If you just draw for money or attention on twitter, you will never make it.
You cannot be a good artist unless you have a massive folder of drawings you just drew for yourself.
Art is a hobby first and a career second.

Drawing is the only skill I'm not sure how to learn. It seems nigh-impossible to get into if you don't find it at least a little bit intuitive. I don't know how to identify whatever it is I'm supposed to be trying to mark with lines, and I can't imagine what a drawing of any given subject would look like (even if the subject is right in front of me,) so I have no means of telling whether anything I'm doing is right or wrong. I can't even trace a photohraph because I just don't get how to use lines as a medium.

I used to, but I took a break for a while.

Niche question for help, I got an ipad for Christmas and it's pretty good for drawing, but I don't like the drawing programs on it. I tried procreate and while I can do hand exercises on there just fine, I can't get into the feeling of drawing. Something isn't clicking like I used to with Paint Tool Sai, where now I can't click with it because I'm spoiled by the ipad's lagless and crisp interface and switched to MS Paint. Nowadays the only way I can draw is with paper and pencil.

TL:DR Is there any program on the ipad that's good for drawing that's not procreate?

I'm happy the request threads were thrown into /vg/ and the requesters have to now pretend they always wanted to be in /vg/ "because /vg/ has more posts per minute and there might be new artists coming by". They fucking admitting their only chance to fool drawfag to draw for them is if the drawfag has no idea of the true nature of the request threads.

I started with FWAP years ago and I fucking HATED IT when starting from 0. Did I really have to learn all this bullshit just to start drawing sexy anime girls? However, I revisited the book years later and found it fun. The exercises really do help you think in 3d while staying 2d. I don't think it's something you visit as a total newbie, but more like "I've been copying and drawing what I like for a few months and I'm stuck trying to improve", it does contain a lot of useful info.

>>736788950
You don't post something for others, you post something for yourself, part of starting to love yourself as an artist is understanding that your art has as much right of being online as anything else, regardless of its quality.

>>
>>736784538
>>736784839
One thing I learned a while back was basically to treat digital and traditional as both different mediums of drawing. I know it seems kind of obvious, but trying to replicate a more traditional look of drawing will never feel like drawing on paper and how it looks. The traditional hand drawn look can be achieved digitally, but not without some extensive effort and as naturally as traditional.
That always seemed to be my issue with digital art.

Drawthreads are fucking embarrassing. I dont know how you get that many people to spam requests for that long when there’s only like three or less requests fulfilled per thread (and the artists often suck), and somehow the requesters all feel like theyre important and in charge and will go apeshit if you post your own art there without it being requested
>>
>>736789679

>I dont know how you get that many people to spam requests

Haha, imagine if it was just 2 guys posting 90% of the requests across different boards' drawthreads competing on which one gets more deliveries. That would be just absurd and there'd be no way anyone would dedicate all their wake hours to try score free art

>forgot
More like got brainwashed. Or groomed as the kids say these days.
"if you repeat something long enough, people will think it's true" isn't just a catchy phrase for pseudo intellectuals. It's bloody real, and it's the reason james managed to fool every drawthread newfag into believing drawthreads are supposed to be beg central. When the veterans leave in disgust, there's noone around to tell the newfags they're getting pysop'ed.
To me, the most disgusting part is that the mods can't be assed to do anything about it despite having the means to do so. They can see his posting history and expose all his FUD tactics and relentless samefagging but they choose to do nothing, except every once in a blue moon when a mod get sufficiently annoyed and nukeban him. Which is why he frequently does pre-emptive banevading to prevent all his spam getting nuked in one go.

pretty obvious when you compare requests with a unique/compelling premise that get multiple replies from drawfags to the resident vagrants shamelessly begging for anyone to draw their favoured lolis + waifus in some compromising outfit/position with no bites for weeks/months/years. drawthreads on /v/ might've stuck around if the trash was properly euthanized, but they weren't sooooooo

The idea is that you are supposed to put yourself in a position where you stop worrying, that is exactly what picking a pencil, listening to some nice music and getting lost in the flow is, that is what "just draw" means, if the process isn't fun, then there's no point in doing it.

