Will Dawn of War 4 bring back the RTS genre from the dead?

I wonder how the devs feel

No matter how good DoW4 is, it's just become a minor stopgap until we all play Total War 40k

Must be so fucking demoralizing to see your game become irrelevant before it even comes out

They're completely different games. There might be some overlap, but they also have different audiences.

They really aren't. At their core they're pretty similar and TW has the advantage of having more depth due to its strategic layer and long-form style campaign and we're not even getting into how much easier it is to do things like expansions as the sandbox nature of its campaign makes it easy to just slot new things in.

DoW is crippled by needing to be simple and easy enough to finish games in a 20-30 minute session. While on paper this is good for capturing a more casual market in reality this will likely only hurt it since TW has the benefit of being much larger scale and the easy difficulty levels in single player hold your hand enough to make it fun for casual audiences.

It's honestly crazy how many people got brought in by the warhammer fantasy games from the casual audience and none of them really have any desire to go back to the more traditional arena style RTS.

DoW really is a cursed franchise.

>>
>>736845010
>At their core they're pretty similar and TW has the advantage of having more depth due to its strategic layer
Dawn of War has base building (1 & 3), TW does not. That alone is already enough to not only set it apart gameplay-wise but to also make it stands out.

Totally different gameplay. But it's great both are being made so people can pick the one they like.
I've never been into Total War games, but always liked RTS and played the shit out of Dawn of War 1.
Dawn of War 4 is the only game I'm looking forward to even though I think picking mechanicus as one of the starting factions was a poor choice.

It's xbox/ps5 game, consoles are much more restrictive when it comes to gore and blood... so if CA says that there will be no more blood packs, I believe them, they simply won't add any gore to it or limit it to bare minimum (and Star Wars fans will love it!).

>>736845731
The base building in DoW is so shallow it may as well not even exist. It effectively exists to be an exercise in route memorization and the things that are siituationally, defensive structures, aren't good enough to justify spending the resources on when fighting anything other than the lowest difficulty CPUs.

You're actually throwing the game in multiplayer if you spend time and resources on those instead of troops to harass your opponents with.

>>
>>736843818
Same. They launched a bunch of closed Alpha tests then went radio silence after talking about feedback they got, so they're slowing down to try and fix whatever people's complaints were (mostly desync'd animations and making the game closer to DoW1 play speed from what I have heard) so I am optimistic it will be a fun game by the time it launches.

Only in social media, GW only cares about sales and Chaos Marines outsells most Xenos factions combined, and any of them individually. Regular space marines still outsell everyone else with ease. The setting exists for space marines to fight each other and everything else is just a distraction.

This is blatantly false and ironically enough screams of only interacting with 40k secondaries on social media. Especially Undivided CSM struggle. By now Nids overtook Death Guard.

Everyone has some Marines, since they are free entry faction, alongside other armies

>>
I hope single player has randomly generated missions.
>>
>>736849817
that list proves him ovwrwhelmingly correct though?
>>
>>736850187
Nope
Undivided CSM struggle and CSM as a whole are carried by a separate army of Death Guard which got massively boosted by 8th Starter Set
Necrons and Nids were always extremely popular and more so than CSM for a long time already.
Orks will be boosted further by 11th starter

Aside from that, there was never before more love put into smaller factions and Xenos. DoWkiddie era 40k is all muhreens. Nowadays GW keeps making new factions and expanding random stuff like fucking Kroot even and that's exactly what fanbase wants. By the time of TW:40K there will be Dark Admech and Exodites as well.

Talking about CSM bias in particular is funny. Out of 4 DoW games only first game had them in a base game.

We already know all of this
It's a new engine with destruction and customization never seen before. You can level down entire map, open pathways on a map or on the contrary block them out with falling debris, which will damage units it crushes
There are both premade (like 500 Worlds/Maelstorm/Eye of Terror/Armageddon right now) and generated systems
Planets function like TWs did since Rome 1 with regions
Space between planets is a sea
You can play a massive IE sized campaign in a system with 10 planets, fight for a single planet or just take part in a single battle. All of them will influence your faction on AoW Planetfall style Empire mode.
You can make your faction like in AoW selecting traits and customizing units which can have varied gear within a single squad

TWW3 is just a prototype/backported sloppy seconds from TW:40K. Daniel customization. Sieges having points to capture and constructing buildings midbattle. Domination gamemode/survival battles with constantly pouring in reinforcements. Directional armor system which suddenly showed up. All those gimmicky hordes from Ogres to Changeling to Aislinn to Chaos Warriors all being prototypes for factions like Space Marines and Eldar. etc

