Once he actually got power though he became insane/psycho and decided he was going to summon an army of demons and genocide the whole world, rather than engage in mundane conquest. This is probably them forcing the Demise connection too hard and losing the fact that Ganondorf is supposed to be his own separate person, and not just a reincarnated Demise the way Zelda is to Hylia.