Probably yeah. I think my problem is that I've broken my brain's relationship with drawing. I got anxious about learning properly, so I've created the negative association that drawing is difficult work that's not fun, and every session is a potential fuckup where I make a mistake and do it wrong.

I hate being one of those people that whines and complains because "ohh it's so hard, poor me", but fuck. I told yself that I was going to restart in the year, now it's fucking APRIL.

Nta but just sit down and doodle with pencil brush and draw something you would like to draw if you had all the skill in the world. It doesnt need to look good, it just needs to represent what you would want to draw. The cringier, the better.

The secret nobody tells you is that you actually need to put less effort when studying and practicing than when you actually make a drawing you like, you don't have to copy an entire anatomy book as accurately as you can, sometimes you pick it up, read it a bit, and do some mindless sketches off it, your brain will passively absorb the information, maybe not instantly, but like with everything, your brain updates after you take a good night of sleep.

This makes sense intuitively, and fuck I hope it's true. I see everyone around me doing all sorts of impressive-looking practice all the time, looking like they have a study schedule and all that, and get it in my head that I need to be hitting the books. Will I really be okay if I just do it casually and skimp out on my studies?
>>
>>736798474
the biggest secret? Trapezoids (not boxes) and cutting everything into threes knowing correct Kanji stroke order each time helps because its for perfect smooth brush strokes anyway to get clear lines. This is what Japanese artists won't ever tell you.

Sit still and close your eyes and when thoughts come to you, hear them and let them go, doing nothing. Do not repeat them when they are felt, dont select a word out of the thought, dont willfully generate a second thought out of the first one. Listen to your mind as the separate entity it is from you who embraces or ignores the thought, At least practice these things, its not a problem if this doesnt come immediately easy, though it can. You will notice and discover your own power to essentially be thinking nothing no matter how much is in your brain.

These threads actually motivated me to draw something each day. I'm on day 13 now.
Looks like stick figure and unrecognizable garbage and I think I should put a bit more structure into this. I did attempt a bit of fwap but I feel like I am too trash to get much out of it yet.
Is pic related good, I see it often recommended too aside from fwap. Did anyone here work with it?

>>736798761
It's all white drawn in light line. It's way too simple and nothing in it would make me stop scrolling to take better look at it and engage.

You need to put in more effort, more contrast, more interest. It's very lazy. Anatomy is good enough but execution is lacking. You wanted people to be interested with something you yourself wasn't interested to actually finish.

The main point of practice is to understand, once you "get it" you'll start seeing it in other people's drawings, in real life and then everything will turn into "practice". You don't need to do fully detailed studies unless you want to redefine later on when you are more comfortable or want to start making an encyclopedia of self made references to access, you can also just study things when necessity arises instead of doing everything at once.

this cycle has happened to me every few years ever since I gained an interest in drawing during middle school and it's fucking frustrating. doesn't help that improvement largely feels intangible in the early stages. at least with something like exercise, I can physically feel when I can run for a longer stretch of road without winding myself or perform additional reps on a given exercise without straining myself if I apply myself for even a few days, and it feels fantastic. the gains from drawings feel much less apparent in comparison, and it eventually leads to me dropping it out of annoyance before picking it up again a few years later

Older manga sometimes have these really pretty watercolour pages, back before they all went full digital. I used to dislike watercolours as a kid, but reading these pages and paying attention to the colouring has really made me want to try traditional drawing and painting myself. The only thing stopping me right now is that I keep forgetting to buy the means when I go shopping.

Googled him, and yeah, this shit looks mind-blowing, going to have to give it a read. It's unbelievable the eye some people develop for colours, and then apply that understanding perfectly page after page after page, knowing you don't get do-overs with watercolours. Actual fucking wizards.

Franco-belgian (and other european, by extension) comics were always close to my heart, and they also tend to display lots of competent watercolours throughout. Rereading some of them, I keep mentally kicking myself for completely glossing over the colour work for all these years. All of a sudden I find myself studying them instead of just consuming them.

