Why was the Wii U era so bad?
It was kino
>>736886845The one thing I miss is that being a Nintendo fan back then was like a suffering cult. It was quite surreal. Switch era just got flooded by normalfags and "dadgamers". Completely lost the derranged schizo shit you would see from Miiverse users. Nintendo hasn't felt the same since
>>736886845i have never met anyone who misses the wii u ever
>>736886845The WiiU was such a terrible console that Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the 3DS had a higher framerate than it did on the WiiU.
>>736887065
>>736886845Nintendo spent the Wii years rolling in money and ignoring every warning sign, their dev teams also had basically no experience on HD development. It was a perfect storm.
wii u was weaker than xbox 360
>>736887118Nintendo thought this was a good charger for a controller
>Third party support TANKED after the initial half hearted effort >Nintendo was at their most out of touch with what their consumerbase wanted>So many games felt like 'filler' that lead up to nothing, droughts were frequent>Gamepad was underutilized by devs, best used as a map/inventory screen>BoTW did not use the gamepad at all, functionality very obviously stripped for Switch version parity.
>>736887072Only if you disabled 3D but yeah
>>736887210I hate having to drag this thing out every time because the gamepad battery sucks now
>>736886845Are we so bored that we have to recycle threads from 3 days ago?
>>736886942Pretty much this. I remember when 2016 came around and Nintendo fans for begging for ANYTHING interesting, and there were only 4 (four) games released by Nintendo (Star Fox Zero, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Paper Mario Color Splash, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash). All of those games ended up being ass and BotW got delayed to being a Switch launch title. Absolute worst year to be a Nintendo fan.
>>736887326 if you can get one easily go get it, same with the battery just to have a replacement laying around, I had a hard time getting one around here
>>736886845is cemu dead?
>a negative nintendo threadDEFENSE FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORCEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!ASSEMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>736887214if only there was a way at the time to like, implement all those "new" "features" in a convenient way, without having to rely on a giant ass controller for everything, maybe connected through bluetooth and something you already had at home that only required an app.
>wait, you mean we CAN'T just release New Super Mario Bros over and over, even poisoning 3D Mario with its slop, and still be successful?
>>736886845The Wii U was a joke and people talked about Nintendo like they were going to go out of business and we'd see Mario on Playstation. Only the most devoted tendies bought one.
I got the ZombiU bundle and it came with a cool metal base that works with any other device and I still use it to this day.
>>736887507Crazy how the Switch came out less than a year after Starfox Zero.
Because they didn't use their technology properly. A dual screen setup where I could watch youtube on the controller screen and play the game on the tv would have been a lot of fun, scrolling through apps, the internet and such while playing games. You couldn't do much with the controller screen, so it was mostly a waste. No crossplay and sorta underpowered as the years went by, so why wouldn't you buy a playstation/xbox or save for a pc? It made little sense for the average player
>confused people out the door by only showing the controller and barely changing the logo (even Sony changes the Playstation logo each gen)>central gimmick is shit to boot; constantly dividing your attention between the screen you're holding and the TV gets annoying fast.>the gamepad in general>third-party support was nonexistent even by Nitnendo standards>the same casual audience that made the Wii successful isn't the audience that cares about having better graphics anyway. And then we get to the actual library. The Wii-U had great games but basically nothing that would actually sell the system.>went from Galaxy kino to NSMB 3D; regardless of what your opinions on those games are, the general public is gonna see 3D World and think it's a step back from the grandoise Galaxy games>and also had another NSMB within a year of NSMB2>Zelda got ports of the shitty Gamecube Zeldas which fucked up their artstyles>when it finally got BOTW, it was multiplat with the Switch>only notable Pokemon game was an arena fighter>Mario Kart 8 was good but Mario Kart isn't a system seller>Wooly Yoshi was fine but not a system seller>Star Fox Zero was another retelling of the original with garbage gimmick controls; the worst case of Nintendo forcing pointless gimmick controls where they don't belong>Animal Crossing got Amiibo Festival; enough said>Xenoblade was and is still niche; not a system seller>Tropical Freeze is a great game but it's not a system seller; too similar looking to Returns.>Sm4sh both had the problem of not having the same grandoise as Brawl but was also on 3DS. A worse experience but it was still there.Overall, Nitnendo was stuck sniffing their own farts during that era still thinking they could keep doing what they were doing with the Wii/DS and see the same success instead of adapting to the changing market.
