holy FUCK has a game ever made me lose all interest midway through. i have zero interest finishing this piece of shit after Act 2. I DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE DESSENDRE FAMILY! imagine of lord of the rings suddenly zoomed out from frodo and sam in mordor and told you it was all about saurons family troubles and who gives a fuck about the ring, its not important and not real anyway.
>>
My problem was the writing cause why tf are these people talking as if they were on stranger things season 5
>>
cool story bro
>>
>>736717510
But the Lord of the Rings setting IS about Sauron and his family troubles.
>>
>>736717624
thats silmarillion. except melkor instead of sauron

I hate the gestrals. They’re not cute, they’re annoying. And calling this mid game an rpg when you don’t have the option to kill every gestral you come across is insulting
>>
>>736717510
Yeah they rugpull you big time

for me that was the point where things got interesting
it's really a make or break situation for people

>>736717510
"It's all painters magic, I don't need to explain shit" ruined it for me. Life and death hold no meaning after that reveal anymore.

>>
Seems like public opinion has soured on this game
>>
>>736717951
almost like your party members died and immediately got brought back by magic. Yes, there are no stakes anymore. Worst case, make a new painting. Stop accusing others of illiteracy when you are like a 40iq person.
>>
>>736718069
>Worst case, make a new painting
>>
>>736718090
He's just a retard apparently, like the plot is so much about life and death. For fuck sake the most important plot point is how Verso's death led everyone to grief stricken madness. Painted Verso wants it all to end so his family can move on etc etc.
I would say anon's baiting but maybe the school system just failed him. Sad!
>>
>>736717951
All of the party save for Maelle and Verso get gommaged immediately after they successfully defeated the Paintress. Something that Verso knew would happen but kept quiet about, which also begs the question of why he's even still allowed to be in the party when Maelle makes clones of said party members and the autistic Asian is understandably angry about it. She remains incredibly autistically angry as her entire world gets unmade around her if you go for the Verso ending too. But she never really existed, so it doesn't really matter.
>>
"For those who come after" sort of lost all meaning for me. The game itself does away with it it both literally and thematically.
The fact that fans and devs of this game still say it as a signifier of their fandom is a bit ironic.
>>
>>736718193
>btw youre all not real and i literally just imagined you back to life t. maelle
>oh ok t. lume and sciel

I hated the twist too on an initial playthrough. I gave it a second shot a few months later and I appreciated it a lot more, you notice a lot more little hints that it's coming.
I really like what the game does with Verso, he's introduced to literally replace Gustave so you're automatically biased against him, he's sussy as fuck but by the end it's hard to not side with him. I genuinely think he's one of the best written characters in vidya.
>>
>>736717694
Silmarilion is about one elf dude having a massive chimpout because satan stole his bling and pulling half of his race with him.
>>
>>736717510
I saw this twist coming from almost the very beginning. Still thought it was kino though.
>>
ur bad get over it
>>
>>736719048
>>736718943
i figured a twist that was something like this was coming, but that wasnt my main issue. the main issue isnt just that rhe people were painted, but that they were completely sidelined and became irrelevant to the narrarive. i spent over 40 hours with these people and now thhe story just expects me to stop caring about them and start caring about some gay depressed family playing gods. like these characters have all these tragic backstories but they just entirely stop mattering and youre left wondering why you even cared.
>>
>>736718943
>you notice a lot more little hints that it's coming.
And if you know it's coming because of tropes and cliche brain rot, you will hate it.
>>
>>736719219
But why, anon? They're fictional characters in a video game. That didn't stop you from caring about them. Just because they're literally also fictional characters within the story itself it means you can't still care about them? They still have feelings and lives they've lived and are still in danger of losing their world. And if you pay attention to the story, the paintings they inhabit are a lot more alive than they are in the real world.
>>
>>736717889
Midwit
>>
ITT: Retarded spergs lol
>>
>>736719364
see, thats what im trying to say: my problem isnt the twist per se but how the original characters are completely sidelined after it. i want to keep caring about these people but the writers clearly dont want me to.
>>
>>736719435
Maelle can keep repainting all the people she knows, she can presumably even remove parts of them she doesn't like if she is so inclined. Her sister did it within the painting, her own mother made a painted replica of her family to play house with. The painted people are at best toys, and at worst slaves to god-like beings who will use them for their own perverse ends and they have no real way to stop it.
>>
>>736717510
That's pretty much the only argument, to me, that is truly receivable when someone says they don't like the plot/the game
>>
>>736717510
>playing the game in front of my friends
>choose verso's ending
>they all proceed to shit on me for not respecting paint people's lives and not allowing burn victims to run away from life
It's escapism! Can't you see? It's not healthy!
>>
>>736719219
Yeah, that's why I hated it too when I first played it. I was interested in the concept of world slowly getting erased and I didn't care for the family drama too.
But if you actually think about it, nothing really changes. What I mean is, you can squint and pretend that this has a generic jRPG story where Sculptor was the true villain all along manipulating you or whatever, like lying Airy, and the story still works.
Maelle and Verso are still extremely important and their arcs are a natural continuation of what happened up to that point while Lune and Sciel were kinda irrelevant to the overall story in the first place if we're being honest.
The family angle doesn't really take away from anything.
>>
I have something to confess. I never used the other party members, just spammed Maelle + Luna + Verso

>>
>>736719219
Yea I felt the same, the game clearly makes you want to ask some philosophical questions but it doesnt really matter because you get railroaded into a trolley problem. The dessendres are all fucking up in their own unique way so the population of the canvas is going to get fucked either way.