TW40k is a Chapter Master + DoW Dark Crusade/Soulstorm

>>
>>736851239
Honestly I forgot darktide existed. I barely remembered that Space Marine 2 had tyranids, I was gonna call that out too. I guess I entered this thread with strategies in mind.
>>
>>736849817
Necrons, Nids, and DG are only high only the list because they came with thw recent Start Sets that every Marine player buys, and is the set that GW themselves constantly shill to new players. Their popularity is mostly artificial because most of the time it's Marine players not being able to sell the non-Marine half of the starter and opting to simply take in that faction because they nowchave a decent starting point.
They are not popular by their own merit.
>>
>>736851215
Darktide, Vermintide 2, Chaos Gate, Boltgun, will get more dlcs in TWW, unlike other Monogods.
>>
Another COH clone, wasted potential.
>>
>>736851376
Yes, and?
That's the very strength of 40k. Each starter set is by default interesting to every single 40k players since all of them have some Marines. Then Marinefags are forced to pay for Xeno/Chaos half anyway and are either stuck with it thus starting 2nd army or it's their problem to sell that half, while GW already got their money. This also floods second hand market with cheaper minis of an adversary faction, further boosting their popularity. This is why it's so important to have posterboy faction and why GW wanted Fantasy/AoS to also have faction like this. It lets GW boost popularity of other factions, because it's in their best interest for people to start as many factions as it is possible.

Now Orks will be even more popular with cross shilling of DoW4, TWW40K and 11th Edition, while CSM will be even less relevant.
>>
>>736837978
Nah, might still be fun though.
>>
>>736851737
The problem with your line of thought is the assumption that GW doesn't take this false-popularity into account and believes non-Marine factions are popular.
GW knows all this. They know Marine fans will buy anything. They also know 90% of the modern fanbase only cares about Marines.
GW doesn't put factions in the Starter Sets to boost those factions, they do it based upon what they think makes the Marines look good. There's a reason Tau and Eldar have never been in a starter set; They aren't immediately evil in the eyes of new players, thus they detract from the 'good guy' imagery that GW wants Marines to have.
Orks and Nids and Necrons aren't put in starters because GW wants them to be popular, they're put there to make Marines look cooler. If those factions get a boost then it's little more than a happy side effect for GW, since Marines are what matter.

RTS is not dead. RTS games are still released. It's only "dead" because AAA companies refuse to take risks and don't understand that the future of the genre does not lie in multiplayer and e-sports. Nor in listening to those competitive e-sports dolts.
>>736838207
Give it a break. 3rd and 4th EDs may have been THE BEST (also you are a damn heretic for not including 4th), but up to 7th ED it was all still 40K.

>RTS is not dead. RTS games are still released. It's only "dead" because AAA companies refuse to take risks and don't understand that the future of the genre does not lie in multiplayer and e-sports. Nor in listening to those competitive e-sports dolts.
The genre is dead in the sense that no good games have been released this decade.
>>
>>736854849
Still isn't dead. Even if no RTS games got released this year.
>>
>>736854216
>GW doesn't put factions in the Starter Sets to boost those factions, they do it based upon what they think makes the Marines look good.
This is where you are wrong. They want for all armies to be popular. This is why they keep releasing even completely niche and random stuff like Kroot or reimagine and bring back old factions like Squats, Genestealers or even make new ones like Admech
They can afford experimentation now and so they do it.
>There's a reason Tau and Eldar have never been in a starter set; They aren't immediately evil in the eyes of new players, thus they detract from the 'good guy' imagery that GW wants Marines to have.
Having good vs evil scenario in a starter set for marketing purposes doesn't mean that they only care about Marines. Good guy spot simply always has to be occupied by them, since they are posterboys everyone has. Otherwise gimmick doesn't work.
>Orks and Nids and Necrons aren't put in starters because GW wants them to be popular, they're put there to make Marines look cooler. If those factions get a boost then it's little more than a happy side effect for GW, since Marines are what matter.
They are in starters explicitly for this very reason. Otherwise every starter would be against this same enemy

RTS games have no replay value save for MP. It's their only saving grace, otherwise people uninstall them the second they finish linear cinematic campaigns. All of the recent attempts at saving RTS did so with linear singleplayer campaigns because breaching AoE/Starcraft/CoH hold is impossible. And all of them died, from Homeworld to Iron Harvest.
>>736854731
>You should've written 40k post-7th ED because after 7th is where everything went down the drain.

