Does Professor Layton have a fanbase?
I see the series on "top DS games" list all the time but rarely see people talking about them.
I tried the first game multiple times but never make it far because the story is really boring.
>>
There's not really much to talk about.
Like you said, the stories are incredibly barebones and just there to have an excuse for the 'puzzles' to exist.
And it has zero replayability unless you give yourself brain damage and forget all of the solutions.
>>
I don't understand this mindset where games need to be constantly discussed.
>>
hard to have a fanbase when you haven't had a game in 15 years

I think all the other layton games have quaint little stories and likable characters but village really is boring. I like Layton for the puzzles, vibes and stories (not as mysteries, more as narratives)

I see the appeal in a simple puzzle game, especially in the DS era when you're out and about but have some downtime to solve a quick puzzle or two.
What confuses me is that this franchise is still going long after handheld consoles have died, and not as a mobile game but as a home console release where it loses that easy time-killer appeal.
It makes me wonder, are people really attached to this franchise? Have fans been clamoring for more sequels?

There is a new entry coming out this year, and there was a spinoff released in 2017 for the 3DS and ported to the Switch in 2019.

the spinoff was ass and this new game still doesn't have a solid release date

I wouldn't know, I haven't played any of the games past the Curious Village. I'm just saying there's enough interest that they're still making Professor Layton games.

I've only played the ones available on android, loved them to bits. Reminds me of stuff like Tintim in aesthetics, the characters and dialogue are great. The puzzles are fun but I play them more for the adventure. I do appreciate how the puzzles are part of the game's world, people just love puzzles, it's not a hard break from the story.
There isn't much to continuously discuss and obsess about, I'm playing the new one as soon as it's out on Steam, really glad it's coming out on PC, but I don't wanna theorize about anything, I just want to play it.

I don't see why puzzle games have to be limited to handheld scope.
I played talos 2 a couple years ago, that game was over 100gb and my pc could barely run it.
Yet in a sense this game isn't structured too differently from something like Layton. You move around solving (mostly) self-contained puzzles. All this is driven by a narrative.
>>

Yeah but it hasn't come out yet
We're still waiting

I haven't played Talos Principle 1 or 2 but from what I've heard those games have far more engaging narratives while Professor Layton's is forgettable.

To me, coming home after work to play Professor Layton seems like wasting hours on your weekend playing sudoku puzzles when you could be reading a great book or something instead.
It's the kind of thing that only makes sense to me as a time killer for lack of better options. This is why I think it was so successful on the DS and 3DS.
Professor Layton doesn't demand a lot of time and it's easy to get into a quick puzzle while you're bored at work or are waiting for an appointment.

I never finished 1 but there really isn't that much plot in 2, though there's a decent amount of lore but that's all optional.

laytonbros, how come we are so based?

The stories are pretty shit. They pretend to be mysteries but they give you no actual bread crumbs on how to solve them and it ends up being some batshit insane thing nobody would guess.

I've played 3 different Professor Layton games but pic related is the only one I've finished. Absolutely loved it and the story does give you some feels in the end. It's a shame they haven't released a collection of the old games

If the games were rereleased and compiled as often as the Ace Attorney games are, there'd be new generations of fans

PL is one of the series where I played the first game when it came out and really enjoyed it but never had interest in the other games. Same with Prince of Persia and Deadrising.
>>
The stories are always garbage but the first three do have good puzzles in them, which is what I care about
>>
>>736869687
They REALLY should do that since they're already bringing the new one to non-Nintendo platforms.

The Katrielle game made me so angry I don't ever want another game like it. Even the best ones basically have an excuse plot where you need to ignore what's happening in the plot because you just want more puzzles. They're not very hard. You can use hint coins to get through a puzzle or just keep guessing until you stumble upon the right answer. Still, most puzzles are fun to solve, and you should only use that extra help after you've tried and failed to figure out the answer.

adhd becoming the New Normal means if a topic isn't mentioned for a while it must mean it's worthless