>>736886845Wii U > SwitchAll the popular Switch games were just Wii U ports
>>736888546>>only notable Pokemon game was an arena fighterhey, pokemon rumble u was good... at least... i liked it..
>>736888546>>Mario Kart 8 was good but Mario Kart isn't a system sellerWhat's funny is when the Switch 2 launched for $500 with MK World and tendies were doing around saying it was worth it for that. As if they didn't remember how the Wii U barely sold even with MK8 bundles.
>>736886942>like a suffering cult.Never forget. And no "They had the best presentation" does not make this OK.
>>736888546>Mario Kart 8 was good but Mario Kart isn't a system sellerWrong on both counts.Mario Kart is a system seller, but Mario Kart 8 wasn't good.Mario Kart 8DX was the engoodened version and it sold Switches.
Did we not just have this thread? Same op and all
>>736888546>confused people out the door by only showing the controllerI remember this and I just don't understand why it was so confusing. This wasn't the early 00's people could easily Google or look it up and see what came in the box and what the difference is.
>>736886845It did not have a sandbox 3D Mario. It had everything except that.
>>736887507TMS is a good game marred by the worst fucking localization of all time.
>>736886845The Wii U was of so little consequence it didn't even come with its own era.
>>736888546The casual player base had also moved to mobile games by the time the wii u released
>>736888052>The Wii U was a joke and people talked about Nintendo like they were going to go out of business and we'd see Mario on Playstation.Oh god, I remember those memes. I still have them saved.
>>736888546>even Sony changes the Playstation logo each geneverything you said was true except for this, the ps5 logo is the same as the ps4 logo
>>736889526Nintendo was such a joke back then. People were ready to see them go third party.
>>736886845I have a thousand times more respect for Wii U owners as opposed to Switchlets who joined the social media bandwagon for Smash, Zelda, and especially AC. If you played Nintendoland and Game & Wario you have a genuine care for the Nintendo style design ethos. Yeah the Wii U era had some stinkers but the Switch brought a massive horde of normalsloppers who just want every IP to have an open world RPG reboots. It's pure cancer.
>>736886845>>736886942I'm ngl that is the major appeal of the era, partly with the Wii as well. If you were in games and into Nintendo at the time, you were part of a cult. You're missing a cult, which somehow summoned its God in the Nintendo Switch. It was a fun cult and I also miss it.
>>736889692>People buy Nintendo console for Nintendo games>This is bad somehow
Launch day games were good although the system os was painfully so. Iwata formally apologized for this and they patched it a month or so after launch. Wii U glazers never mention this>Nsmbu>Nintendo land>Sonic racing transformed (exclusive at the time)>ninja gaiden 3 razors edge (exclusive at the time)Then NOTHING for 9 months until pikmin 3, which was actually very good but the damage was done. For context we are currently 9 around months into the Switch 2's life. Newfags who weren't around romanticize the fuck out of the Wii U. It was hellish
>>736886845Pikmin and the Wii series had traditional sequels whereas Mario and Zelda had ports and spinoffs. The latter franchises sell consoles, the former don't. Games such as Mario Odyssey, Zelda BoTW, Mario Tennis Aces and Luigi's Mansion 3 moving to Switch didn't help matters either. Point is the Wii U was always set to fail when the company's restructuring takes the entire console generation and they have to put out cheap spin-offs for their greatest franchises. Hell, Nintendo is having another one right now, and look where the Switch 2 is heading.>>736889692>t. TheBitBlockI get what you mean by Switchlets latching on to core entries, but the reason why they didn't buy a Wii U is because the Wii U never got a traditional Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, etc. Saving them for the Switch was Nintendo's best move.>>736890108Sonic Racing wasn't exclusive, and it ran the game the worst.
