I've only ever played Osu/EBA/Muse Dash and want to get into a proper rhythm game. Is djmax a good option to start out? I want a modern game mind you, already tried some very old beatmania and it was kinda dated.
>>
>the only thread in the catalogue about the genre is also dead
Yep it's over.
>>
>>736790754
I swear this thread had more than two posts. Did a janny delete everything or is this a second thread?
Anyways I'm bad at rhythm games so I'll assume the average person also gets C ranks on Beginner mode and that's why they aren't popular outside of Japan.
>>
>>736790754
There's not much to talk about and most players play casually since song drops are spread out and the majority of custom charts are made by people that can't make anything below max level.
>>
>>736790775
djmax is very approachable
taiko might be the only game that's more approachable
>very old beatmania
pre-iidx is very jank. i only really got into it when i started playing in arcades. if you want a more modernized feeling konami game maybe try sound voltex

>Chunithm
So fucking good. I bought a Tasoller at release, I've actually more songs on my PC than any JP arcade machine ever had (since the seasonal stuff go away).

Also, would like to add
>Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
Rhythm game with FF songs? That's just a free printing money machine for me.
Thank god I can run it on emulator, my switch is dead. Too bad they don't release any DLCs though.
>>

>>
>>736790754
FNF a couple years ago was definitely deserving of a lower tier but I think now they've fixed a ton of the game's issues and it feels a lot better to play. I would move it to a low B in my opinion
>>
Games that put the arcade first are never going to be big on /v/ simply for most people not living in an area where they have access to those games, that said I like Ongeki and I'm glad to live close to an arcade that has it though I'm still middling at it
>>
>>736792207
Given how SHMUP threads are like on 4chan, this isn't really as bad as it feels.

>>
>>736793553
The experience of having to download separate mods over the internet that are actually standalone games is terrible.
>>
>>736795359
that much is true, though I was referring to the game itself and not the modding, though recent updates made the game easier to mod without a custom engine
>>
>>736795416
The game itself is barebones. It has what, like 10 songs? As stylish as it is, it is still terrible as a rhythm game.
>>
>>736795534

>I spent $500 on my setup and can only play toddler difficulty songs, I'm such a fan
Or
>I love going to my modern arcade focused on children's games and swatting at the cabinet for 5 minutes while my wife's son plays skeeball
Which doesn't lead to interesting discussion, so any thread on it is gunna plod along at a snail's pace

>Deadest
Outside of arcade releases, maybe.
Most of them are really expensive to get into if you want to use the controllers meant for them (Tatacons are as expensive as a Switch 1) or the game itself it's a live service scam (Konami)
>>
>>736796243
>Most of them are really expensive to get into
You can buy most of the base versions for less than $5 and you get 50+ hours of content. This is pretty affordable in my book. If you want all the songs it can get expensive, but you could say the same about any genre with microtransactions.
>>
>>736795534

54 counting the special collab song.
>>
>>736790754
I play OSRS every now and then. Does that count?
>>
>>736796771
You're bullshitting me. It's 7 weeks. I just looked it up and now there's a weekend and a special collab, but it's still mostly the 7 weeks.

I guess you're counting each week as 3 separate songs which is silly since some of them are like 1 minute long and clearly meant to follow up from one another but whatever, still laughable for rhythm game standards.

DJMAX Respect V is probably one of the best entry level rhythm games
>keyboard centric
>4, 5, 6 and 8 buttons modes

Since you know the game anon, how many hours does it take to become proficient at 6b? With 4b it felt like the notes were extensions of myself, everything was automatic and the flow was really fun. Now I'm trying to get into 6b. It feels mechanic, artificial and not fun. I'm 5 hours in.

That depends on you. I felt the same way when I moved from 6b to 8b, but after forcing myself to play in that mode for a few days, it started to feel natural. So, my advice would be to not give up and keep playing until it clicks.

I bought Rift of the Necrodancer purely so I could use the editor to make my own charts. At this point I've played more custom songs than actually base game charts. It's interesting that they made a pretty unique rhythm game with Crypt but went for a more traditional chart game for the sequel ,but hey, it's still fun as fuck.
I also really enjoyed Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory but I wish there were more coop charts.

>If you want all the songs
I simply refuse to support this outdated practice anymore. Any rhythm game worth playing on my computer needs to have readily available custom charts, especially if I'm going to need a 200 dollar hunk of plastic to play it.
>>
>>736802432
I hate custom charts. At least from my experience with things like Osu and FNF they are vastly inferior to charts from professional games. Especially fucking Osu holy shit I hate that game.
>>
>>736802432

>>736803082
>professionally made levels are better than middle school timmy's meme levels
No shit. The appeal of those games are to autistically push them to the limit, which most people don't care about. What the custom/fan-created charts need are curators to wade through the sea of garbage.
>>
>>736802878
>Any rhythm game worth playing on my computer needs to have readily available custom charts
I sure love going through mountains of trash to find a custom chart that's not fucking shit.
>>
>>736802896
you pretty much have to learn who the good charters are.
>>
>>736803082
You can simply choose to only play good charts. Acting like only the fat retarded nips that specifically work for that developer are the only people capable of making good charts is ridiculous and you know it.
>>736803252
It can be hard to filter out the good from the bad depending on the game for sure. If you get into the scene for the game you can usually see what good players are playing on their youtubes or in the forums though.
>>
>>736790754
>on steam
Go play on ps4 or nintendo consoles/handhelds. Ouendan 2 is imo the very best rhythm game.
Also go play Bits and Bops. It's a B at best, but still fun enough
>>
>>736803325
>>736803239
Except games with custom charts are never curated based on quality, but rather based on difficulty autism.

Making a good chart is not easy. You need to have gone through music school, and you need proper licensing to give you the resources to integrate the note sounds into the song. You can't just chart some garbage osu beatmap where the note sounds are wacky horns and the song is just background noise unrelated to the notes, then have it be circlejerked to the #1 bestest beatmap of the month.
>>
>>736790754
Shmups are the most dead of all. No schizos and avatarfags to circlejerk themselves = no threads
>>
>>736790754
I'm only playing rhythm games if they have touhou songs.

>>

>>
>>736803597
You're really begging for attention, but I think you'll generally find that dead insular circle jerks go uninterrupted, while actually alive ones are targeted by malicious shitposters.
>>
>>736803779

>>
>>736803721
>enjoy touhou songs
>but not the ones usually inserted in rhythm games
I love the BGM from the games, but they only ever insert vocalic shit like bad apple or cirno's math class which just sounds like generic anime slop
>>
>>736803891
I don't care for attention, I'm saying it how it was
>>
>>736803721

>>
>>736802718
hold notes tend to end up on the effect buttons so there's a much more natural separation between the parts you play with your thumbs vs your index fingers. charts also just have more room to run across the keyboard so you dont end up with as many awkward 2 part melodies

>>

I was using the pinkie finger to do the side tracks up until now but I'll start using the thumbs now. Why? What do these arcade machines have that PC lacks? I've never played one, so genuinely asking.

Is it the sound? I doubt they have better sound than my headset.

Is it the screen? Unlikely since I have an OLED.

Is it the controls? That's just a matter of finding the right peripheral.
