Is it just me or over/under double barrel
shotguns are kind of rare? It's always side-by-side and usually sawed-off.

I would imagine that it's mainly because side-by-sides look cooler. But side-by-sides are also arguably more practical than over-and-unders when it comes to hunting so it does make some sense that they're a more common sight in videogames.

When it comes to double-barrels, I've always slightly preferred the look of over/unders more. Like >>736847194 said though it's probably just because it's more recognisable as a shotgun to most players due to its simplicity and ubiquity
I'll never say no to a good shotgun though

Don't even have to go that far. They could be the same gauge and even then it would still make sense. I don't think people grasp how much gas is lost in cycling the gun. There is a reason people still like break actions to this day for their actual use and not just for their looks. When you're shooting at something 100m out in the sky as it's flying, velocity matters a lot.

That's a good thing because I like the pumping animation and sound + hearing the spent shell hitting the ground and rolling, so that way I can still use it later in the game.
Upgrade paths for weapons in vidya should always exist in the same category, I don't want to switch to some fancy lazer gizmo or some gay alien gun late game because it does more damage. Give me a .38 snubnose early game and a Colt Anaconda late game.

I think he meant the practicality of it in a combat situation. Why use a double barrel when you could have a pump action or semi-auto shotgun in the same gauge that's probably the same size overall but with a bigger magazine size?
And then there's the fact that shotguns themselves just aren't that practical against other humans in combat scenarios compared to rifles. The rise of drone warfare may change this in the future, but I'm a bit skeptical on that when some groups in Ukraine focused on making special multi-shot rounds for their rifles instead of using shotguns.

That's why I put the comp on my edc. I increased the damage but lost maneuverability and have more sway. I have to make my shots count.