Only thing that matters is a concurrent playerbase of a constantly living games. Any games that do not meet this criteria are dead. And in case of RTS it means everything aside from Starcraft/CoH/AoE.

You do not play Warcraft every day like it's done with TWW. Nobody does it, because linear cinematic campaigns RTS are known for do not have ANY replay value, unlike sandbox grand campaigns of Total War/Paradox games. The only, sole replay value RTS games have is in multiplayer. And no other RTS game will manage to have it's multiplayer successful since this spot is already occupied.

>>736855586
Primaris are the very savior of GW and it's explicitly of their success that GW can experiment with other factions and other games now. Like making Kroot and Eldar Corsair expansions, various subfactions for every faction, create Genestealers/Votann/Admech armies, soon Exodites and Darkadmech or make side games like The Old World bringing back WHFB back. It's only because of Primaris all of this happened, they pay for this all. With a help of contrast paints.

Fuck no. Kroot and Eldar Corsair as their own thing were always valid material and if I remember correctly people wanted those since forever. Same with Exodites.
From the lore to the majority of their models, you will never convince me that Primaris are a good addition. Would've accepted the size changes if they said that the Emperor left something for Space Marines in case everything goes tits-up. Something that would unleash their true potential. And instead we get some tech-priest that seemingly appeared out of nowhere and made the Primarchs and Emps look like idiots, casually brings back tech that is either forgotten or in limited amounts back to wider use and seemingly got the green light to "upgrade" what worked well for over 10K.
Give me a fucking break. Not to mention, again as I said earlier, most of their units are retarded due to feeling too clean and tacticool. You know which ones I'm talking here.

And no, WHFB can't come back as long as this abortion that is AoS exists. If GW were to ET AoS and go back to WHFB, then it would mean that they were horribly wrong about torching the franchise. And now they are combining all the realms and making it into WHFB 2.0. What a clusterfuck.

Anyone defending GW's decisions are either an ignoramus, a paid shill or both and I have enough of this drivel.

>Fuck no. Kroot and Eldar Corsair as their own thing were always valid material and if I remember correctly people wanted those since forever. Same with Exodites.
They wouldn't exists if not for Primaris. Only reason GW could afford to experiment with them is because Primaris sell like hotcakes.

Primaris are explicitly in line with setting and are an old tech from older, better era coming back. Unlike new developments like MK8. They also look like Knights now, each of their troops carrying plethora of gothic bits, while previous mostly mk7 tactical kit only had tacticool pouches and a handful of ultramarine roman themed bits.

Only Phobos configuration, the one explicitly designed to pander to fans of MK7&8 with tacticool pouches and darth vader helmets, is not as knightly as the rest of Primaris

>TW has the advantage of having more depth due to its strategic layer and long-form style campaign
it's actually the complete opposite. the strategic and tactical layers of tw do nothing but sabotage each other. if you want to play fun battles the strategic layer fucks you up by encouraging you to only take one sided fights and making retarded army compositions based around lord skills. if you just want to map paint the campaign ai will spam you with battles that you will auto resolve 90% of the time and the other 10% will be fights you have no business winning but you need to win anyway so you sit in the corner like a faggot and cheese the retarded ai.

>i fear dow 4 will have the same weightless starcraft 2 movement
We differ in that opinion. I don't think SC2's movement is weightless at all. It has by far the best unit movement system in all of RTS. Say all you want about the story and gameplay, but its army control was clean with lots of quality-of-life features. Unit collision gets dynamically disabled whenever it needs to be (a huge problem in DOW). It had a unique system which allowed certain units to scale over impassable terrains. Buildings can be lifted off or be buried underground for repositioning or ease of passage... I really do think that out of all RTS, SC2 is the most movement-conscious which was very soothing to my OCD-addled brain

Pity characters are named as such because they do not matter
Chapter agnostic generic marines didn't get shit since release of 10th Edition
Other than those you have an awful Blood Angel release, some units for DAngels and Space Wolves which are the only liked ones (but Kroot got more stuff than furries anyway lol)
Ultramarines are always cucked since they only get named characters so a worthless generic HQ which GW will stop producing anyway

relic was already going to shit before DoW3, but DoW3 certainly revealed just how bad it got
>>
>>736873042
No.
It's important to note that the Relic who made DoW3 is not the same Relic that made DoW1 and DoW2. The original Relic was heavily tied to THQ, who acted as publisher for most Relic games. When THQ went bankrupt, Relic closed down and the studio contracts were put up for sale.
This is were Sega came in, purchasing Relic and its associated franchises and licenses. DoW3 was the title with the most work done, so it was the first project that the new Relic was delegated to work on. It was not expected to be a great success, and instead was used to orient the revived studio for future work, as they had already secured the contract for Age of Empires 4 and had the new Company of Heroes in early development.
In essence, DoW3 was a low budget title they could afford to lose on.

