I keep thinking of this game. I'm considering getting back into it, but the last two times I tried, I just couldn't get into it.I think it's mostly because getting into a grind or learning a new fight didn't seem worth the satisfaction of finishing, and since I knew that it was only for the one month I bought, or the four days of the free weekend, it didn't seem worthwhile.I've got over 5000 hours in this game since around Endwalker's Launch. I'm max on almost every class, and I cleared Light Heavy Weight week 1, and enough times after to gear up five gear sets.the Black Mage 7.2 change was like a lightswitch for me. That was the most fun class by far, even in early Dawntrail, and now it just feels hollow. I like other classes, but not nearly as much.Then there's the factor that I've got a ton of other games I want to play, and paying $15 a month to play one that took all of my time (time well spent) for years .Most of all, I think what I'm missing from that game is the singular experience with a living world. The random conversations I'd have in the endgame hub, Quips I'd share with dungeon groups, especially voice chats while doing extremes and savage raids. Just that bit of connection and interaction was a lot of fun, and really reminded me why I played MMOs.I already know that I'm coming back for 8.0 whatever that'll be, but apparently it's going to take a while for that to happen.

From what I've seen, they intend for tomes to be a reward for engaging in group content. A-ranks in current expansion zones take a lot of effort and/or are impossible to solo depending on your job, so you're somewhat forced into doing them in a group. FATEs are annoying to solo but can be done much more easily.

FFXIV players are absolutely better skilled at their own game compared to other MMOs. While forcing players into content that loosely trains them into what is expected is definitely a factor, I feel like there are some things that contribute to this PF culture way more: the "DDR" as you pointed out combined with well-knon strats let's you fit into parties easily, and the fact that you are expected to prog with other people new to the fight, rather than training raids. This makes PFing for prog actually possible. But more than that: fights are designed so everyone has to contribute more than just what their role does. Mechanic expect everyone in the party to do something, which seems to be unlike most other MMOs where strats allow for half or more of the raid to just treat the boss as a target dummy while your mesmer or whatever cheeses every mechanic. Add to that that failing a mechanic is, most of the time, obvious that you screwed and people try to do better. Usually.
