Yoko Taro really likes shmups so that's where hacking comes from, I really enjoy the low bit versions of a lot of themes that come from it. The game does a good job of making them feel like androids with the customizable chips, also the gameplay certainly has a lot more meat to it than Replicant. I'd still recommend playing Replicant, especially if you enjoyed Yoko Taro's style of storytelling. If you liked the parts in Automata where the camera perspective shifts to vary up the gameplay, Replicant does that much more and I find it novel.