Total War has developed quite a following of normies and CA's battered housewife fandom but given it's being put on console and they're really leaning into the Sandbox nature of the game, I really don't have high hopes for it's performance. I'm personally much more interested in DoW4 because I haven't invested time into a more traditional RTS in over a decade and it seems like a good opportunity to pick one up. I just hope it's campaigns are good. I have mixed feelings about the Dark Angels making an appearance.

Educate yourself
https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/cvvjq1ua/las-canon-how-the-astra-militarums-indomitable-lasgun-works/

Starting in Dec 2024, all lasguns are forced by Games Workshop to be depicted as shooting projectiles instead of beams.
Darktide, Rogue Trader, and Space Marine all came out before then.

Dwan of War 4 (pic related) and Total War 40k both have them shooting projectiles.
Every official animation since then now shows them as shooting projectiles.

No, it's not. It's a complete fabrication.

sure

"Their depiction has been remarkably consistent: they fire discrete, pale white-yellow bolts, not visually dissimilar to the tracers of the hard-round guns they replaced. You can see that lasguns do have a type of muzzle flare – not a flame like gunpowder weapons, but more a flash of light. More recently, we’ve also started to see them pop up on our TV screens and gaming devices with varying examples of what they look and sound like in action. "

This of course is not true at all. Not a single piece of official art anywhere prior to this game and article has ever shown them shooting projectiles. They've been drawn shooting beams, a muzzle flash with no beam, or both, but they have never, ever been shown shooting solid projectiles.

If you want an actual schizo theory, I personally believe that GW is trying to retcon it as a big "fuck you" to everyone who depicted the lasgun prior to all of the rebranding they've been doing.
>they're not imperial guard, they're ASTRA MILITARUM and they shoot blaster bullets, it's our own iconic 100% original depiction that nobody else came up with

I still don't get it. What exactly are you disputing here? Is it literally just because of the use of the word "Bolt"? Even the final sentence acknowledges they've been depicted numerous different ways over the years. GW is hardly known for consistency in these sorts of things.

>Laughably overpowered centerpiece monsters a la Lion. The devs said Lion would just be Campaign only, don't fucking believe them in the slightest. GW will want Primarchs EVERYWHERE.
>Melee is dogshit and any army focusing on it will get turned into swiss cheese.

>I still don't get it. What exactly are you disputing here?
I am disputing the fact that the LASER GUNS have """always""" shot projectiles instead of LASER BEAMS.
They have never shot bolts.

I do not think I could possibly have been more clear but I'll summarize:
Lasguns, and by extension all las weaponry, are laser weapons. They shoot lasers.
Projectiles resembling tracer rounds are not lasers. By definition a hard projectile that has to spend a visually significant amount of time traveling downrange is not a laser, it is some kind of energy bolt.
>Even the final sentence acknowledges they've been depicted numerous different ways over the years.
Yes, and the point of the article is to clarify it once and for all what they do. Literally all official 40k media following this article has been mandated, as per the words of the Battlesector devs who are mentioned in this article, that going forward are to portray las weapons as shooting solid projectiles.

All available lore describes them as laser weapons that shoot laser beams.
Every splatbook describes them as shooting laser beams.

They have literally never shot projectiles.
Once again:
GAMES WORKSHOP IS NOW MANDATING THAT *ALL* DEPICTIONS OF LAS WEAPONRY GOING FORWARD FROM DECEMBER 2024 SHOOTS PROJECTILES, CONSISTENTLY
WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND
>>
>>736880108
>The devs said Lion would just be Campaign only, don't fucking believe them in the slightest
I don't see why not. They seem to have a pretty level headed approach, even siloing the unit balance of multiplayer and campaign so that one is competitive and the other is fun and thematic.

I don't really understand why you think this matters or has any permanence. They'll change it back at the the moment they think it's preferable that lasguns act like lasers. Which will probably be whatever next big game that has them depicted that way does.
>>
>>736880306
>I don't see why not
Because 'fans' will beg to have Lion and eventually Roboute be in multiplayer, and the Daemon Primarchs are the major centerpieces of their respective factions (and in some cases are the only unit holding them together), which will just let the devs go ahead and include the loyalists in turn.
