What makes it worse than 1 and 2?

Nothing. It's better than 1 and 2.

Having a superior player controller, better graphics, better spooky set pieces, a story deeper than a guy looking for a woman, a good OST, and no pandering to autists who want to invent their own story for the game all make it worse

it's literally the best of the 3 though?

It became too much of an action game and they had the formula pretty much established so they didn't do anything new. Still though for a game made with no time and no budget it was pretty good.

Extra emphasis on the combat, and less direction in the story. Had some great moments and great areas, but thought it was kind of disappointing to fall back on a pretty straightforward revenge plot.

I wouldn't say it's worse necessarily, just that the bad parts of it are bad in different ways to prior games. SH3 has some amazing sequences, environments, enemies, and story telling. But it has some really tedious shit in it.

>Way more enemy density compared to previous games, to the point it feels like you're constantly running from/fighting something
>Some of the worst enemies in the entire series, most notably the Slurper who is fast, crawls on the floor, spawns in cramped environments, has a tendency to knock Heather to the ground which gives them a chance to get another hit, and actually takes a fair amount of damage to kill
>Way more traps, such as the death pits you can fall into or the haunted house sequence
>Less ending variety, in which you can't even get the other endings on a first playthrough
>A fuck ton of items but little reason to utilize them outside of harder difficulties since the gameplay is basically unchanged from the first game (see jerky, perfume, arguably the sheer variety/number of weapons when some are almost objectively better than others)

SH3 is the type of game I feel that has the highest highs and the lowest lows. So much of the game is fucking phenomenal, but then I get to some areas and just want to turn it off. All of the games have flaws, but I think SH3 has some of the most obvious issues to point towards. But it also has some of the coolest/creepiest stuff in the entire series, so I struggle to really place it above or below SH1 or SH2.

Seriously though, fuck Slurpers. Fuck that fucking monster. Holy shit.

I always see these tutorials that show off that the slurpers are blind and seemingly can't detect you with the flashlight off but it never fucking works. They're always annoyingly wide so using bait is ha4d because ypu usually have too little space to run past them.

Yeah slurpers are fucking bullshit. There's nothing worse than unfair game design where you can't avoid getting hit or losing and the japanese seem to be prone to this sort of thing. I just replayed SH2 and the boss fights while being easy were also annoying as fuck because you couldn't avoid getting hit after using the shotgun or rifle because they had such a long animation.

the pacing at the start is a bit bad, the game is pretty frontloaded with contextless critter crushing in various locales on the way back to the apartments, where the story begins in earnest. otherwise it's pretty good though

Did this happen to you in emulation or a "definitive" edition patched PC version? I had no such issues with enemies playing on proper PS2.

Emulator, eddie always gets hits off on you and mary's bats always get you when you use the rifle. Of course it's nothing more than an annoyance since SH2 is piss easy, but still it would've been nice if they had some kind of real game design instead of just stand there and spam x while using medkits.