>>
>>736808728
You chickenscratched outlines and you mindlessly drew some more lines. You didn't bring out form, you symbol drew the face. Like yeah, that is an anime face but you just slapped the features there without constructing and positioning them in 3d and in relation to each other. The hair and clothes lack the form and texture, the uncertain strokes are not your friend. Appealing anime neck is the width of arm. In reality necks tend to be wider, yeah, but for anime aesthetic female necks shouldn't go too wide. The pose is stiff, you went through the motions of outlining where everything is but there's no flow, there's no dynamic.

Keep at it. You will improve only if you draw more and pay attention, be mindful. Remember, we are not just printing 2d map where every thing is. We are conveying something 3d in 2d form and we need the lines to convey the 3d form, depth, weight, material, distance, importance, gravity.

The face and experssion show appeal and I can imagine you will be training your eye. Draw the lines with confidence. Wobbly lines can be used but you need to know how to use them. You can't hide your own uncertainity by adding some lines there just because, they need to have reason to be there and be like they are.

And don't flinch at the critique. You can and will do better as long as you continue. Good job making it this far.

What is the difference between figure drawing, gesture drawing, anatomy, or form?
For example I looked at Hampton's 'Figure Drawing: Design and Invention' and tom fox 'Anatomy for Artists: Drawing Form & Pose'. Do they cover the same topics just in different ways. Or are those different things because Figure vs. Pose/Anatomy?
>>
>>736814381
I personally find grinding gestures can help hone in your sense of proportion easier, and also later you can then construct on top of the gesture to help keep you loose.
>>
>>736783009
I don't understand drawing with shapes and perspective. i might be too brainlet for art.
>>
>>736783963
Practice. Practice. Practice. Grinding is how you figure out depicting these shapes, colors, etc. This is what it means to create an art style. We have the benefit of so many predecessors that we can build on what they made, and if that's how or what you want your step to developed into, go for it. That said, go watch a Bob Ross video. I shit you not, the way he calculatingly plops circles of green yellow and brown to make an intuitive but simple tree changed my perspective.

Gesture drawings are very loose, fast drawings to capture the feeling and movement of a pose. Figure drawing is drawing from life (a model or reference image). Form is the simplified 3-d shapes that can be used as a base for constructing the body (sphere skull, egg shaped ribcage, box shaped pelvis, etc). Anatomy is the actual knowledge of muscle masses and skeletal reference points

Yeah, hard agree. Explaining the bare basics of construction and Loomis' head method is good, but after that the book just throws you in the deep end with "next draw the rest of the body lel". Loomis' other books are better, though personally the resources that helped me the most with human figure construction early on were Hampton's book and Proko's anatomy playlist.
>>
>>736815207
Bridgman's "Constructive anatomy" was also a waste of money. The sketches are a mess, and they too assume you already know what you're doing.

This is good feedback. I'd focus on the bit about "symbol drawing". Try ignoring that you're drawing an eye and just draw the lines you see. You can do this by drawing from an upside-down reference. It helps prevent your mind from "filling in the blanks" when drawing from familiar forms.

Too many dickriders thinking themselves your friends just cause they reply to every post you make.
Focus on yourself, but if you really want followers:
0. Do good art
1. Do raffles/giveaways
2. Tag your shit
3. collab with people
4. follow fotms, blegh I know but it works

Only thing I miss is getting nudes from vtubers to use them as base for a drawing.

I think that's because there's really no "trick" to drawing. You just have to do it enough that it starts to make sense.
There are some absolute basics that you need to learn, but after that it really is just practice.

