new to jrpg, is this a good starting point?
yeah
>>736827946play girthbound instead
>>736827946The game is fun without any experience with JRPGs but it's better if you have played JRPGs before it since it kinda makes fun of some of the tropes of the genre.Something like Dragon Quest 3 or some Final Fantasy game would probably be a better start
>>736828242it doesn't make fun of shit, it just has a different setting than your typical fantasy rpg
Kind of. It's an extremely orthodox, old-school, retro, insert other adjective for something old, ancient as fuck JRPG. They literally don't make em like this anymore and it's because most don't have the patience required to play.
>>736827946>>736827971>>736828084>>736828242>>736828928>>736829120no
>>736827946not especially but it's not like being unfamiliar with the genre will ruin the game or anything
>>736828242>38-bit JRPGs are a bad starting point.
>>736829173your gay
>>736829250i just want to get the genre and rpg in general, i'm still trying to understand how turn based combat works and stuff like this
>>736827946>>736829515play paper mario instead, perfect babby's first jrpg
If you want babby's first rpg, paper mario or one of the other mario rpgs. other nintendo rpgs like pokemon or golden sun good too.If you want something with a bit more meat than that, chrono trigger. DQ3-HD or FF6 would be fine too, or DQ11.But if Earthbound is what appeals to you then just play it. just playing what you feel like playing is better than trying to find the exact perfect ideal game to play first imo.
>>736827946It's pretty awful as an RPG and it's hard carried by le quirky dialogue, so no.Go play FF5 or DQ4 or Chrono Trigger instead
>>736829515the best way to learn is to play a game that appeals to you on some level, whether it's the story, setting, character designs, or all of the above. that way you actually get engaged with the game and feel motivated to learn. my first jrpg other than Pokemon was Etrian Odyssey, which is considered among the tougher games in the genre. but I got drawn in by the map making, the music etc. so I stuck it out even when I was getting my ass kicked at first.
>>736830167>ff5sucks>dq4sucks>chrono triggeroverrated
>>736830252And yet, they are still better than Earthbound
>>736827946It's a solid entry point. If you're wanting something else that's more of the stereotypical fantasy adventure with a group of niggas, Lufia 2 is another good choice. Don't play 1 first, as the opening spoils the absolute fuck out of 2's ending.
>>736827946Super Mario RPG was designed around the player having no prior JRPG experience, hands down the best starting point.
>>736827946Earthbound's UI is pretty clunky even for its time
>>736828242I like Earthbound and didn't like Final Fantasy
>>736832034i've never quite understood this complaint - yes, limited inventory space and no separation of key items is a little unpleasant, but the actual in-combat menuing is far simpler and snappier than its contemporaries. magic is organized sensibly, enemy selection is clear, damage and statuses are readily apparent, misinputs can be cancelled in a single click; it's much more satisfying to play than e.g. ff6
>>736827946Has some of the worst pacing of any RPG, play ff7 instead.
>>736827946Earthbound is a bit advanced for your level. I suggest starting with Undertale.
>>736834047>has some of the worst pacing>recommends a game that is 90% cutscenes, set pieces, and random encounters
>>736827946start with a Final Fantasy game
>>736834719>defending earthbounds pacinglol
>>736827946if you want an SNES RPG for someone knew to the genre, I'd highly recommend super mario rpg>very short, about 10-20 hours>combat is simple>don't have to worry about grinding
>>736827946earthbound is one of if not the best rpg ever made, start with it and finish with it. ignore all other posters
>>736827946no, og ff7 is
>>736836930cosignedif you're really curious after earthbound to play 1 and 3 they're not bad either.
>>736827946>is this a good starting point?Probably not no.>>736829274Crystalis, Final Fantasy 3, Radia Senki, Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden, Esper Dream 2, Lagrange Point, Sweet Home and Faxanadu are all excellent games.
id start with persona 5
>>736827946pretty decent but it has weird difficulty spikes here and there, especially in the earlier half of the gameunfortunately the rolling health bar is too kino of a mechanic and every other rpg will feel lesser since they don't have it
>>736827946very funny anon
>>736827946yeah!
>>736827946Yes. stand behind the waterfall next to saturn valley
>>736828242>it kinda makes fun of some of the tropes of the genre.Where does this idea come from? Is the only humor some people understand meta humor?
>>736827946Just so you know, you're starting with the peak of the genre
>>736833295the rolling hp is a bit weird to get used to but its neat, the inventory is the biggest issue with earthbound imo
>>736844556The only blatant part where Earthbound does this is the whole Dungeon Man section.I guess the fact that NPCs just speak in shitpost dialogue and don't say ANYTHING useful is also a sort of meta joke, since in most JRPGs, you would expect random NPCs to tell you where to go next. But that might be a bit of a stretch.Overall the meta parody aspect of the game is vastly overstated.
