinwheel without giving access to everyone else.

Finding the 4 boxes around Destroyed wing, or the conveyance request and opening the elevator into Drone wing. Both of these skip the map wide notification that pinwheel is open.

Kill shit and focus on completing tasks is the best advice I can give. The other part is be good at FPS games and generally win the majority of your fights.

Loot does not matter, especially on the first two maps. Don't get bogged down wasting time fighting over blues and greens on perimeter like homeless people fighting over a coin in the street.

I should add that I heard there were 3 other incubations besides matter (not including marathon)
one was the one sent to bungie and maybe 2 others. Maybe one of them was Payback.
After Bungie cancelled Payback, Luke Smith and the other dude who was working on it with him (forgot name) left Bungie, having been with bungie during Halo.
Like genuinely I looked it up and Jason Jones, Co-founded the company, stupid faggot that he is, involved ofc in marty and staten being booted, killing D1 and Destiny's foundation imo, but still a co-founder... IS STILL THERE

Like idk if I co-founded a company, and eventually made it one of the most respected game developers in the West and in general I would at least try to save the legacy. But what am I saying? for many reasons he's a faggot, I just find it appalling the depths they'll fall to at this point.

I really want to know what the fuck happened to all these incubation projects. It's crazy that at one point I aspired to work at bungie in my youth. Personally, after Destiny 1 faceplanted and dissapointed me I couldn't go back.

>>736715991
DLC was still paid, you had to buy it. The only reason why Unity's DLC was free was because it was their buggiest game ever released on top of having horrific design decisions like needing to pay for a mobile app to get access to classic AC robes. People were raking them over the coals. Skull & Bones and Star Wars Outlaws were just wet farts by comparison. AC Shadows is like the only thing to even come close to the same controversy and even that was primarily due to Yasuke, not the game itself. The game itself actually improved a lot of the mechanics of the series, it's just that they went full retard making Yasuke playable.

unrelated, but it would surprise me if the same kind of shit happened to Chris Barret at bungie given how they've had to pay settlements for wrongful firings in the past, and I've never heard more about it beyond alleged misconduct.
picrel was a recent happening with Ex-bungie dev at 343/Halost who dealt with this over there; again, unrelated to bungie itself, but I could see Bungie doing something similar if they didn't like Barret or wanted to pivot Marathon's development to chase trends or different design.

Your premise itself is flawed. If everybody thinks a game is shit but see your favorite vtuber pretend to like it for a paycheck you're not going to buy it. The story is cool, but only bc it was cool 30 years ago. The art is largely a departure (for better and worse), It's carried on the back of its forefathers with no self-justification for existing.
>>736719321
Are these unique bosses even really.. unique? are they just other variants of UESC or do they actually have unique AI and attacks? some combo of the two? The problem with them is that they are essentially the Boss version of various other enemy types and early on they are extremely easy to confuse for regular bots as they have near identical silhouettes to their much weaker variants. They do have unique mechanics and attacks which you only really see if you fight them straight up.

Problem is, doing so creates noise which draws other players in; so your incentivised to cheese them and kill them as fast as possible.
Melee rushing under smoke solves(or solved I haven't played in weeks) that and essentially skips all the mechanics.

The Barrett version was apparently not fun to play according to the Tarkov streamers they brought in to play the early verson.
It had the oxygen mechanic as your match timer, with your base oxygen tank being around 5-7 minutes (and being able to find better ones off of players or in the level that could bring that number up to 10-15 min, with the chance of finding a refill being rare)
You also had a damage system that was described as "Tarkov-lite", where getting hit in certain areas of the body would give you debuffs and disabilities you had to remedy with consumables.
There was also more attempts at making traversal "more interesting"
With the primary example being trudging through waist-high water going a lot faster if you brought in the right consumable.
However, it also suffered from unchecked scope-creep on the production side that seemed to be leading it down the D1 vanilla launch path till Ziegler took over.
And Ziegler's whole push was focused on refining the core gameplay, since that was apparently not coming together under Barrett's direction due to how spread everyone was on artifacts, live-event ideas, more involved scavenger hunts and map mechanics, world's first events, etc.
The whole "hero shooter" pivot was something that happened while Barrett was still involved on the project as an "Executive Creative Director".
And that whole pivot was something that the Barrett cut was building towards with them having to introduce classes since fully-customized runners just weren't apparently fun to play or play against.
(my theory is that it resulted in too many people funneling towards one build style and custom runners not being as readable as the current Runners we have)
I think Barrett's ideas were an interesting pitch on paper, but execution was apparently lackluster.
And Jason Jones has apparently been playing this version of Marathon often with Ziegler through development

I doubt it, F2P games have crazy cheating problems. The game would be worse off a month on and not even making money back on the box price. Just a damned if you don't damned if you don't situation, maybe there isn't actually a big enough audience to support a hyper aggressive AAA extraction game regardless of how they approach it.

The PvE is definitely the limiting factor for nuMarathon rn.
Too many people saying it needs a single-player campaign when what they have with the UESC bots rn just cant carry that kind of experience.
In addition to not having more dangerous PvE enemies that dynamically change the map flow due to how challenging they are, or enemy in-fighting ala the classic Marathon trilogy (especially with how dominant a strat it was to Berserk an enemy for TC clears).
Not having the Pfhor at launch is whats really hurting the game imo.