I honestly don't know why so many people hate on the story of this game. Is it an age thing? Sure, a 14 year old snotnosed kid would go in and expect your average "let's save the world" plot and may not like it. But once you are over the age of 18 you should appreciate the themes much more.

The game works because noone is in the wrong. They all have very reasonable motives for doing what they do. And I don't get why people hate Verso.
>b-but he lied
He's literally the spirit of a dead person wanting to finally die. And he sees what the painting does to his family.
>>
>>736717510
Anyone who’s impressed by the plot of E33 should really read more. That’s like boilerplate sci-fi in a modern fantasy guise.
>>
>>736721879
The story doesn't bend over to suck his dick, or overly justify him and Maelle's shift from heroic to self-centred is done way better than Ellie's hamfisted fall from grace.
He also doesn't do anything nearly as heinous as Abby, you're meant to resent him because he replaces Gustave but you don't really have a reason to instantly hate him.
>>
>>736722274
>He also doesn't do anything nearly as heinous as Abby
Are you for real? He intentionally lies and deceives a group of people into accidentally destroying their world.

>>

I obviously referred to the introduction, Abby is introduced by killing the most popular character from the franchise and the writers had the gall to believe they were so good they'd make the player side with her by the end.

> He intentionally lies and deceives a group of people into accidentally destroying their world.

Let’s be fair here, the group didn’t have a chance in hell of actually defeating the paintress without Verso guiding them.
>>
>>736722478
Ok cool, so we agree it’s stale, trodded out schlock that people are impressed with only because this is the only time they came into contact with it.
>>
I love this game and everything it does to bits, there's only one thing that has always bothered me, where they didn't really think about what the setting would actually be like
>Alicia enters the painting
>Clea casually goes "if you do that you'll get painted over"
Not entering a painting if you're not strong enough should be rule number one of this society. Clea should be fucking panicking, because getting painted over means you experience an entire other life that you fully understand as your real life until you die and get kicked out. This will lead to schizophrenia in 100% of all cases, and will have happened in this setting before

Absolutely soulless comment. The gestrals are an integral part of the actually interesting worldbuilding characteristic. The fact that this strange alien world and its inhabitants were made by an 8 year old boy is the greatest piece of writing in the whole game. It establishes a totally unique worldbuilding setting unlike any found in vast majority of media. We get to see and interact with icons of pure childhood innocence and the bright ideals they embody in stark contrast to the mired dull malaise of adulthood.

No, I said it comes from Plato. But such a simple twist doesn't really work in books, but it can work in movies or short stories. Modern literature is basically meta fictional by default, and so any allusions to dreams or simulations starts with the idea that the story, life itself, is the dream.

>>736723084

Serious question with all the threads I've lurked regarding this game.
Why do brown people generally fail to connect with its themes? I mean Art, Legacy is a given but the most basic one they fail to connect with is Grieving.
Imagine losing your older brother in a fire. As someone who grew up in functional/traditional western family it would be devastating and that's why I could relate to the Dessendre actions.
I've seen a lot of posts in India on xitter where they barely even react when they see someone die.
My brother went to Africa when he was in the army and told me corpes were lying on the roads for weeks and not a single negro cared over there.

The whole E33 discourse is not that deep. It's praise does not hinge on novelty it is built upon a foundation of above average execution. It's a bog standard narrative but the minutia of how it is presented is praiseworthy. It's akin to a beautifully shot film that is noteworthy for its cinematography and then people discussing the plotholes. You aren't interfacing with the element that is universally praised. The element in this case being "holy shit, someone made a jrpg with characters that talk like humans and react to events in a normal way rather than cardboard anime trope cutouts." Is it a low bar? Is it really a low bar when it is as of yet unseen in a 40+ year old medium with 1000s of entries? The sadder fact is that it is not a low bar and tard wrangling idiotic writers to write something sincere, grounded, and with great pacing is apparently a titanic achievement.

I don’t have to praise mediocrity just because everything else is below mediocrity. It’s perfectly doable to evaluate something on its own merits. It’s extremely telling you feel the need to bring up JRPGs to prop up E33, is that all you have?
>>
>>736724369
What model are you using?

The E33 hate that emerged from third world weebs on xitter feels extremely artificial and performative.

AC shadows was not made by japanese people, but the game takes place in Japan, with places, weapons, and characters from Japanese history
So when a greasy and stupid American asks what's Western about DS, I simply tell him it's based on a medieval fantasy universe inspired by European myths and tales during the middle age
America is humiliated, once again, this has been recurring lately

Yes, but there are elements of Western culture inside
So asking what's Western about it is retarded when the answer seems obvious (since we can see it on the game's cover)

Mediocrity is defined by the corpus of peers. E33 cannot be mediocre because what alternative could you even attempt to argue has superior characterization, pacing, and groundedness? Again, is the bar really that low if no such example exists? I look forward to your explicit examples of superior storytelling execution. If it's mediocre then surely there are many examples that mog it.

