I wanted to like Returnal but the rogue elements ruined it for me. The movement is great, exploration feels like Metroid, but the general room to room combat isn't fun. I'd enjoy it more if there were meta progression unlockables, or more of them. Trying to build up a run at the start, every pickup and parasites is fucking compromised with a malignant state. Felt like I was trucking along, got a decent upgrade to my gun, entered a room and then teleporting vine enemy covered for leaping ape who jumped the room and smashed my face in. Uninstalled it right there. Bullet hell only works when there's patterns, randomized just sucks. I bet the boss fights are good for that reason but it's not worth trying to get there.

The story/lore isn't worth discussing because while the alien planet she is trapped on and the elder thing Xaos torturing her are both supposedly real, what is and isn't in her head is completely unclear. Yet, at the same time, her feelings of guilt over family that are being used to torment her are blatantly straight forward. The level design/room variety is incredibly small and not memorable.Some of the technology designs and ideas behind the space exploration team, and the maybe-real-maybe-not-real aliens are somewhat interesting, but the ambiguousness on how much is real and accurate for those specific things ends the discussion right there.There is just nothing interesting to discuss in, "It's all in her head," or "It was/is all a dream."Honestly, focusing on how the main character is not attractive, or at least not conventionally attractive, is the only thing to discuss that can yield some actual traction and mileage because that can lead to deeper conversation about industry trends, ideological capture, feminization of industry, etc, etc. It's like the game was designed from the ground up to take an interesting premise and make it as uninteresting as possible so that the only interesting thing about it is how you can use it to jump into criticisms of the industry as whole.