Definitely not, especially with how "extraction game illiterate" most of the gaming population is today.
Its still way too early to bet big on an extraction shooter when the genre is basically where demon's souls and H1Z1 BR mode were back in the day imo.
Need some goodies/easy modes to ease people into it at this point, otherwise you end up like ARC where you just ignore elements of the genre to make a Helldivers-lite

Under the Barrett vision, it was always planned to be an "Extraction Shooter".
But the pitch was more DAOC Realm vs Realm mode except it was session-based with persistent zones.
Its just that the scale and scope of what was planned/promised in his version was reduced for the sake of shipping the game.
(even the comic-book cel-shaded artstyle from the closed alpha that people complained about were remnants from his vision of Marathon)
Supposedly a lot of dev cycle was having constant reboots on the game while they built up tiger engine for it.
So anything single-player wasnt in the cards from the start, and it'll take a while to add since the game we have now is still missing a bunch of that big-scope content that they seem to be working on adding to the game now.

>>
>>736728561
You misunderstand. My goal is no censorship out right. What creates these sorts of threads is the industry having the means to lie and manipulate their failings. These threads are born from that. If they had no means to hide away from their failures and attempts these threads would be rare and uninteresting.

They exist because companies like Sony and Bungie lie, they get sites to lie for them, they push narratives that are not even true as a means to mitigated the complete failures they have been in this, thus it leads to a lot of people to roll out all the data they can to find the real truth of the matter. You want this shit to stop, making the data and information of what goes into these things as well as their sales as transparent as possible and these threads would be pointless.
>>

>>736722120
I honestly don't trust Tarkov niggers to know what would be a good idea for a game like Marathon, mainly bc their too milsim autist to understand what Bungie would want to do
>>736726484
What I said above, but also I think I can see them getting too lost in the scope of all the live mechanics, artifact shit (these used to be like unique items with insane shit tied to them right? marathon doesn't have anything like them now right?) and map mechanics... but like... that all sounds kinda based???
Imagining an actually persistent open map concept with actual variety and cool secrets and mechanics abounding to get people working together on and think it'd be awesome.

ofc bungie probably saw that and thought that's TOO cool and TOO big, and that's why we're here. They don't have the balls to make actually inovative and groundshattering games anymore... despite their AAA budgets to do it... so really what are they good for? nothing. you get marabore
>>
>>736729159
I understand that but this is the irony.
Their ability to lie and push their marketing isn't native to 4chan, 4channers themselves post it like this.
The implication is that you're bringing attention to their game, and to a demographic they don't target.
4channers don't even look at the fake numbers to begin with, let alone do they need a hint that it's fake.
A thread complaining about it starts to look like a stealth billboard.
>>

We are past that working anon. Since 2022 it's become clear that bringing attention of any kind doesn't work and their is about 2.1 billion lost to show it really doesn't work. From rage bait, to memes, to chart threads, none of it equals sales, it's a tactic that fails to work.

Now that I'm typing this out, wasn't 2023 when 4chan's traffic took a serious nose dive as well as all those major outlets on X and Facebook just stop posting as much?

>>
>>736729928
Right, but they still kick and scream because they think they can hide things from it.
We all know people that will just lie about things, normally what stops the lies is when they think they have no more room to bullshit. >>
>>736729789

Would adding some sexy girls to the game save it?
>>
>>736730063
I think I'm of the opposite mind. We should encourage it because it costs them money to maintain the lie but doesn't get actual results.
Or rather I guess we don't have to encourage it, this is what happens. They waste their money on the market and not the game and to nobodies surprise the game isn't fun and gamers see through the lie within the refund window anyway. Nobody really loses here except the publisher.

Extraction shooters won't become a major genre because their mechanics ultimately fucking suck to most rational people. They are an entire game predicated innately on giving no lifers not just knowledge advantages but statistically superior loadouts than anyone new. It is unironically a genre entirely based around enabling the power fantasy of seal clubbing until all the seals leave. The only games that will avoid this are ones with coop as a heavy focus instead of PVP.

Not at all, the marketing was fantastic.

I think the actual problem is that they're going after a market that doesn't really exist. Extraction shooters are a niche to begin with, and within that niche the existing players are most likely going to stay in their comfort zone (the game they've already invested the most in). Arc Raiders players aren't going to just migrate over to Marathon because the latter doesn't have the aggression-based matchmaking they like. That issue is compounded by the fact that live service games use things like unlockable cosmetics to create player attachment - players leaving over gameplay is one thing, but they'll think twice about leaving it if it means abandoning hundreds or even thousands of dollars they may have spent on cosmetics. It's the reason why no game was ever going to "kill" World of Warcraft, because players who've spent thousands of dollars and hours on that game are just more likely to stay there.

It feels like Bungie either didn't understand the market, or they genuinely believed they could just convert a whole bunch of new players into extraction shooter fans. Maybe they believed the former Destiny audience would be 'loyal' and come back for Marathon (lol)

Yep, it's the normal 'I'll pretend to ignore the existing information that proves me wrong' shit they always do, like constantly asking for 'SOURCE??' about the budget stuff despite anons giving it to them over and over.

It has to be some kind of mental defense mechanism to keep them from having to admit they have been wrong, are wrong now, and will continue to be wrong.