It will. Drawing attracts narcissists, megalomaniacs and beginners without critical eye (who think their art worth even single views). Those people believe their drawings, ideas are special and deserve attention. They think about social shit like followers (because most of them are zoomers and underage) and not about quality of their art (no critical eye). Very often they're envy of other successful artists, especially artists without high skills or artists who draw fanart ("Disgusting trendwhores! My deep thought-provoking art is miles above lowbrow kitschslop"). This is solved "archetype" that can be applied to all people crying about followers/popularity/etc with 99.9% success rate. Unless you're someone similar to Thdark101 (/ic/ anon who wasn't able to find job and quit art) you have no reasons to complain. You don't even "walk yet". Especially now when average drawing skill of typical artist is insanely high.

sharted up this sonic design in the last hour, sonic was of course huge in the uk in the 90s and i tried to imagine how it'd look if he was retooled for a uk-first audience, something like roland rat mixed with certain tracksuit-wearing ne'er-do-wells of the past. this is a sonic that looks like he smashes his head into poles to cure the boredom of living in birmingham.

No, of course there are many MANY more steps involved, i usually take crazy amounts of time drawing because i first draw in small then resize it and reline it so it looks slightly better, i shake too much and drawing big from the beginning makes my lines look atrocious.
A bit embarrassing but my canvas usually looks like this.

https://files.catbox.moe/p5jpeq.png Here's a redraw
The big thing to do would be to pull her back back. It's hard to exactly tell without the context of the other arm, but her pose is a little unbalanced, unless her other arm is on counter top or something. Doing this ends up balancing the pose as well as creating more contrasting angles, giving it a more dynamic look. It also pushes her bewbs out. In terms of other lines, she should have some kind of line where the arm connects to the toros. That's her lat. There's also a neck line there from her trap, but I realize she'll probably have that covered with the scarf so it isn't really important lol.
Proportions wise, I think her upper chest area is too tall and maybe her midsection is a little too tall. Face wise, maybe bring her cheek down a bit and shrink the eyes a little.
That's really it as far as "critique," but suggestion-wise her hands aren't doing too much there, it's a sort of contextless pose, almost like a glamour shot. Which nothing wrong with that lol, but it could be cute to give her hands something to do, like putting up her ponytail. One hand holding the hair up, another one with one of the chopsticks.
But yeah it's a really good start to the drawing, I'd say a more dynamic pose is the main thing to look for. You could do it the way I suggest, with a more exaggerated curve or you could do it another way, like an exaggerated torso twist of her turning towards the viewer. Great work so far, anon, keep it up.

>>
>>736826971
I guess it's also possible to just draw and choose not to learn anything from it, but I think for that you have to have no self-awareness or eye for beauty
>>
>>736797739
the only thing important is to get a good drawing surface or sturdy easle, some paper any pencil you fancy or have laying around

leave it there so you can just start

>>736805172
then doing this is genuinely how you do it
"oh this looks kinda off, i'll have to do that different/better next time and learn from my mistakes

it's better to make a dozen drawings after learning one tidbit of theory than go mad looking up 1000 things and only making one drawing

this is all you need
ESPECIALLY if you have trouble keeping it up
In an age with all the information you could possibly need the most important part is to not get overwhelmed
literally just draw atleast one thing x times per week no matter if you feel like it and go from there

t. currently painting bit by bit on my nonsense two days per week

That's not entirely bad, it means you're improving
But this is also a common thing, when you've spent so long looking at the same drawing, it starts to look normal, and you won't see any problems. Something that might help this is using the horizontal flip tool so that your image looks fresh again and you will immediately notice weird things

also woooww that's super cute. Really nice jon with the style variance. I think you did a good job capturing the longer proportions there. The emroidery on the dress is really cute too. Also thanks a lot, MS paint is certianly a different ballgame lol.
>>736829421
Hey, I only help cause you asked for it that one time lol, and have been receptive since then.
For this, all I did was lasso the three "sections" of your drawing and make them more askance to each other. and then also I took the left eye and turned it a bit and move it down to make it more in line with the rest of the face. As for the other arm, you have a few choices. Keeping it like the ref makes it almost imbisible, but you could put it on her hip or something. Or treading water maybe. Oh also I brought her torso down a bit too and added an overlap.
>>736834064 (you sent this as I'm typing it lol)
Ooh nice work. You implemented pretty much everything I just did lol. A lot more dynamic, but most importantly, stable. A stable pose is a fluid pose. Your lat line there is good too for the position her arm is in.