Does anyone actually miss the era that gave us shit like amiibo festival and paper jam
It wasn't. I had a real good time with it. I didn't dven mind the controller even though plenty of people did. It reminded md a lot of the dream cast controller which I still have very fond memories with.
>>736888869>worse battle modeNope. Switch sold because it is the switch.
>>736889692I had a mutual friend that kept shitting on the WiiU(he had a 360 and a One) and he kept doing it in front of me for some reason, even one day my friends asked me to take my wiiu to their house and he was there, the WiiU crashed while playing nintendo land and he yelled something like "THAT'S WHY THE WIIU IS SHIT", we all just rolled our eyes at his autism, now, he can't stop posting about his switch purchases.
>>736886845I credit the Wii U era for making so many modern Nintendo fans incredibly defensive and unable to handle criticism well. They were definite drought times and the sales sucked big time. Nintendo was utterly clueless in what direction to move in once all the casual players dried up. First parties were hit or miss though it had some genuinely great exclusives, but releases were infrequent and Wii U owners had to take anything they could get as third party games were nonexistent too. Everything added up to a bad time and a time people really considered the idea of Nintendo moving away from consoles entirely. By the time the Switch rolls around these same people are convinced that the Switch must succeed at all costs for fear of a repeat of those dreaded Wii U days and this fear still lingers in the back of their minds. Now Nintendo seems hellbent on abusing this loyalty to its limit now, and they’ll probably be humbled yet again. Lol>t. Wii U owner
>>736890149It was exclusive for 2 days because it came out on Sunday and the ps360 version came out on Tuesday
>>736886845>I hate wiiu!>Proceeds to buy all wiiu ports on switch
>>736890180artist name?
>>736890328yeah, the console sucked but some games were good
>Nintendo so desperate they kept giving games awayGot several Virtual Console games for gold coins and Pikmin 3.
>>736890221It's funny, isn't it? It's not going to change, since that's how the industry and market have learned to work. Trying to make the outspoken fanatic expect more of the product they're buying is futile, so I think it's better to expect that nintendo will have a couple good games, products and services, and more of the same, if not worse practices the industry is facing
>>736886845The rule is simple:old good, new badIt was bad then, but now that it's old, it's goodIt applies to everything
>>736888968They literally didn't show the actual console at e3 for some fucking reason
>>736886845Splitting the development of games between the 3DS and Wii U was simply retarded. 3DS games were far more intensive than the DS to develop so they ended up splitting their resources on two systems that both ended up having tiny libraries. Games like Luigi’s Mansion and AC:NL should’ve been on the Wii U.
>Wii U had no games and was bad>Wii U games are still being ported now to Switch 2
Wii U fags don't care for the Wii U all that much as they just hate the Switch.Hence their takes on how the Switch only sold well because of the Wii U ports even though they only make up a fraction of its library.
>>736890771>I picked a side, so you must pick one or I'll assign one for you in my mind
>>736890771I think the Wii U ports were essential at filling the gaps in the Switch’s early days to help establish a larger userbase right away than repeating the exact Wii U scenario again. Having a major Zelda, Mario Kart and 3D Mario all in the first year was key to getting people in the door than if they only launched with Odyssey a few months in.
>>736890460Same as it ever was, forever and forever it seems.
I liked my wiiu, but I did get it later in it's life cycle. Can't say I liked the duel screen at most it was a map or an annoying section of the game where you use the motion controls. For Mario kart is was near totally worthless. Thanks Nintendo for a png of a steering wheel for me to tap!
