No, SO5 is legitimately awful. Even as someone who both likes the series and has high tolerance for mediocre/jank JRPGs, it's still on my list of regret purchases.

in my eyes it was like a SNES RPG released for PS4, it wasn't terrible as an experience but it made some seriously questionable errors that you'd think the video game industry is well past

The funniest part about this is this theme was the boss theme after a key story moment when an important character got fatally wounded. The ensuing boss fight is effectively the MC taking out their rage on the bad guy. So imagine a harrowing emotional moment during a cutscene and then you suddenly enter a boss fight and-

Yes. The first four games in the star ocean series are all really good and worth playing imo

>>736750678
Really dissapointed this never got a physical release for the switch. Especially since square Enix had such a huge amount of games released for the switch even niche stuff like Romancing saga. Also pretty surprised we haven't seen a star ocean 3 remaster both seem like slam dunks.

Also pretty surprised tri ace fell off so hard after star ocean 5. They hit the ground running hard at the beginning of 7th gen and then just totally petered out. What are they even working on right now?

Ok, so where do I start, so I can dd to my backlog, gonig through Ars Tonelico series now

SO first departure then 2 and release order

So what's the timeline on these games? Or are the stories secluded?
>>
>>736750678
I think I bricked myself early with decision paralysis lol. I couldn't decide what characters I wanted to recruit despite being nowhere near that point of the story. I can't even remember who you all choose between... You can pick two of the rival psycho guy, the cute thief girl, the cute Negro girl, or Tintin. I think I definitely wanted the negro but couldn't decide between the thief who was cute or the psycho for the story and gameplay.

>>
Star Ocean fucking sucks. I hate how every game just focuses on dumb generic low tech planets for most of the games.
>>
Lot of Star Ocean threads lately. It would be cool if they ported 3 to more platforms though. Is Tri-Ace still even alive? I guess SE owns the IP I think.
>>
>>736755010
This. I can't believe people are romanticizing 4. Even 6 was better than 4. Also 4,5, and 6 were all dramatically worse than 2 and 3.
>>
>>736755580
Isn't that the dominating theme of all Star Ocean games?
>>
>>736755664
Yes he's being retarded
>>
>>736755580
Part of the point. The fantasy is innate to the series. It's about explorers from the stars figuring stuff out on mysterious and magical worlds.
>>
>>736755627
>Is Tri-Ace still even alive?
Yes. Tri ace is kinda to square what monolithsoft is to Nintendo. Except that square isn't nearly as generous giving budgets to tri ace for original games as Nintendo is with monolith. Instead they basically just make tri ace work the mines of various square Enix projects doing all the work and getting none of the credit, kinda like monolith with breath of the wild. They're a more talented programing studio than any internal sqaure studio too, kinda like monolith is more talented than any internal Nintendo studio, so square won't let tri ace go under just make them code servants.
>>
>>736755627
They are still technically alive, but they're back to releasing chintzy mobage-esque slop
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2660510/OCTOPinbs/
>>
>>736750678
I did, Divine Force fucking sucked, but Second Story Remake was amazing
>>
>>736755292
>Is that the ps4 game?
I dohn't know

>Hope something?
Always heard about it, and also just now I discovered it's from Square Enix (actually first from Enix).
So I am assuming it's good but I really have no idea about the game. I truly know 0 about it, beside the JRPG part.
>>
>>736755631
4 lives up to the Sci fi setting unlike the other games in the series. And the combat is ridiculously fun. Most arpgs have a couple fun characters and then the boring ones, but it's one of the few I've played where every character is ridiculously fun to use in combat. It's hard to pick who you want to use. I could gush on and on but basically the games only real weakness' is a weak story. I like the cast as the goofy goobers they are but the overarching story just kinda sucks.

Mass effect was a good influence on star ocean tri ace was clearly influenced by that series for 4. It's much more Sci fi than the other entries as a result. The calnus even looks alot like the Normandy.
>>
>>736754972
They are all related as far as I know but sometimes generations pass between games
>>
>>736755067
I liked it. It has a hot robogirl if you like them
>>
>>736756383
Nice.

I will love her.
>>
>>736755067
It's no SO2, but it's better than most if not all of the rest of the series.

>>
>>736755580
3 did something with the sci-fi setting and retards still bitch about it to this day
>>
>>736755627
3 is playable on PS4/5 at least, as part of their PS2 on PS4 program Sony did for a bit
Dark Cloud 2 and Rogue Galaxy too
>>
>>736750678
I only played so2 and it's latest remake, I just can't get into the non pixel style of the successors
>>
>>736757627
honestly understandable
>>
>>736751312
It uses a shoestring budget to try out some new ideas while retreading a lot of SO1 and SO3's groundwork. If you like the characters (Emmerson's great, Anne and Fiore are pretty good) or battle system (I don't) it's tolerable, otherwise it's an underwhelming experience with the good ideas already brought to newer SE games.
>>
>>736751312
It gets a lot of undeserved hate, it's just a game made with a really small budget, but they put some good ideas into it like the role system and 7 members party.
>>
>>736759243
For me the game just ended too damn early
>>
>>736751084
Piggy backing off this anon but do the games follow a single continuity or go the FF route where you can play whatever whenever? I bought this on ps4/5 now ages ago and made a little progress and this thread is giving me the itch to try again.
>>
>>736760127
They do follow a single continuity, but they aren't released in chronological order, shouldn't be played in chronological order, and for the most part are self-contained stories beyond references to previous entries.
>>
>>736750678
I am playing Star Ocean. 2 and 4 are my favorite and I found a copy of 3 recently and playing now and really enjoying it. Blows FFX out of the water imo

>>
>>736760574
it's definitely a b-team doing this, the main team's doing something else since SO6
>>
>plays all of them
>one question still not solved
Who or what the fuck is Welch Vineyard?
>>
>>736763979
The most likely theory is a 4D being who decides to screw with the protags of each game.
Anamnesis made a curious distinction with 5 Welch (base, red, Valentine's) and Anamnesis Welch being separate characters, and 6 Welch is supposedly descended from A Welch (x Yrian?), so you can draw your own conclusion between recurring NPC, alt accounts, or the same person larping across time and space.
>>
The onyl Star Ocean game Ive played was on the PS1. It looked a lot like Xenogears, where the characters were 2D sprites and the environment was 3D. Main character was a white blonde dude but if I remember correctly the game let you pick between him and a blue/green haired girl.
>>
>>736751312
5 was god awful. 4 was only awful if your a achievement whore.

I liked the brown skinned girl from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Should replay it so I can actually see more of her in game.

It's great. The main lead, Ray, is the best lead in the whole series. Even if his face looks fuckin' weird.

yeah not sure how they fucked up his face. The art looks fine

Can't be 4 since this stopped me from continuing. Genuinely TERRIBLE exploration.

Give Divine Force a shot gro
>>
when are they remaking 3 or at least releasing it remastered on steam

Is exploring in the other games less tedious than 6? It's the only game in the series I've played but the environments are so huge that the game just feels like a slog to play.

But where/how does 3 stand in the greater picture? Yes I'm talking about the whole universe is a video game thing This gives me a feeling that either the whole timeline doesn't matter much or 3 is on the dead end of the timeline.

I'd probably have to give Tales of Vesperia that honor, but SO3 is really great. Both really varied to highlight lots of different thematic moments and relaxing town things and dramatic battle stuff.
Really kind of similar now that I've said that.
