>game has reverse censorship
Crazy
>>736822302It's my wife, Serene!
Riviera thread?
The only instances I know of this is games with more extreme gore in the US compared to Japan.
>>736822302RE4 is a famous example because you can't show dismemberment in Japan.
>>736822302Such a funny process these two scenes have gone through.
>>7368223022000s were a different time
>>736822505I don't know if it was the intent (as she isn't the only character to look different) but the Japanese version of Rayman 2 changed Ly's suit to white, making it obvious that she is wearing one rather than looking like she's naked like in the western versions
>>736822589I'm surprised there were so many unique CGs created for it, maybe more surprising that GBA got so many free tummies and ass crack.
I miss color coded harems.
>>736822589To view these scenes you have to complete the game's toughest QTEs. I know one really puts your button mashing to the test.
>>736822589what about the more recent releases like the steam/switch ports? what CG do they use or are they censored?
>>736822302>>736822589the only explanation for this I can think of is that they got the 2 cg sets switched around by accident during development and no one somehow noticed
>>736824657Twice? Both in GBA and PSP? that's too much of a coincidence.
>>736824657at the time cero was stricter then esrb if your game was some weeb game where most of it is power of friendship and then you hide some sicko shit in a semi-hidden part of the game so nobody actually cared to check. soul nomad is another great example where that game objectively shouldn't have a T rating
>>736824657Things were just different back in Christian America. If you look back at the people who actually censored shit, it was usually a jew, like Saban and Al Kahn.
I think all resident evil games have no gore in japan
>>736824798CERO used to be much more lenient with ecchi scenes. Of course nothing explicit, but panties and cleavage were common. It's only relatively recently that they've become real sticklers for any hint of skin.
>>736822302No fucking way. That's impossible. What game?
>>736822302The JAST version of Rance also had no mosaics
>>736826898Riviera the Promised Land
In Japan, BG3 is censored because of the nudity, the show genitalia option is disabled, even the highest cero rating blocks it.
>>736822505It used to be the other way around
>>736822302I remember them saying they had like four more games planned in this setting but this was the last one.
>>736828229They did release a few Dept. Heaven games after Riviera but the final one they teased was never released
>>736822302I'm really loving this game right now, but can you folks explain to me how you plated this without save states back in the day?>QUEST event three screens in past a cutscenes>Choose poorly>Want to reload>Have to start from the beginning of the level and rewatch the cutscenesThey put VN game mechanics but made reloading a pain.
>>736828416I think the game was intended to be replayable, hence the multiple endings for each of the girls, failable QTEs and missable content, and branching paths in each level. Rather than reloading from a certain state, you're supposed to play the game all over again but choose completely different choices from what you previously made.
>>736827185and everybody wishes the stupid fucks kept them. The uncensored genitals look garbage
>>736822423cute hat!
>>736824560Pretty sure they stick to the Special Edition CGs. >>736828416Sting really liked to put a bunch of dumb secrets in these games that you'd have to keep replaying and doing things a little differently and just hope you stumble across them. As neat as having a gallery for all acquired items to fill out is, there's a lot of event items that are either really obscure to find, or are outright worthless because they're a "reward" for a failed event. Though granted, if you're trying to 100% the game, you're already playing it six times for each ending and their associated CGs.
>>736822302Riviera was a fun game. I love my wife, Lita
>>736822589I thought JP was for the GBA while the later PSP so the original team put through the tasteful CG?
>>736828416It is just ironmode. A concept that western babies had trouble dealing with unless you were the type to play games near their hardest settings. Which was usually Japanese arcade normal mode back then.
>>736830720I remember having to keep a copy of the first staff in the game in your inventory until Cierra joins so you can see her overdrive attack with it, otherwise you can't get one of it by the time she's in the party.
>>736831294Cierra would end up a bit above the curve if you actually tried to do that if you trained her. For collection purposes, you have to preserve as many weapons/items until you get her.Yes, even that 1 use Rosier.
>>736832615NTA but saving items and grinding the practice mode to level up characters was my favorite aspect of Riviera. Just like they streamlined item management in Yggdra Union (steam) by letting you swap items without penalty between maps (you still consume them but you do not have to let them expire to equip another) what QOL changed did they implement for Riviera? They were making a big deal about that "remake" in the social media.
>>736832818I didn't play the steam version but I heard about a 99 item mode and hard mode.
>>736822589What did the Wonderswan Color version look like?
>>736831294That reminds me, like the second time I tried to play, I collected a bunch of items during the tutorial so when I was supposed to be given the starting weapons when Fia and Lina join, my inventory was too full and I just didn't get the staff, then as I kept playing I kept missing items because I never threw out or completely used a lot of the basic/trash items the game throws at you. Ended up being massive underleveled and running out of weapons which essentially softlocked me. I get that inventory management is a core part of the game but it didn't feel fun being punished for holding on to shit "just in case" because I didn't have preemptive knowledge on when I would be able to get those good weapons. Had to unlearn those hoarding instincts that a lot of RPGs don't punish you for.>>736832818IIRC the remake has a massively expanded inventory which trivializes the challenge of the game.
