>>736752285The problem with the concept of an anti-villain is that due to their competency and motives, most people are just going to view them as a hero regardless. So all you're really doing is establishing a hero who some people argue was actually wrong, which is extremely common.

>>736753846>NGOsThat's a peculiar term to me. Why do you need to specify that an organizations non-government? Just specify when it is a government organization.
I wouldn't say that it's motive and method that describe a hero, antihero, villain, or antivillain. Because having good motives and good methods would make you a hero. What defines what a hero or antihero is at any given time is actually society and what society deems acceptable, heroic qualities. The social status and likeability (by society at large) is the key difference between a hero and antihero. Today's society views vigilantes and outlaws as antiheroes, when in the past they may have just been viewed as perfectly traditional heroes (i.e. Robin Hood). It's the societal expectation that matters most. A hero is somebody that does good things and fits societal expectations of heroic traits (which change with time), so they're socially accepted. An antihero is just a hero that's socially rejected for one reason or another (violence, selfishness, non-heroic qualities, whatever). If a villain is the opposite of a hero, that means they do bad things and they're also a social reject. They don't fit societal expectations. So an antivillain would do bad things but be socially accepted. They'd be seen as part of society and somebody that follows the rules, but they're evil. So, yeah, a corrupt politician or somebody that works within the system or abuses it for their own ends.I don't think it needs a special term because that's just what a villain does. A non-heroic hero is an important distinction for a story, but a villain that hides his villainy is just a twist.
90% of "villains" are this nowadays because people can't handle a bad guy, it makes them anxious when the bad guy does bad things

>>736755583I think the implication of this is that they are only a villain in regards to the hero. Otherwise a person could rightly view them as neutral or even heroic.
>>736752285Anti-villian isn't a villain with good qualities, it's someone like Zuko, someone who fills the role of antagonist but doesn't quite fit in it due to internal conflict and doubt.

>>736756089Exactly, people have been programmed very hard to forget the system has an out and they have the power to use it. Instead of inciting violence, you can try to deprogram the population and remind them of the out and the power they have, because the people who are responsible for programming the public conscious will never ever do it themselves as they are the biggest benefactors of upholding said programming. The biggest frustration of mine is that I have lived to see the exact opposite happen to my country, despite it having 23 potential candidates, unhinged online discourse and rampant misinformation campaigns have programmed my people to only ever think of the two worst options in the history of our democracy, and neither is interested in dispelling the programming because neither would have a chance in hell of being elected if it was.

>>736752285An Anti-Hero is a character with good intentions, but who tries to solve problems the wrong way, usually for selfish reasons. As in, the only thing that makes them "Good" is that their goals happen to align with what we consider good. If they wanted something else, they'd just be a villain. An Anti-Villain would be a character with bad intentions, but who tries to achieve their goals in an honest and legitimate way, and for reasons they believe to be entirely selfless. Which is just a delusional asshole with a broken philosophy. Which covers a huge proportion of villains, who can better be summarized as True Believers. That's every religiously motivated villain from Claude Frollo to the Order of the Sword from Devil May Cry 4. And it's also every Might Makes Right villain like Senator Armstrong.Any manipulation you can make to the concept of a villain in fiction is just a homologue to a specific archetype of villain.
>>736756450Bill Gates did a lot of things, from finance personal computing to sterilizing Africans. Only one of those can actually be called persuasive or enjoyable.

>>736756602k bro, when are you going to get off your ass and practice what you preach? Or are you just another conformed pessimist too comfortable in your own hypocrisy of wanting everyone else to do it and suffer the consequences so you can stay unbothered and reap all the rewards afterwards? You want another Luigi to happen so badly, but you're the only one who can guarantee one happens, yet you don't do it, and instead chooses to berate others for not doing it in your stead.
>>736756353>you can try to deprogram the population and remind them of the out and the power they haveExcept people are stupid and on their own they will not reach conclusions that are best for their fellow man and in many cases, even themselves.Every single uprising has a individual or a small group that defines the goals and ideas of a revolution, that's why anarchy is very short lived all throughout history, anarchy only exist briefly during power transitions. All that said, I don't care to deprogram anyone, I hate those that are susceptible to their lies, they are borderline cattle.
>>736756861Upset glownigger glows a tad bit too brightly in this post, methinks.
>>736755751That's just an antagonist, then. If you're describing a character that is good or heroic but opposes the hero, that doesn't make them a villain. If they're opposing the hero for evil reasons (i.e. they don't want the hero to save the world), then they're a villain. The perspective of who's a hero and villain is on the audience, not the characters. You can have villainous protagonists and heroic antagonists. The Witch-King might be seen as heroic to the orcs, but that doesn't make him a hero because the audience knows he's evil (and that wouldn't change even if the story was from his perspective and he was the protagonist).>>736755745He does work within the system, but he's also the quintessential villain because he's literally the Dark Evil Emperor that's so Evil he shoots Evil Lightning and talks about controlling the galaxy. He shouldn't be an antivillain. I guess I kind of muddled the idea because it matters more what the audience's society views as heroic or villainous, rather than the in-universe society, so it's not a matter of working within the system as much as it is behaving in traditionally heroic (to the audience) ways but being evil. Palpatine deceives people into thinking he's good, but everybody watching knows he's pure evil and fits every trait our society defines as evil. So he's a villain, just hiding it well.>>736755814I think Zuko is a great example and kind of makes me change my mind to say that a distinction between villain and antivillain does exist. Where an antivillain is somebody that's obviously doing evil things and is a bad guy, but from the audience perspective they're clearly a good person at core (or have traits that fit that). The mirror of an antihero (good guy that the audience identifies as being a bad person). So I guess it really just has to be somebody like Zuko who's gotten trolled into being a villain and has angst over it.