>>736886845I was just entering high school at the time and honestly I loved it. All my friends got Xbones and I was the lone Nintendofag. MK8, WW/TP HD, XBCX, Splatoon, Bayo 2, MH3U, W101, Super Mario World, Tropical Freeze, Smash WiiU/3DS and many more, all really great exclusives. Add to it the virtual console, miiverse, and cool random stuff like the animal crossing plaza, I thought it was great quality. In fact I would venture to say that I have more good memories with the Wii U than the Switch.
>>736886845Ironically Wii U ended up having more exclusives than PS5
I feel like most of the best games of the Switch are WiiU ports. The criticism the WiiU receives is all justified, but it feels like the Switch doesn't get enough criticism in turn.
>>736887207Wii U had high res textures on NFS Most Wanted U doe
>>736886845it should also be noted this was right after the wii era which despite being a huge success also felt similarly stagnant
>>736889526>>736889585Back then I wish this would happen and would be disappointed to see the Switch do so well, but with how gay Sony and Microsoft are nowadays, Nintendo is the only one with some SOVL left, it's good that they didn't die out.
>thing is shit>people unanimously agree that it's shit>years later people that barely had sentience when the thing came out start saying that it wasn't actually shit>discussion about the thing is now plagued with people that blindly defend said thing because of memories associated with it rather than the thing itselfwe really need a term for this
>>736895285>>people unanimously agree that it's shitWhat corner of the internet were you hiding in?
>>736886942>had a Wii U>some alright games, but it wasn't a good system and it never really utilized its gimmick well>Switch comes out>can never seemingly care for it much up to this day, despite the hardware gimmick being something I would've loved and being a better console (minus internet browser)It's a weird kind of feel.
>>736895397>proving my point with one post
>>736886942Miiverse was so damn good man.
>>736886845You mock the WiiU but most of the Switch's first games were just WiiU game ports.
>>736887501Yes. This is the absolute state of neo-nu-/v/.
>>736895712SameI think its because a phone now does everything you hoped a gameboy would do as a kidWhy do I need a switch when I have a modern phone with triple the specs in a smaller footprint?I haven't even turned my switch on in like 3 years
>>736895285...Nostalgia-blindness?
>>736886845name a better zombie game, i'll wait
>>736886845it was a great system but failed because it rode off the coattails of the Wii. It didn't have its own identity and people literally thought it was a part of the Wii, not a new system.
>>736895892It's not just that, people can have nostalgia blindness for things that were good but still dismiss any flaws that it may have. This is much worse than that.
>>736895712Same, I never really cared about the Switch itself, which is kinda weird since almost everyone on /v/ seems to shit themselves over it, I've been called erictranny and snoy multiple times for any criticism despite never even owning a Playstation before. It's even worse because after the Wii U Nintendo seems a lot more scared of taking risks with their gimmicks, the Switch 2 is literally just a carbon copy of Switch 1 with better specs.
>>736886845Cause they die?
>>736895285>years later people that barely had sentience when the thing came out start saying that it wasn't actually shitYoutube keeps recommending me "retrospective" videos that are just one retard with 5000 hours of playtime glazing it for 40 minutes, the funniest part is that you can instantly presume from their voice they just hit puberty. Everyone in the comments is just jacking off each other too, it's ludicrous.
>>736896557Post-Iwata Nintendo certainly has a different attitude, especially with games as smaller ones are not as much of a thing since the 3DS discontinued.>>736895869Sometimes I think about getting ports of indie games I have on Steam that might be good to have portable, but then don't commit since they're probably not going to be as good anyway. Was pissed that BallisticNG cancelled theirs when Unity was acting retarded.
>>736886942This nigga knows
>>736886942this, I missed the unhinged era of Nintendo fans
>>736895285Emulating Nostalgia
>>736895960It has many flaws, clearly uncooked mechanics, but it was one of the few games with Zombies that felt dangerous without resorting to super powered zombies, it had their share of specials but even normal zombies were dangerous, inventory management made sense and permadeath felt natural and fair, the multiplayer was quite fun too. It was a shame that they went with zombies instead or the killer freaks tho, I really liked that 50's scifi style.