>>736833093>Had to unlearn those hoarding instincts that a lot of RPGs don't punish you for. This actually makes it harder if you're aiming for Fia's ending. Most key items that unlocks stuff in extra options are ones that subtracts Fia's affection from what I've observed. First time players might have to give up on her if you're after unlocking extra stuffs.
>>736824798don't you have to report what's actually possibly raising the age rating to the ESRB? Isn't that how Rockstar got in trouble for hot coffee?
>>736833079It looked pretty similar to the GBA version supposedlyThe Wonderswan consoles were direct competitors to the Gameboy but they were only released in Japan
>>736824798>>736833371Riviera has a T rating which seems to fit what's in the game (I don't remember what could be considered "use of drugs" though). Since there are no bare nipples or pussy and nothing explicitly sexual I guess that saved it from the M/A rating. But even if what was in the game would violate any rating system, I don't think any back then cared enough for an obscure GBA/PSP JRPG. Maybe some parents would've gotten mad if they saw the bath CG or the Cierra facesitting dialogue on the TV screen from a regular console but I doubt any parents were looking over little Timmy's shoulder the entire time he was playing on his handheld with a tiny screen.
>>736833708Taking potions counts as "use of drugs".
>>736833079I forgot about that one when I made that image years ago. Here you go.
>>736834875sovl, reminds me a bit of PC-98 art
>>736827185It's originally a Manga Gamer release. But yeah, the typical trend for English releases of eroge is that they don't have mosaic censorship, the ones that still have them are a rarity, and generally just happened because original devs lost the assets.

>>736824889Cathopedos were always pro censorship on loli stuff, only the pope and the local priest is allowed to be a pedophile
>>736833371Hot Coffee wasn't an intended part of the game, but it was stupid because you could only access it through a mod, but the game is rated M anyway and the minigame wasn't even that explicit either, but everyone freaked out.Another thing was TES Oblivion was supposed to be rated T, but it was discovered that characters had detailed nakedness under their clothes for some reason that also needed a mod to see and it received an adjusted M rating because of it.
>>736828724>The uncensored genitals look garbageI have no idea if pic related is real or not but it was the first thing that popped into my head.
>>736822480Is the steam version of Riviera censored?
>>736822703kys bugman
>>736839162I've seen some footage of Summer Days and it just seems like 0verflow's animation and art are just not good in general.
>>736839201Supposedly, it uses the JP special edition CG. Emulating the GBA or PSP versions is probably the best way to play it irrespective of censorship concerns.>>736822589Even though the nudity is hot, I like how they look in the bikinis, wish there was more art of it
>>736839050For Oblivion, it was the Dark Brotherhood quests and Lucien Lachance's corpse and other depictions of gore/dismemberment. ESRB was pretty loose in its inspections back then.
>>736839162I can confirm that's real. The thing is, these games were originally made with assumption that they'd be only sold in Japan... where uncensored porn is illegal, so many devs figured that nobody would ever see what was under the mosaics. So it was pretty common practice for artists to half-ass the art before it gets censored. Though there are exceptions, with artists putting in effort to stuff that nobody would ever see.Source: I used to work on image editing side of eroge localization several years back, and how it generally worked was that we'd get the PSD/SAI files from Japan, and we'd then have to build up the CGs back piece by piece.
>>736839358>Though there are exceptions, with artists putting in effort to stuff that nobody would ever see.I always appreciate those artists that actually go through the effort of putting in the details. That takes commitment and a little hope on their part that, one day, people will get to see the stuff behind the mosiac.
>>736840147One artist that consistently drew really nice genitals was Shigeo Hamashima from Clockup. I don't really remember who worked on Da Capo 3 from Circus, but that had some really terrible looking dicks and pussies.
>>736828229Dept Heaven made great super weird games, but it's really hard to build an audience when you're making games that are wildly different.I also think they made an Yggdra Union sequel for like... Nokia or sth.
>>736822423
>>736822302Woah... even the child?
>>736843570Cute boy
>>736822302For me, it was Cierra
>>736822302Why was america so... based...
>>736828370Is Yggdra union actually a sequel of Riviera? Should I go back and play Riviera before playing Yggdra?
>>736845309Not really a sequel, they are loosely connected if only you dig deep into backstory.
>>736832818Steam version comes with a lot of cheat options. 99 inventory, fast item mastery, etc.
>>736845309Not a sequel but they take place in the same universe. Same with Knights in the Nightmare. You can actually go to Heaven's Gate in Yggdra Unionhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJlPGuhC4vchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=663OyoedCawThis is making me want another Dept. Heaven game
>>736845309Yggdra is chronologically first in the entire series.