DS1 is a uniquely second language game. Miyazaki explicitly told us his worldbuilding philosophy which is derived from poorly comprehending native text and cobbling together a fanfic understanding of the broader strokes filling in the blanks with one's own imagination. There's nothing Greek about that, it has a dreamlike quality and logic to it.
>>
>>736725502
And again you are not even trying to argue the merits of E33 as a game. Hundreds of movies and novels mog E33 on the bar you set there, which you tentatively already agree with since you moved the scope to JRPGs, who also can’t compete.
>>
>>736725502
>Again, is the bar really that low if no such example exists?

Yes, E33 released at a time when it had no real competition in any of those areas that even though it would be considered at best pretty average even for its genre, the current industry is pumping out nothing but garbage so consistently that what would be considered average several decades ago now feels like a masterpiece when placed next to its contemporaries.

Name the old relics that mog it then. Come on anons, nuts on the table. Let's see some real examples and have a real discussion. Mass Effect is a better overall delivery of its story without breaking its own narrative in half with the plot twist.

God of War 1 pulls off a Greek tragedy incredibly well while also having some of the best action combat for the PS2 era.

The Legacy of Kain series tackles concepts of determinism vs free with equal nuance to both ideas.

Fuck I'd even throw in Spec Ops: The Line for having a twist that recontextualizes the whole game, no matter how many farts the devs were sniffing while doing it. At least it doesn't completely undermine one half of the game when it happens.

Hell I'd even say Hotline Miami does a better job of pulling off a plot twist with its character swap mid game from Jacket to Biker without losing its intense combat alone the way. E33 can becomes stupidly easy at the end as the rest of the game seemingly just gives up trying to challenge you if go off the main road for even a brief moment.

So yes, E33 is mid, but it's better than what's coming out lately to compare it to.
>>
>>736725697

They probably do. The game just cuts past the explanation. Plus, they have more important things to be doing.
>>
>>736726414
theres actually only like 4 hours of cutscenes in the game and one playthrough easily lasts 40 hours.
>>
>>736726061
Thank you for actually putting forth examples.

Mass effect is a nonstarter for me because it is clearly inferior in its execution. Part of this is due to the structure of having the player involved in deciding how scenes play out. Shepherd can act completely schizophrenic, which isn't exactly a fair critique, but it is a real issue with character consistency. What can't be ignored is how wooden shepherd and his crew are in the vast majority of situations. It doesn't do a terrible job, but the execution is not up to E33's standards of character writing.

God of war 1 is well done, but it is also a story lacking any nuance. Kratos is not even a human character, he's just a force of nature. It's much much easier to write trope characters like this than grounded characters. Nothing wrong with this type of story but it isn't a useful comparison

Never played legacy of kain so can't comment here.

As far as games with a twist goes I'm not championing E33 here. My position has consistently been that E33 nails all the subtle details better. Fixating on the twist execution is the problem with all E33 discussion. For some people it is an irredeemable flaw. I think that's incredibly ignorant to judge the whole work based on the twist when the praiseworthy elements are the details. Succinct dialogue that is still impactful and endearing. Great narrative pacing to a fault. Verso is a shit character because he is the agent in service of creating great pacing. I'll also reiterate fantastic VA performances that vastly elevate the material. Seriously, they did so much of the heavy lifting.

>Huuhhhh...there's nothing Japanese about it, except… the fighting style named IAJUTSU (japanese word), the main character's clothing, the references to japanese pop culture, the influence of japanese cinema on the staging of certain action sequences…duuHHHH... the main character is clearly inspired by the RONIN model (a japanese word) with his code of honor, the BUSHIDO (also a japanese word).

>>
>>736717510
It was totally forseeable and many details in the game were aiming at that. Didn't you see the faded character in the game ? If you would clearly thought the game would stick with the original plot, you are very naive. The areas had too much sense to be part of a real and logical world. Maelle had a ton of fire skills for a reason and there was also a reason why a character was mostly looking like her.

You just don't get it man. You don't understand the soul of a work and can only point at references and clap. You think derivative references are the essence of the thing itself. Sadly there are many such "creators" pumping out garbage every day just like you.

Let me make this easier for your baiting ass. Dark souls was made through the lens of a japanese man that can't speak and maybe barely read English recalling how he interfaced with reading fairytales. Katana zero was made by trash otaku weebs. It shows in the style of the games they produced.

This is exactly what i said, Dark souls is a JAPANESE game, made from A to Z by JAPANESE developpers in JAPAN but that doesn't change the fact that when you see the environments, the creatures, the architecture, the history, it's clear that it was influenced by EUROPE. However, that doesn't mean the game is EUROPEAN, but rather that without European myths and legends, Dark Souls would never have existed, or at least it would have been radically different. It's like saying there's nothing American about CP2077 because it was made by Poles