>>736895960ridiculous atmosphere, actual hidden gem
>>736886845Nintendo ignored it's existence after it was out for two months.
>>736886845I had a Wii U, it was cute but it just didn't have many games. We had Smash and one of the Zeldas and a couple Mario games and that was basically it. The handheld thing was a cool innovation though.
>>736887927>to use our product, you must buy our competitor's productAnd even if it did work, there would be crying on /v/ about it for weeks.
So am I just supposed to accept all the new arguments of >You only like it cause you weren't there!as a concession or what? I don't care how much it frustrates you, I literally still own my Wii U.
>Wii u was ass>But Ps4 was also ass and had zero games>And xboxwhatever also existed, I guessGuys, pls stop with this cult nonsense and accept that it was just a really dark period for all of vidya.
As a patriotic tendie I skipped the entire Wii U gen and only the most autistic obtuse people got aboard
>>736898235>you must buy our competitor's productExcept everybody and their grandmother has a smartphone at this point, hell the Switch has had a companion app since almost the very beginning.
>>736886942Never forget some niggas wanted to Switch to fail to keep the Nintendo fanbase closed. Maybe they were right but it was inevitable.
>>736889692Probably because it was the last time Nintendo was led by the oldheads like Iwata. Switch might have been his last baby but the business decisions were far away from what he would have done.
>>736895285It was my first Nintendo consoleI grew up with a PS3Wii U was awesome for me because I played all the Wii games, Virtual Console, Nintendo used to give shit away and Miiverse was dope.Switch has no community feeling and zero real backwards comp. Wii U is the better product, but room temperature normalfags love the Switch because you don't have to think.
>>736886845Literally the winner of the gen unless you are a salestranny. Xbone never had games, PS4 only had Bloodborne until FF7R was announced late into its life and that ended on pc anyways. Fuck it still got 3-4 games that don't have even a switch port yet.
lots of wii u seethe threads lately, new schizo just drop?
>>736899150If Iwata was alive, the Switch UI wouldn't be so barebones and would have a free app or two. The Switch 2 is the very first time an Nintendo system doesn't have its own distinct "personality" with it sharing the exact same UI as its predecessor. It's fucking depressing.
>>736899320Yeah I'm actually glad I picked up a Wii U in 2013 I had a lot of casual fun with it. Free online was extremely based and the games were good.
>>736886845it wasnt
>>736899268Anon, Wii U just sucks. It didn't have GameCube compatibility so I kept my Wii for that, and now that everything worthwhile is ported to the Switch, what the fuck is the point? I have the Wii for my Wii and GameCube titles, and the Switch for everything that I played on the Wii U with the HD Zelda Titles, Starfox Zero, and Color Splash the only games to be ported left.
>>736899348probably just eric doing eric things
>>736899479It was fun for me as a newfag to Nintendo.
>>736891449sony should be ashamed this gen
>>736899498Fair Ig, but you gotta understand why it would suck for someone who already played all of the Wii games and VC titles. It's like you saying the Switch is shit when for a newcomer a Switch 2 would be absolute kino just for the NSO collection alone.
>>736888869No, he's right. Mario Kart isn't a system seller. Systems are Mario Kart sellers. Very few people are die hard Mario Kart players that say "I am going to go out and buy a system to get Mario Kart." That said, anyone with a Nintendo system already will almost always just but "the Mario Kart" for it, because why not? You already own the system, and Mario Kart is good solid fun, and good to have when friends are over. By getting MK8 Deluxe early, it ended up selling like 60M total copies. While it's hard to say if the Switch 2 will hit the Switch's numbers, it's not outrageous to think World will also see a 40% attach rate over the course of the Switch 2's lifespan.
wii u was like tears in rain. some incredibly soulful stuff--miiverse, the first few splatfests, mario maker launch, mk8. and since there were so few games it seemed like almost everyone was playing the big releases when they came, hearkening back to the monoculture america had before social media and normies using the internet
